Here are mine.

1. Compañeros

2. Gambling Glottis

3. Scrimshaw

4. Manny & Meche

5. Blue Hector

Compañeros is by far my favourite tune in GF. When I think of the game's music, I think of this song. Gambling Glottis is also good and every time I hear it I feel like I'm in High Roller's Lounge listening to Manny and Nick's conversation. Scrimshaw makes it to the list because it brings Toto to my mind, and he was one of the best minor characters in the game. As for the two others, they're just so good. :) Manny & Meche was the song that brought me to tears and Blue Hector is a joy to listen to.

Could I at least divide the five best ones in two categories?

If so,

Jazz & the Like:

-Swanky Maximino

-Blue Hector

-Hi-Tone Fandango

-Neon Ledge (I don't know if you consider this Jazz, but I can't put it in Others)

-Mr. Frustration Man

Others:

-Temple Gate

-Lost Soul's Alliance

-Talking Limbo

-Ninth Heaven

-Manny & Meche (If I had to pick one song of this soundtrack, which I could not live without, it would probably be this one. This Tango-like theme is beautiful by itself, but if you add the fact that it was played at the end of the game, you get yourself a pretty emotional song)

Kloppstock, welcome to the forums.

I know realise how great this game's soundtrack is, it is mpossible to pick a favourite one.

important tracks included that was not availabe with the off soundtrack.

themes like"Glottis Garage",Track Betting Area",Packing Rom",Office Roof", wery good

tracks that were left out.

You can get this with P2P app DC++ (if you are lucky to find it like i was)

Im sure Peter Mcconell don't have anything against it.

Oh, I can't make a top 5... they're all too good for that, but I can say which are my favourite, with no order ;)

Talking Limbo (love it!)

Compañeros

Domino's Theme

Casino Calavera

Ninth Heaven

Of course, maybe in ten minutes I would select others, because I love them all

All right, I'll sign here too.

...

No, I've changed my mind. I can't pick any five favourite tracks, I like them all too much. I could list approximately two thirds of the OST as my favourites and the other third as 'I like those very much, as well' types :).

I also would like to mention that the "Tample Gate" track has always remided me of the music from film Stalker, and "Manny&Meche" has something in common with music from the great Can't Change the Meeting Place miniseries.

I know what you mean. There's 185 of them. I got them off the game disk, but I don't remember how. But there's every bit of music in the game.

Nice idea for a thread, but difficult! I'm liking peoples' reasons for their choices, so I'll follow suite. My favourites (in no particular order) would have to be:

Manny's Office - Thank you, CrimsonClown, for being the first to list this. Probably only up here because it reminds me of those very first moments of the game... such a thoughtful, well-paced track for the start of an adventure.

Hector Steps Out - Despite the obvious title, and having played through the game very recently, I can't quite remember which part this is from, but the tune is awesome! Could someone help me out?

Hi-tone Fandango - This is just extremely cool. I whistled along with that muted brass on countless ocassions. Really diggin' it lounge musak.

Casino Calavera - Same with this one; that clarinet (right?) is just so catchy, and it reminds me of all the fun in Rubacava.

Compañeros - This one pretty much speaks for itself (like Naomi said, it just screams GF), but again, it's probably those early memories of El Marrow flooding back in.

I think Domino also deserves a special mention, if not for the opening sax at least. Just that first time you deal with him, it fits his sleazy charm so well =)

Oh yeah, and does anyone have any ideas on how to get those unofficial tracks off the game discs? (Sorry for the long-winded reply ^_^;)

If you use SCUMM Revisited 2, you can delve into Grim Fandango's resource files and extract them, which of course encompassed both the sound and the artwork. The only problem with this is that the music files included with Grim Fandango are actually of notably inferior quality to those on the soundtrack. That is, they are compressed to fit on two CDs amongst everything else, and as such the sound quality does take a hit.

This is wholly unnoticable while playing the game, but if you're casually listening to them via Winamp or something and play the rip and the soundtrack versions side by side, you will notice the ripped versions sound significantly less clear.

Still, having those files is better than not having them, and unless you're using headphones you may not be able to tell the difference. However, be aware that there will be a quality distinction between the rips and the OST. If not having every single cue doesn't bother you and you do care a lot about sound quality, simply listening to the OST probably makes for a better experience. The rips tend to have lots of ten second tracks and such, you see, and they aren't looped.

Thanks a lot Thrik, though I think this may be a solution to the quality problems: http://soundtracks.mixnmojo.com

Thanks to a post in another thread, I just managed to download all of these (from the PC soundtracks), and they seem to be just as clear, if not better quality than the main ones on the OST. You're right, a lot of them are really short, but if anyone was going crazy looking for a tiny bit of music they loved from the game, this is where to go.

I might still give that SCUMM Revisited a look, as having a gander at the artwork sounds like a lot of fun =)

Unfortunately all that the author of that page has done is combine the rips with the OST, resulting in a mixture of variable bitrate mp3s which sound great and restricted ones that are fixed at a fairly poor 128kbps, and in addition are based upon the compressed rips.

Still, if you're happy with how they sound then that's awesome. You're luckier than me, with my high-definition headphones that shine a bit spotlight upon any and all quality flaws. :(

It's hard to pick a favorite from such an overall brilliant soundtrack. I like the sound of "High Roller" and "Swanky Maximino", and "Compañeros" is way up there for the same reasons Klia put down. But I'd have to go with "Los Angelitos". It's very pretty, and evocative. I find myself listening to it often.

First Its Los Angelitos.. with the crying 2 baby birds.

Second Its Bone Wagon for Bones. Its the dance of the deads with thier bones.

All of their music are bones.

Third Its Ninth Heaven, Its like the 4 latin and they are on one very far mountine in Peru.

Forth its Temple Gate. A mystriouse Gate very far in the mountines where nobody reached it for hunderd of years.

Fifth Its Companeros, A mexican carnaval where the ballons are sold.

I also put Scrimshaw & Rubacava and Lost souls among them.

Very beautiful emoitional music which all have messages, Every music of them has a message and has something hidden in it.
