p.s. I pity the fools who havent played kotor

KotOR is the second RPG I've played and, I think, by far the best game I have ever played, because I can really get into it. The first was Morrowind over at my cousin's house, but I only got to play it a short time (It seemed very fun though). The JK series is fun in its way (FPS), but if I had to choose between:

a) KotOR or

b) JK series

I would choose:

c) KotOR w/ all of tk102's tools, KT, the latest mdlops, gmax, nwmax and tutorials galore :D

Yeah, I like KotOR better, but I have to say JA was a sweet game.

I liked JA a lot too, but it didn't seem to be part of the DF series, and so I didn't like it as much as them. Something seemed missing. Probably (i.e. definitely) because it didn't featured Kyle Katarn as the PC. Dark Forces, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith and, Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast all featured Kyle as the PC (not so much in MotS, but he was there (and it had the same feel as JK, because of the same engine)). That's my twenty-five cents (two cents adjusted for inflation :D).

that was kinda why its called rpg nearly every rpg u come across is turn based fighting and leveling up and walking about a hell of a lot thats what makes them big games even the old snes rpgs were the longest games back then as well im not saying its the best way to fight but it beats jedi outcast i hated that with vengance nice plot but the 1st person gun fighting...

Agrees with everything said except for liking JA. Probably because of the crap ass story. Or maybe, the game just felt extremely rushed to make the $$'s off of the MP community. Or, IMO, it should have been sold as an expansion pack like MotS, because thats basically all it was. Most likely a combination of the 3 & a few other things.

*wishes his copy wasnt all scratched up so he could trade it in on something better*

Hopefully with/if it happens/ JK3 (I dont consider JA part 3), Kyles back, they write a story that atleast matches the greatness of DF2 or something that feels like the writers actually put some thought into it, & the MP community pulls their head out of their ass & plays the game, & not whine about everything. My $5.00 <had a good night at the casino;) >.

I hated JK:JA, worst game I ever purchased, I have a working Atari Pong console so, coming from me, that is really saying something, the lame-ass storyline, and the jumping...

The jumping.... The jumping.... The jumping....

*Looks up at cieling at my custom made hanging CD mobile that contains all of the worst piece-of-crap games I have ever bought!*

Well at least the JK:JA CD refracts light well! :D

I'm playing ja at the mo and even though i am thoroughly enjoying it it doesnt really compare

ok yes u can argue that the 2 games play differently and its a bit like saying chalk isnt cheese but it is a star wars game so ppl will compare any way

if u were to ask me which is better i would choose kotor and here r some reasons y

1) graphics definately better

2) the lightsabre, if at any time u get bored of the colour or want to change to a single blade dual blade or double blade you can change it at any point in the game once u have aquired what you need to do so

3) storyline, both of them have one, but because kotor has the side missions (yes you have to talk endlessly to get them-and this can be annoying at times) it gives the game more depth

4) the npc's, in ja u do get them helping u now and then but in kotor not only r they there throughout the game you choose who's there to help you and i cant speak for everyone but i couldnt help but feel just a little responsablefor them, so when one of them goes down in a fight the first thingi do after battle is make sure they get the medical attention they need, in ja you look out for no.1 i find i dont actually care much about the other npc's just as long as they let me enjoy killing the bad guy's

now im sure plenty of ppl could think up more reasons and i am just as sure that jedi knight fans could argue that ja is better but to be honest its a persanal preference

@DARK JEDI #672

Danger. Danger. Run on sentance. Danger. Danger. j/k :D

@FiEND_138

I liked it through once (as Boba Fett (of course... see avatar)), seeing both endings, and that was enough for me. I didn't pay $50 for it new (it was $50 new, right?) I got it, and KotOR for $30 each, so that was good (great in the case of KotOR).

I agree. I also, don't think JK:JA was part of the DF series (I thought I was clear on that *shrugs*). It is only Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, not Star Wars: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy.

If the story was the same, but you were playing as Kyle, and could push students to the Light or Dark Side, through ineptitude or good- or evilness, then it might have made for a great story and earned the latter title mentioned. Because it didn't feature Kyle as the main character, it doesn't/shouldn't/didn't get "Dark Forces II" or "III."

I see your $5 and raise you another $5 :D.

@RedHawke

:lol::lol:

@Aleggy

1) Agree

2) Agree. You can also add your own color without changing the default colors, so you can have a custom saber that no one else has. In JK:JA, you can only switch the default colors' textures, so the possibility exists, that an NPC will show up in the game with your lightsaber, thus making it not fully custom.

3) Agree. You can also skip through the dialog (most of the time), and get to the choices quicker (if you're really impatient).

4) Agree. Plus in JK:JA, the NPCs aren't part of your group, so you can accidentally kill them, or at least harm them enough to cause that NPC, and any other NPCs, who are close enough, to try to kill you, because you killed/harmed a friendly. Annoying to say the least.

One thing I would add, is that it has Bastila, and you can bed her :D. (I have to stick Bastila in, it is required of me. (I must maintain, that I like her more than anyone, and am crazier (in a good way? :eyeraise: ) than anyone. At the very least have more issues than anyone ;))j/k))

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, for one thing, JKJA has absoloutely no replay values, and both endings sucked. Kotor>JKJA here.

Modding is tougher in KotOR (heh im actually a decent JK2 modder and im lost with kotor :confused:) but the results are much, much better. Kotor>JKJA

In all of the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games, combat was EXCEEDINGLY CHEESY (or should i say chalky :confused:). It was basically...absorb, lightning, jump, slash, repeat. The blocking was terrible and the slices were toO. At least in kotor, a saber can actually block another saber... Kotor>JK2.

Kotor is my first RPG, and i've played more FPS's than I can count. Kotor, while not comparabile combat-wise, has a much better storyline than say, Call of Duty or SOF (SOF especially...that was a game for my crappy CD mobile!!) ever could. Kotor is greater than or equal to FPS values.

Basically...

Kotor Weenz :D

Well, I would expect this forum to have poster's biased towards KOTOR, so I'm not surprised that overall most folks favor it for one reason or another.

I don't understand peoples complaints about JO/JA (both of which I own) force jumping or sabre fighting. The jumping rocks once you get the hang of it. You can do back flips off walls to take your opponent from behind, jump 30 ft across a bottomless pit (did I mention you can fall? - no 6 inch barrier stopping you here). Sabre fighting is the same. You CAN block hits if you're fast enough, and control the angle and power of your strikes. True, this does take more hand/eye coordination and practice than autopause, change attack, oh and shoot up some drugs... I found that type of fighting just annoying. Scrolling through attacks, force moves, stims, force powers etc every 15 seconds just to have a fight? I ended up selling most of my stuff just so I'd have less scrolling when outfitting my character or pausing in a fight.

And all that backtracking with no "walk and keep walking till I tell you to stop" key (least not that I know of). If I've got to walk across 3 maps (and wait for the loads) why can't I just click my destination and say "get there"? And finally, when I save the galaxy, why can't I keep playing? I ignored most of the side missions because they were lower priority than saving the galaxy yes/no? You should be able to go back and help Mission's brother or be a lawyer after the Galaxy is safe. And the endless grabbing a box or corpse, open box, grab items. That really sucked. You should just have to walk through their location like a normal power up, with perhaps the option (not requirement) to look at what you grabbed. All they need to do is show the content window down the right side or something - and use the whole right side not 10 pages of scrolling. I had like 40 pages of inventory towards the end so looking for undifferentiated data pads to read their contents in a tiny scroll box...ugh.

This is my first experience with an RPG, and I've been a gamer for many years. I just think that RPG game programmers could learn a lot from FPS game programmers in the area of how to accomplish things in the game without unnecessary, repetitive work... I guess RPG is no my style. I don't enjoy comparing 20 blasters each with 4 or 5 aspects affecting performance, and reams of text to read, then have to be a bystander while they are used...

I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, and it wouldn't have if I didn't enjoy the game as much as I did. I just found these frustrating aspects very frustrating over time so for me, JO/JA are definetly better games. I'm gonna go sell KOTOR on E-bay after going through once whereas JOand JA are keepers.

Hmm... First post on the forum and all ready trying to pick a fight. J/K :D

You do realise the JK games have their own forums in the Lucasforums network here.

It is obvious from your lengthly and very well thought out post that games like KOTOR or any RPG's of any kind are definately not your cup of tea, as most play similarly.

As this is most definately a KOTOR section your well thought out post will most likely end up in strong negative responses or flames.

Comparing RPG Games with FPS games is a like comparing apples to oranges, they are not the same... nor should they ever be.

One game genre is an entertaining test in hand/eye coordination (FPS), the other game genre (RPG) is an entertaining interactive story. Some can play and enjoy both types of games and others can't. :D

Yeah, clearly RPG is not my style. It wasn't my intention to knock the game at all. I did play it all the way through and did enjoy it for the most part, though that isn't obvious from my previous post...

I just think that with a few improvements to gameplay that a game like this could appeal more to FPS players, while still having all the elements RPG players enjoy.

Do you folks really enjoy having to grab all that stuff? Is it fun to scroll through all those weapons and read about all the different attributes when arming a character? These are genuine questions, and perhaps if someone explains why that is appealing I can change my outlook on it.

I did enjoy all the choices in conversations, though I kept worrying that one bad answer could be costly, such as when I was on Manaan before the court...

We could explain it until we're blue in the face but nothing is going to change your opinion until you want to change it yourself. Not trying to be argumentative...just pointing out a fact :)

Some people prefer a lot of action...some people prefer a lot of story. I throughly enjoyed KotOR, have replayed it dozens of times, and honestly feel that it's one of the best games ever made.

My co-worker, who much prefers GTA: Vice City, played KotOR once and said she would never play it again. Different strokes for different folks.

You've acknowledged that RPG is not the thing for you. As such, you're not going to appreciate the game the same way that someone who does like RPG will.

BTW, on Manaan, some of your choices will get you killed or banned...regardless of whether or not you've retrieved the Star Map :(

I do want to change it. That's why I asked, hoping for a different perspective on it.

I did enjoy the dialog choices quite a bit and I want to enjoy this more.

yeah, fried first time then banned, which I figured was the best possible outcome for that level. I later received a message asking me to return so I figured that ment I could sneak in somehow, but never got to find out cause

the game ended as soon as the primary mission was complete, which to me is counterintuitive. After all, you've saved the galaxy, you should therefore be able to go explore it...

I just started playing JA again to day I think it's addicting I personlly love the jumping and the force powers. The stroyline is pretty cool, I wouldn't knock it to hard, but also, KotOR is the game of the year, so you can't compare the two, one is on a differnt level as the other in more ways than one.

Trust me, I'm a huge FPS player and I still enjoy RPGs.

It all comes down to personnal taste. KOTOR can be time consuming for the impatient. It takes time to play it thoroughly and perhaps the average FPS players wouldn't like to it.

KOTOR is how RPGs are supposed to be, if you want faster action, you can try Diablo 2 which calls itself RPG...yeah right

:rolleyes:

True and untrue. You can compare certain aspects of an FPS and an RPG. Story is one of them, Music, Graphics, etc.

However, making a direct comparison would not be right.

RPG's don't really work that way, consider it more like a playable Book or Movie... they don't let you stick around after the end either. :D

ok rpg fans how many of u when reading the choose ur own story books actually rolled the dice in the books that told u to

I didnt but i still enjoyed them but instead of rolling the dice i kinda cheated by just turning to the page that said i had won the fight or highest luck

but since i knew the majority of my friends did the same i never really saw it as cheating

however the board game dungeons and dragons i have yet to play a game but all the copycat games i have played i have yet to enjoy enough to buy one

all the rpg computer games i have tried i have not enjoyed in the least

that is until i played kotor

now in a fps the thing that keeps me going until i complete the game is just how much fun i have killin the enemy and preferably for it to come up with as many ways as possible to bludgeon explode or trample the enemy into dust

now in kotor i got to do all this but it was the story rather than the sadistic action that enthralled me

so roll on kotor 2 i cant wait to play ya

Diablo II can go to you know where....it gets boring after you beat it 50+ times...which most people do considering you can have multiple characters and accounts....which blizzard (makers) doesnt really care...as long as you dont hax...but thats my opinion sooo.... :o most FPS r crappy but Ive found some i like.... UT2k3(Plan on getting 2k4)..sry to say JKA(Found my passion with the dual sabers :eek: :eek: )....and CS (Bang bang defuse! No Explode! :D :D ) it all comes down to tastes....and ur connection... and your pc . . . :D :D :D
