  1. Ah, they actually took out the Charles Atlas line themselves... pity. Anyway, thanks for your reply! Keep up the good work.
  2. First of all, LogicDeLuxe, amazing work. Really. I can't properly express my gratitude. Likewise Espiox, but you say he isn't responding, so I doubt he'll see this. I've played through the game and it works great. Everything the SE should have been. I have only minor quibbles, but I thought I'd mention them anyway, since you've been kind enough to fix similar things. Most of these are related to the subtitles, and match voice mode vs. original text mode: Neither subtitle mode will give me the Charles Atlas line when looking at the skeleton at the Voodoo Lady's place. There's a typo in the original game, since you seem to be fixing those on occasion. Talking to the Voodoo Lady, she says: "...my mind reading skills tells me it is your future you are interested in." It should be "tell me". In Meathook's gutwrenching tale: "A monster that, just by coincidence, is identical to one that attacked ME when I was just a child..." Should be "to one what attacked me" in original text mode. Fighting this guy: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c194/thedarnn/insult.jpg The line should be "is this the best" in match voice mode. In the cutscene after freeing Otis, assuming you do this before Carla or Meathook or the ship, where Lechuck takes off his Shinetop disguise, the music stops playing during LeChuck's transformation. Once you say a ship is out of your price range at Stan's, one of his responses: "Okay, but I got five other guys coming to look at this baby today." Should be "five other guys coming back to look at this baby today" in match voice mode. While trying to procure credit at the store, the storekeeper's line "You're one of the Fettucini brothers?" should be "You're one of them Fettucini brothers?" in match voice mode. In part 2, looking out the window in the first room once you descend into the hatch, Guybrush's line "I think I'm going to get seasick." should be "I think I'm gonna be seasick." in match voice mode. Herman's line near the corpse "Am I some kind of a castaway?" should be "Am I some kind of castaway?" in match voice mode. Same conversation (and others with Herman), Guybrush's "Excuse me, I've got pressing business to attend to." should be "I've got some pressing business" in match voice mode. When Guybrush is talking to the cannibals and they ask him if he needs anything in return for the idol, you can reply with "No thanks, generosity is it's own reward." That should read "its own reward". Presumably it's like this in the original, but as long as you're making changes... The grey cannibal's line "Oh, and I suppose stealing bananas is any better?" should be "And I suppose" etc. in match voice mode. Not sure if it's the modified version of the game or just the way ScummVM handles the CD version, but if you save while talking to the navigator, finish talking to him and then load the game, the dialogue options don't apear until you mouse over them. Likewise the final conversation with Elaine, where the dialogue options are also placed over the image. If Guybrush tries to use the voodoo root on something on the ghost ship (I tried a chicken), he will say "I don't think it's very useful in it's present form." Again, the second "it's" should be "its". Guybrush, talking to a ghost in Melee town, can say "No, but I do have this deadly magic root beer." This should be "No, but I have this deadly magic root beer." in match voice mode. Like I said, all this stuff is really minor, and did not hamper my enjoyment in any way.
  3. In case anyone's still wondering, the frame rate (if I remember correctly) is 15. The sound is indeed longer than the video, so just insert blank frames as necessary to get what plays beyond the end of the video. There are probably easier ways, but I just get VirtualDub to read the image sequence, adding appropriately-numbered blank PNGs at the end of it. If you really want the one hundred percent authentic experience you can capture the second or two from the game with FRAPS, but it would just be abrupt when it cuts off.
  4. First of all, John_Doe, thanks so much! Really, I am at a loss for words. Elbiolin, judging by what happens with stump3c.snm, the WAV file is longer than the actual video. If I recall correctly from the game, the video ends, and the sound plays a bit longer when you get back to the normal view. I'm not sure about the framerate of the video, though.
  5. Thank you for replying, but it seems the videos on the site suffer from the same issues I encontered trying to encode my own. Again, John Doe, or any of you guys who can program, could you possibly make something that extracts the individual frames of the video?
  6. PIII, Celeron 1.7, 512MB RAM. If you could get it to save all the frames as image files, and give the framerate of the video it's playing, the individual frames could be composed into a new video in VirtualDub.
  7. Well, naturally, not a day goes by and I find something to complain about... Xvid seems to die when I try to use it, the video doesn't start playing. Any other codec I try (Alpary lossless, Huffyuv, uncompressed AVI) seems to not only drop frames (I get 130 out of 151 at best), but also to create frames like this, amalgamated from two separate frames: And not only at scene changes. I tried turning off hardware acceleration and changing the color quality of the display, since Hypercam seems to say those things can help, but no go.
  8. This is too awesome for words. Thanks to anyone who replied and/or made something.
  9. Well. I've made some progress. Messing around with the DirectSound acceleration, the DirectDraw acceleration and software mode, I got cutscenes in Residual to work sometimes (although I'm not sure what the settings are now, since now they seem to have stopped working). On the other hand, in ScummRev5, when I stand on an SNM file inside a movie LAB, it lets me 'save decompressed zlib file'. This file can be played in the X-Wing Alliance cutscene player, from here. Unfortunately the program only supports the extraction of individual frames, and has no frame by frame playback. Trying to capture the video directly from the screen still gives poor results. Any thoughts? Would there be any point in decompressing all the files and putting them back into a LAB file, so that either Grim itself or Residual takes up less resources playing them, thus making the capture less jerky? Is there perhaps some way to expand on that player?
  10. So. Is there anything that can play (or, better yet, convert) Grim cutscenes? They show a white screen for me in Residual, both with software rendering and without, and Benny's Smush player won't play them (but then it's not supposed to). I assume the Smush player from the game formats site won't play them either, but it doesn't work on my computer because it's a DOS application and my windows doesn't want to run them anymore. The sticky says this about ScummRev5: 5 can do many of the things that 3 can but it can also open *some* .lfl files, have multiple files open at the same time, and best of all view and save SMUSH movie's (eg Grim Fandango and CMI cutscenes). But, while it opens the movie LABs, the video viewer option is greyed out. Less fortunate alternatives: Is there any way to record them? I tried with Fraps, but it seems my computer isn't fast enough, I get skipping. And I don't know the framerate, either. I also tried playing windowed and recording with something that's not for games but for windows video screen capture, with poor results. Any way to compile the player from Residual as a standalone thing, so that I could possibly get it working, maybe on another computer? Lastly, and least likely as I have no programming knowledge (but two programmers for parents, for what that's worth), anything I could do on my own to make this happen?
  11. I am not so much 'back' as 'saw a title that looked interesting on "recent activity on the boards" and clicked on it'.
  12. Chrisakachris is the relatively ancient nickname of Itamar, a bloodthirsty soldier in the occupation army. During his free time, that is, when he's not turning lists of cynical remarks into articles for the site, Itamar listens to K's Choice, reads Chuck Palahniuk, smells like Teen Spirit and feels great. Among his greatest achievenemts are building the Aswan dam, the invention of the steam engine, the erection of the hanging towers of Babylon, mortar work on the great Chinese wall, and nearly all the dialogue in the computer game Grim Fandango. His outlook is drawn from the opinions and works of such philosophers and authors as Plato, Abrahams, Shnitzklein (?), Pratchett, Scott Card, Threepwood, Whedon, and most of all Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbs). He tries not to write anything too predictable, unless he things of a joke that makes him laugh. In that case, anything goes. Occasionally he writes biographies in the third person. People who have constructive criticism, as well as anyone who's managed to finish Street Fighter 2 with Dhalsim, can get a hold of him here: (email) Write something funny if you want to stick out among the masses of spam. I haven't seen the last two seasons of Buffy yet, and that Chris Beck article has more spoilers in it than I'd like, so I'll skip that.
  13. I apologize for bumping the thread, but I don't have much time to play around with things like this these days (cursed army), so I'm going to ask instead of trying to find out myself: Does that tool support any languages in which the writing is right to left, like Hebrew?
