edit2: And that damn kant book is taking forever to read. Some of the things I really can't even follow, such as Kant's simply deciding that the idea of absolute necessity and generality is indicative of synthetic a priori truths... I really don't see how that works out. Supposedly he got that idea from Hume, I'll have to check it out-- fortunately I have his "An Inquiry concerning human understanding" already on my shelf. Also, I have some trepidation on this fixation with metaphysics being a science. I'm not sure if that's just the way they usually spoke back then, but from what I understand, metaphysics is anything but science. W, for example, thinks that metaphysics is unconcerned with scientific facts and methodology (as the nature of metaphysical inquiry is "grammatical", (i.e., what metaphysics is is not found in what is said about metaphysical things, but how they're said), and so "metaphysics as a science" would be quite a strange thing indeed. It would be like saying that there is a "scientific" inquiry as to whether bachelors are married or not.

Anyways, it's not very fun to read. I guess I'll slog through it though, because I DO so want to hate on those damned Kantians! ^_^

oh also i finished the Tao te ching. Aside from its very eastern "don't let the commoners know anything" idea (also saw this in the Art of War), I liked it quite a lot. I think the difference that you were speaking of between W's quote and the one from the Tao was a difference in methodology, not really so much ideas: W illustrates what he wants to say negatively; that is, he either shows that knowledge of it is impossible or unsayable, but the Tao gives propositions like "the tao is..." (or "positive" statements), which is contradictory to what W is interested in doing. Like that one quote: W says it's senseless to say that something is an axis if nothing turns or can turn on it; the Tao speaks of the axis regardless, in an effort to illustrate a way to live. I don't e.g. think that W would accept those statements in the Tao te ching as "descriptions" of the Tao. It's more likely he would reject them as descriptions of any "real" metaphysical reality--whatever that is--- but respect the sort of life people who use those illustrations live (and their Tao-sayings as part of that life).

Though his introduction is rather Catholic-hatin', it's interesting to see someone actually rewrite the entire gospels like Tolstoy did. They don't contain any mention of miracles either, since Tolstoy thought that they proved Jesus' divinity only to those who already believed he was god-- essentially fluff compared to Jesus' teachings (interesting to note how those same miracles were treated in recent threads in the Senate-- being unverifiable and having no proof, they were of no impact on atheists there, just as Tolstoy predicted). Tolstoy was apparently more interested in Christianity as a lesson on how to live rather than how things are. I've read a small bit of it. If you have the time, I'd like to hear what you think of this sort of thing.
