  3. One thing I missed earlier... in the Monkey Monday with Murray at the Monkey head, Murray complains that people kept "dropping him in cauldrons of glop for some reason". Indicating people were using him as the Human Skull (pressed) ingredient for Monkey Island's directions. Which indicates that Guybrush himself will NOT be using Murray as an ingredient in voodoo soup to reach Monkey Island.

  7. For me, I was looking for something to put on the meat to poison it, thanks to the Pirate Leaders. Things I recommend: - Add the flower to the meat by putting them both in the pot, for a thematic line from Guybrush. - Try begging for 2 pieces of eight from random pirates, after you learn Otis needs a mint but before getting money. - Give the troll wrong things three times, then ask about it. -Try to fill the Ming vase with grog. -Try to buy a file. - Haggle for a better deal than 5000 pieces of eight and no extras. - On Monkey Island's vista, use the telescope while the art is pointed to the corner, to let the Lookout of Mêlée catch a glimpse of you. -At the end, save your game before talking to LeChuck at the wedding. ALL of these dialogue paths are gold. I'm a fan of the variant where Guybrush says he has a wife and kids (Elaine shouting "I heard that!"), and later Elaine commenting about something her husband would say. Wholesome back-and-forth?

  8. I think there's a reason they're being coy with how much and how actively this game connects to Curse/Escape/Tales, as well as where exactly it falls on the timeline in relation. My gut feeling is that being any more specific now would pre-empt something that's central to this game. What that is I have no idea, but the lack of any kind of 100% straight answer feels very purposeful.

All the novels aside, this was probably my absolute favorite SW book ever: This was years before the prequels, so it didn't give shit about canon (plus it just re-purposed McQuarrie's unused concept art for its own stories), but to 12-year-old me THIS was the much-needed glance into the corners of the SW universe not seen in the films. And it wasn't about action or great adventures, it was written in the form of travel diaries by "explorers", describing the lives of regular people in the SW universe, something I'm an absolute sucker for. Also, it had that amazing 70s sci-fi style that McQ's art just oozed with. (Plus, my copy got signed by David Prowse - not that it has anything to do with Vader).

  14. I get this point, but I read that book as a kid and it was more like a weird creative writing challenge than at attempt at building out a cohesive lore. The stories were written by a bunch of different authors, and they each took their stories in wildly different directions in terms of tone and genre, and it didn't tie into anything else. It's not a classic by any means, but I can recall more details from the stories than I do from many of the main EU novels. I found it disconcertingly avant garde, and it didn't seem like anyone was monitoring the brand very closely. The wobbly continuity of Star Wars in the 90s had a charm to it that I don't associate with the brand any more. I had a book called 'The Essential Guide to Characters', which re-read a lot because it had a bunch of characters that came from outside the EU I was familiar with. There was stuff like the Ewoks cartoon series, the Marvel comic books, and a middle-grade chapter book series where the Emperor had a long-lost kid called ... Triclops. Just piles of stuff from a whole range of licencees who obviously never talked to each other. This book purported to reconcile all of it, but really just drew attention to the depth of imagination required in order to piece together how ramshackle and incongruent it all was. Here's the cover: Like, I love that Vader and Leia are just kind of buried in the background behind random aliens, and that C-3PO is from a comic book adaptation of the Droids cartoon series. Who's that lady in the front? I couldn't tell you, and I spent many afternoons sprawled on the floor reading this book. This was a thick black and white paperback with lots of drawings of the characters, and I think it had some things in common with a role-playing source book. To me, it made it feel like Star Wars was a weird world where anyone could add a character or a time period and mess around however they wanted to.

  16. EXCEPT in the opening scene of Escape where elaine calls Guybrush “Snugglecakes”!!! Why is she calling him the nickname of one of the pirate barbers of Puerto Pollo? An innocent slip of the tongue, or something far more damning??

I have tried my hand at making a few for myself though they are not great since I rely on whatever I find over the internet which is not that good, so far I made the three Alone in the Dark and Kyrandia 3 but they are far from perfect (though they look great on print ;P). I also recently made a small amount of posters from some of the old SSI and D&D games I found the art of at a really nice quality so I made them for the Eye of the Beholder 1-3 games, Al-Qadim, Pool of Radiance and 2 for Ravenloft and I really like how they came out. I mostly wanted to display the original art and not the cropped versions used on some of the covers since I loved the art but those covers were kind of ugly, but I made a frame to simulate the feel of the original box a bit with the titles (some with a different font) and I added the much needed artist credits.   18. While I've been planning to give Peter Chan's Star Wars DOTT artwork a make-over at some point, LRG's announcement of DOTT Remastered somehow put this on the fast lane. I wasn't really convinced by the poster they decided to include, so I got down to business, planning to offer them a new print-ready version of the art as an option. How could they say no to that? Well, while LRG seemed to be interested, Disney ultimately wasn't. So, here's the result of this effort, adding a much-needed improvement over my old version, both in terms of colors and detail. No more artficial brush strokes and oversharpened edges to suggest detail. I even separated the color channels of the scan to fix the severe alignment issues the Adventurer print suffered from, removing the color fringes and blurry edges caused by that. A few comparisons (at 70% size, enough to show the differences):

  21. It's a beautiful day on Melee Island! The sun is shining and the temperature is a perfect 27 degrees Celsius. There is a gentle breeze blowing from the south-east, bringing with it the fresh smell of the ocean. The humidity is low, making it feel even nicer out. The forecast for tomorrow looks just as good. The only difference is that the wind will be coming from the north-west, so make sure to put your pirate hats on before heading outside. These are perfect conditions for pirates and monkeys alike. Pirates can enjoy a relaxed day on deck, basking in the sun and taking in the scenery while monkeys can swing from tree to tree without having to worry about getting too hot or sweaty.

I'm finally replaying MI1 in prep for next Monday (I mean I feel like I know the first three games off by heart)... and I'm sort of trying to break the game a little by NOT doing what it wants me to. Like I'm NOT talking to the Important Looking Pirates, etc. A nice little detail: You get slightly different dialogue if you talk to Otis before you talk to Shinetop (and you don't get the "pssst" scene, oddly). I love that stuff. Anyway, playing it again just reminded me of the sleeping poodles puzzle: Was this the "monkey wrench" of MI1? Apparently the flowers are called "Caniche Endormi" but you only get that hint* from Otis if you select one particular dialogue choice at one particular point. If you miss it, it's gone forever. * - Yes, apparently the flower's name is French for "sleeping poodle". So how was anyone supposed to know that the flowers has a drowsy effect on dogs? Or poodles in particular? There's no clues anywhere in the game to that effect... is there? Certain flowers have a poisonous effect on dogs, but is it widely known that they will get drowsy? Or is the idea that he was poisoning them, hence the "They're only sleeping!" message that pops up? Maybe I just missed the dogs + flowers piece of general knowledge?

Haha thank you, I'm glad people liked those I think I did see something from Ultima Underworld, I remember seeing the original sketches, I kind of skipped it since I never played any of the Ultima games 😛 (not that I didn't want to play them haha). I'm making other covers for Prisoner of Ice, Shadow of the Comet, Waxworks and Amazons (these last two have been somewhat of a pain but hope it will be worth it :P). I also uploaded another for Veil of Darkness (the Japanese cover that was far better looking).

  25. Right! That's what I meant. After they decided to tighten canon, the stuff they wrote afterward was C-Canon. Part of the continuity. The stuff from before was S-Canon. Secondary. Maybe it fit in, but no promises? Of course, the whole thing kind of buckled under when George created the Clone Wars cartoon and decided to contradict the nature of the CIS from Episodes II and III, meaning that a T-Canon show was superceding G-Canon films because George said so... but those were the end years when he was touching more things. https://screenrant.com/clone-wars-trade-federation-retcon-lucas-idea/

  26. Looks like IGN's coverage has some exclusive footage. For anyone interested, I don't think the look at the scrapbook here is particularly spoilery. It doesn't reveal anything about how MI2 ends, for example, but it does show how the scrapbook will work in practice. I really like the nods to MI2's copy protection in the background of that MI2 page.

LucasArts was a sandbox created for other people to play in (“just don’t lose money”), and ILM increasingly became the toybox a set of other directors could play with when making effects-filled blockbusters. George as benevolent king of a quality-first entertainment empire was the impression I had when I was the most engaged with it all, in the mid 90s before the special editions started to unravel things, then the phantom menace hit.

Tales from the Cantina Band (I had another one with the Battle of the Grassy Plains for the Battle of New Orleans, but I forgot most of it.)

  42. I can't believe I'll be living in a world with a Ron Gilbert approved continuation of MI2.... NEXT MONDAY! 🤯 I'm going in with measured expectations (and I've stopped reading or watching anything related to the game) but! my world will literally be different after its release: A mystery I've sat with since I was 12 will finally have (if not an outright conclusion) then certainly more pieces to the puzzle to spend the next 20 years mulling over and debating on forums.

  46. Nice; I'm still watching it gradually. But the picky Grackle all of you love to hate is a TAD disappointed that he highlighted the thievery trial last. We miss out on the sappy romance scene between Guybrush and Elaine - which is sort of the main indication Secret gives us that Elaine's even attracted to Guybrush. The future games' use of pet names (e.g. Plunder bunny) are callbacks to that scene, and... your Honor... I daresay they cement the canonical story variant much in the same way that Escape indicates Guybrush sank his ship, or Return suggests Guybrush spared Bob. In conclusion, the Grackle-recommended order of the Three Trials is treasure huntery, then thievery, then swordfighting, both so as to give Guybrush and Elaine this scene while also foreshadowing the quests in Revenge (treasure hunting Big Whoop), Curse (thieving the Lost Ring of Blood Island from other thieves while furthering relationship with Elaine), and Escape (insult fighting dissected and explored). This also encourages the variant of Guybrush buying a sword (at the same time he buys the shovel), then surrendering it to Fester during the thievery trial because he hasn't learned to fight with it yet, and then getting a free identical replacement underwater, which he uses to actually learn swordfighting and complete said trial... which all plays into the MI1 themes of red herrings, substitutions, and positive nihilism.
