Maps: how are they?

haven't played Battlefront 1 in a while, but i will check it out every now and then. how are the new maps in BF 2, and particularly the space ones (this is the big selling point after all)? are the new land maps really different from BF 1 ones? are the space maps tiny? seems like not much else is different from the first one, so this is kinda what makes the decision to drop another 50 bucks or not. just looking for some general comments really, don't have to go into crazy detail, unless you want to.

SWBF2 has only one map per planet (except for Tatooine which has two... Jabba's Palace and Mos Eisley) on the ground, and the space maps are all new (but very similar to each other: Tatooine, Yavin, Kashyyyk, Felucia, Hoth, Tatooine).

So you lose one Kashyyk map (docks?), you lose all of Rhen Var, you lose Bespin, you lose the Dune Sea. You lose one of the Naboo maps (I forget which one) and you still have one map from Yavin. But you gain (one map for each): Mustafar, Felucia, Mygeeto, Dagobah, Coruscant, Utapau, Polis Masa, Death Star, and Tantive IV. You still have Geonosis and Hoth.

The maps that are retained from SWBF1 are supposed to be "tweaked" or "expanded" just so you know, so some things have changed.

I'm speaking of multiplayer of course. Some maps are available in Single player only.

You've got new game modes (not available on all maps) including one and two flag CTF (maps stay the same, just flags are placed and capture locations), and "Hunt" mode, which has a weak team of characters controlling "natives" (like Ewoks or Gungans) and the other team of normal soldiers. The map ends if the native team holds out for the time limit, or if the soldier (hunter) team gets a certain number of points. Space maps have two modes: "Assault" where you destroy all the targets on the outside and inside of the enemy ships (and destroy their frigate(s)) and get a certain number of kills; and 1 Flag CTF (in space). The CTF maps in space are the same as the Assault maps except they close off most of the internal parts of the ships so you can't destroy them from the inside and you have a "flag" and capture point placed.

Many small things have changed in this game, so if you thought the SWBF1 gameplay was perfect you're in for a major headache. If you want a totally revolutionized game you'll be disappointed. Despite some changes (some good, some bad) it's essentially more of the same. If you remember the 1.3 beta patch, this is a natural progression of that, plus lots of Episode III content replacing the AOTC content (but still many bugs remain, tons of inaccuracey with the movies, and a very similar look and feel to everything).

Also, you can't lay prone anymore, but you can sprint and roll forwards as well as sideways (with a seperate key) which depletes your "stamina" bar (energy meter). Ships can do "tricks" (which use up the energy meter) and lack cockpit displays (just a plain first person camera). Vehicles and turrets lack first person view for the most part, and no cockpit views. Jedi are playable, but no longer immortal. They have manual blocking (that drains their energy) and limited force powers (drains energy) like a floating double jump and floaty sprint and another pair of powers (usually a combination of push, pull, lightning or grip and saber throw). There are non-Jedi heroes as well, who just have really good pistols and "buff" powers (gives your nearby teammates a temporary powerup), detpacks and Jetpacks (Jango and Boba Fett only).

woo great response! thanks. hm it all sounds decent really. and any lost maps you know either will be back officially in updates, or more likely through players modding and whatnot. i hope so when it comes to Bespin and Dune Sea, those were good i thought. those new game modes sound good too, so its not all bf1942 the all the time.
