  2. The "Questions from our viewers" section is questions from people on our Discord server. I inform people days (and sometimes weeks) in advance about my upcoming interviews and they send in their questions. So join our Discord and you'll see a lot of this information on the "Tech Talk with Daniel Albu" channel there. https://discord.conversationswithcurtis.com/ Looking forward to your questions! I started uploading all of my previous conversation on Spotify / Apple Podcasts / Amazon Music. On Spotify, you'll also be able to watch the video if you want. Since I have quite a backlog, older conversations will be uploaded little by little, but from the Clint Bajakian conversation on, all conversations will be available around 3 weeks after their YouTube premiere: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/danielalbu

  3. New DREAMM beta available: aarongiles.com/dreamm/beta/ SWSE and SWChess Windows are unlocked but there are lots of problems, so don't bother reporting any bugs to me on these. SWSE also needs manual extraction from the installer. Many improvements Windows support, specifically 16-bit Windows: Can now load multiple 16-bit tasks together in the same address space Hooked up midiOut and 16-bit multimedia timer multimedia support Implemented many new GDI features, including support for non-solid brushes and binary ROPs Added support for owner-draw listboxes and better messages for 16-bit controls INI files are now read/written from actual INI files instead of using registry proxy 16-bit nametable resources now support type renaming as well New partially working "game": Star Wars Screen Entertainment (still crashes in spots but works partially) New non-working game: Star Wars Chess, Windows (loads fine but won't let you play) Indy Desktop/Yoda Stories now provide their own wavemix.ini configuration settings Disabled video options for DIG95 version of The Dig Fixed bug in GDI line drawing logic that sometimes caused a hang Fixed improper fault when fetching 80-bit floating point values from read-only segments Fixed crash when launching the DOS version of The Dig It's on the list of things to look at post-3.0. Hmmm, hoping to find a solution to this soon. Thanks for the report.

  5. It would be absolutely terrible if someone sent me a private link to the DropBox archive. So please someone definitely don't do that.

  7. Both DOTT and Hit the Road were both still made for a Roland thing 🙂 - just not MT-32, but Roland SoundCanvas (55, I believe, but Zaarin knows better). I don't think there has been a MIDI-based SCUMM game ever that was originally composed (or arranged) for SoundBlaster or Adlib. But of course, that doesn't mean people aren't allowed to prefer them. 😁

  8. I do personally prefer the adlib/soundblaster versions. Mainly for nostalgic reasons I suppose, but I really like the smooth and organic sound of it. For anyone interested about 90's PC music history (Adlib, Soundblaster, MT32, MIDI, you name it..), I highly recommend reading "History of PC game MIDI" (attached file). When I composed the soundtrack for Lucy Dreaming (a point and click adventure in pixel art), I did a lot of research about how to make music that could sound "era genuine". This article helped me a lot and it was basically the start of my journey in that kind of music. A few month later I ended up composing a dual soundtrack for the game (Roland MT-32 and Adlib/Soundblaster) 😂 History_of_PC_Game_MIDI.pdf

  9. It's answered in some of the 4 hour conversations Including some of the ones I already recorded and have yet to release (with Sierra composers Neal Grandstaff and Mark Seibert) The short answer is: The composers composed for the Roland and then "downgraded" them for Adlib and downgraded again for the PC speaker. A lot of the times I prefer the Adlib / Soundblaster versions because that's how I remember them from my childhood.

  10. The most expensive collection of games I've come across on eBay wasn't LucasArts, it was a $155,000 collection of Infocom games: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115558782739 I know there have been single games going for more than that, but nothing I've ever had any reason to search for. I don't begrudge them though, because that one probably does belong in a museum. The most ridiculous one, that I don't know if it's still up, was a mere EUR 45. It's the Monkey Island 30 Anniversary Anthology PC Collection Limited Run... Styrofoam Inlay?

  11. The actual contents of the USB is a bit funky! They seem to have used an almost 60GB USB stick, and filled a chunk of it up with including the game three times, twice in zip files and once in a folder! This seems... an odd thing to do. I noticed also that the Windows DVD (although not the USB) has this random extraneous shortcut file sitting in the folder IDK, I guess it seems a bit careless? Especially combined with the kerfuffle around the Loom USB!

  12. I think it was in Daniel's interview with Clint Bajakian, where he mentioned that the Adlib versions were (always?) some kind of manual down-convert from the Roland tracks.

  13. This one, as well as the one with Michael Land, were my absolute favourites so far. I’m such a huge fan of the music in LucasArts games! Both in terms of general composition, interactivity and production quality! These interviews were long, but they were worth every single minute of listening. Getting this behind the scenes look with so much inside info, but also hearing and feeling their compassion about their work, is just pure fun! So thanks again for contributing these moments to the fan community!

  15. I checked it out and I can confirm that I'm also experiencing the whole "debug mode" thing with Grim Fandango in the latest beta version. I found this website, which has some information about the game's debug mode, in case it can be of assistance: https://tcrf.net/Grim_Fandango

  18. Hi, everyone! Have been reading here for quite a while. Just registered to say: "but they did". It's a shame the USB-stick doesn't contain what was promised.

  19. There was a video on the LucasArts Fans Facebook group showing that a section next to the sliding metal cover flips out to reveal a thin USB stick. It looks pretty clever - too clever for its own good if nobody can figure it out! Hopefully you can find the video yourself, but if not let me know and I'll track down the link...

  22. The larger ones contain a readme file along with the game files. That seems to be the only difference. And the folders contain the same game files as the zips. There's no secret director's cuts that I can discern!

  26. While everyone knows the Amiga version of the Secret of Monkey Island has the best music for that particular game, how do people feel about the PC versions or the other pre-digital audio games? (ie. everything before Full Throttle). The reason I ask is that conventional wisdom states that Roland MT-32 is the most coveted versions of those original soundtracks, simply because it required an expensive piece of hardware/one extra download to listen to. And sure technically the sound quality is better... but I was playing around with DREAMM and Day of the Tentacle the other day and I think I preferred the Adlib version of the soundtrack. At least in certain rooms (eg. Jed and Ned's sculpture room). Does anyone actively prefer the Adlib versions of soundtracks over the Roland ones? It's been so ingrained into me that "Roland was the best" that I've taken it for granted that anyone might actually prefer the "lesser" formats. And what about the composers? Which versions are their preferred versions? Did they work harder on the Adlib versions and only see the Roland versions as nice extras, or did they always compose for Roland first? Would be interesting to know (and it's probably answered in a 4 hour conversation with one of the somewhere ) ( @danielalbu)

  31. Thanks, Aaron. I can't solve the problem even deleting REGISTRY.REG. I don't know if it's only an issue of mine or not. I have even uninstalled the last stable version. I have checked the AppData directory (and the subdirectories named 'Local', 'LocalLow' and 'Roaming') and deleted the 'aarongiles' folder. With everything clean, I have installed DREAMM 3.0b4. Then, the program asked me to search the folder with the games and everything went allright, Grim was installed. But the game keeps being in debug mode. I have push Shift + P and Manny jumps to the end of the game, the Act 4, near the fountain that is like an ashtray. I don't know if I have to delete any other file in any other directory or if it's something that only happens in my computer.

  33. Ah yes, those have yet another tag for its version of the music, though the files still contain all (?) of the others. Though they're probably based on the MT-32 ones, because the instruments seem like a subset of it. At least in my copy of MI2 (which comes from the LucasArts Mac CD Game Pack), some of the Mac music is missing towards the end. ScummVM optionally falls back on using the Mac instruments with the MT-32 tracks, and it sounds good enough to me:

  34. I think it was Hit the Road I was thinking of that was made on/for general midi as opposed to a Roland thing. Zaarin, whose name I can never remember on this forum, would know better than me. (@s-island) And my Mac music memories were MI2 and FOA.

  35. Well, it's not a Tech Talk with Daniel Albu, but here's my Techs Play with Noah Falstein! (Techs Play is a series in which I bring back people I interviewed and I play one of their games) So here's Noah Falstein playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for the first time in 30 years!

  36. Which games in particular? ScummVM has supported the Mac instruments from Loom, Monkey Island 1, Monkey Island 2, and Fate of Atlantis for quite some time. A more accurate player for Loom, and a completely new player for Last Crusade appeared in the development version recently, so I'm hoping that means a Monkey Island 1 will follow. But I believe Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max also had custom Mac instruments, and those aren't supported at this time. I'm always hoping someone who has actually heard the real thing could check it out to see how accurate it is. At least in the games that use iMUSE, each piece of music can appear in several forms, each tagged with an identifier to specify what hardware it's intended for. The DOS versions of Monkey Island 2 and Fate of Atlantis have music tagged as ADL (AdLib), ROL (MT-32), and even some SPK (PC speaker). Day of the Tentacle has ADL, ROL, and GMD (General MIDI). In Sam & Max, everything appears to be simply tagged as MIDI. Based on some very quick testing, so feel free to correct me.

  37. I’ll always have a fondness for the scratchy and weird Mac instrument library the early LucasArts games had because that’s what I grew up with, but at this point my favorite is the MT-32 version. It’s the only version of Monkey Island 2 you can actually turn up the volume for and it sounds better and better. (Also, I thought by the DOTT or Hit the Road era they had moved on to composing for SoundBlaster/Adlib cards? My memory was that MT-32 was the baseline in the early days but eventually they moved off it. Maybe not?)
