 So are you saying that you believe the older 2005 articles that state the PS3 will be priced at US$399 over the newer 2006 news articles like the one I posted from money.CNN.com dated 2006 JAN 11 <link> that says it will more likely be US$500?

holy crap, i just explained that in my last post and the post before that...the CNN article was wrong, the Howard said nothing about the price...

On another note, does anybody have a sense for the differences in game programming between the PS3 and the XBOX 360? I've got very little in the way of programming knowledge but I'm wondering how much effort it would take to port an XBOX 360 game over to PS3 and vice versa. Will it require more work than it did between XBOX and PS2? Of course, I'm trying to get a feel for whether or not KotOR 3 would have the potential for releasing for both XBOX 360 and PS3... :D

isn't that illegal? to take a ps3 game and make it a 360 game? means u have to like back it up on ur comp. then reprogram to ps3 format or something...

Down here in Australia the Xbox360 is selling for 649AUD and everyone is betting the PS3 will debut at around 1000AUD. maybe a lil less.

In all honesty, if Sony wants to sell this console at a competative price to the 260 they'll have to be prepared to take SEVERE losses from it in the first few years... and out of all three companies, Sony is the last company that should be throwing away money like this.

@ REDJOHNNYMIKE: Wow, did you get inside info that the Revolution will only be able to push out NES graphics? :dozey:

Remember kids, before you go on about how great graphics are, just remember that the PS2 is the most popular platform this generation and it's got the shoddiest graphics of the three. And lookie at how the DS is going, you would've thought the PSP would do better seeing it has the better graphics.

Indeed. Sony is keeping their cards very close to their chest on the subject of PS3 price. It will be interesting to see if Sony sets the price at the level the analysts are predicting or if they decide to surprise everyone. Doesn't seem like they could really afford to as the components for the PS3 are much more expensive than the PSP.

Understood. :) But you still haven't answered my question... ;)

thing is that all the ones that say that the price is gunna be $399 are all dated to early 2005 and all the ones that say it might be more are dated to Febuary or January 2006 :S
You refer to multiple sources from 2005 that state the PS3 would be US$399 so I assumed you weren't relying solely on the CNN article that misquoted "the Howard" (as you say). It just seemed to me like you were discounting the more recent news sources and I couldn't understand why.

Is it my turn to sigh now? ;) I wasn't referring to end users doing the porting as that would indeed be violating copyright laws. It would be game developers doing the porting work and since they are the ones who either own or having licensing rights to the IP then of course it's perfectly legal for them to do that kind of work. The arstechnica.com article I linked to seems to think that game publishers will pretty much be forced to expand their offerings across more consoles than previously done. While I see this scenario as a distinct possibility I don't believe it's a foregone conclusion at this point in time. I was disappointed to read the author's opinion that game designers won't even try to optimize their games for a specific platform but will instead focus their coding efforts on cross-platform compatibility. Seems like my mouthwatering was a little premature... :(

Oh yeah, and as far as the PS3 coming out in another month or so. Go with "or so" because I don't think the PS3 will be released until after this year's E3 in May.
After re-reading this I thought I should clarify that it sounds like the PS3 won't be released in the USA until sometime after this year's E3. It just depends on where in the world you live as to when you will be able to buy the PS3. Obviously Japan will get first crack. Seems like the USA will be in the middle or end of the line for PS3 availability.

I dont think anyone ever realistically though that...since it costs x2 the DS,and the games are more expensive :)

the psp might have done better if it sported a nice HDD rather than those darn UMDs.

UMD is to this decade what betamax was to 70s :p lolz

btw Lynky, any news on a 'Kittendo' game ? I;d buy a DS just to play that :)

XD Everyone I know and don't know who isn't a Nintendo fan believe that the fact that the PSP had better graphics would mean it'd sell better than the DS.

As for Betamax, I'd rather Beta had've won back then than VHS cause they were smaller and higher quality than VHS. VHS just won because the porn industry started using VHS tapes. As for UMDs, you're getting porn on that too but it hasn't come to the same affect since there are already better established formats out there such as DVD and anything you can put on your PC...

And no word on a Kittendo game at this time, Nintendo are too busy with the DS lite and a hellova lot of other games that are gonna make this another year where the DS will absolutely kickass. XD Looking at it now, it's obvious that Nintendo has been purposely holding back and bring forward a few things.

Just look at the DS lite, it's only a lil more year and a few months since the original DS was released and now we're getting an upgrade. Why? Not because Nintendo is greedy, but because Nintendo is smart. The only nextgen console to be released at the moment is the Xbox360, and other than the US the 360 isn't making that much of an impact, at least for the moment. The biggest thing Nintendo has to worry about is the Revolution launch and the PS3.

Launching the DS lite now will ensure that they get a maximum percentage of sales down before people start to focus on these two nextgen consoles. Also, the DS lite shares the same design principles as the Revolution, it's the next step in their plan. And to add to that, a whole lot of great games are about to come out for the DS. Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and the Brain Training games were just the beginning. This year we'll be getting Metroid Prime Hunters, New Super Mario Bros. and a TONNE of RPGs as well as Opera DS.

The DS is gonna have another kickass year but make no mistake that Nintendo has already timetabled this not to disrupt their Revolution plans. Nintendo will come full force with Revolution and they will also remind people that The Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess, while being a GCN game, can be played on the NRV.

At the current momentum Nintendo is moving at, it doesn't matter if Nintendo releases the Revolution or not, they're really raking in the cash with the DS alone lol. But however the Revolution goes, it will DEFINATELY do better than the GCN did purely because it has something new and exciting this time, unlike the GCN which was just another standard console.

@Lynk, I was referring to Nintendo's love of all things BRIGHT-HAPPY-SUPER-FUN-NUMBER ONE!!! Not the quality of the graphics hardware;)

@MTV2, Remind me not to visit your neighborhood any time soon:lol:

I'm pretty sure mah pal Sithy can give me an AMEN to dat;)

I don't know much about the complications involved with programming for each system, but I'd have to say Compatibility is one thing I hope for (not gonna get it though:().

Imagine...Me kicking back in my comfy chair playing HALO 4 on my 360 in a RevengeOfBloodGulch CTF against a PS3 buddy in Tokyo.

OWNED!!!

I hate it that certain people buy an X-Box or Playstation because 'Nintendo is kiddy.' People just make up that excuse because their friends shoot eachothers brains out on X-Box live, and they would feel ashamed buying a Cube.

Although i have playstation, the gamcube is my favourite console.

Playstation is a bit more main-stream, while Nintendo produces inoovative, new gameplay. Who created anologe control? Nintendo. Who created handhelds? Nintendo.

One of my friends once said that Zelda is on a level of 3-year olds.

I let him play WW, and he got stuck after dungeon 1. Now he has bought himself a Cube ^^

To conclude:

If you want to judge consoles, don't let your own prejudices count. Try to see it as objective as you can, and judge games on their gameplay, not graphics.

PS: With the new Revolution controller and onlinee-opportunities, i think Revolution could be the best Shooter-console.

@ MTV2 - I think he was referring to your previous post about the inexpensive AK-47's in Australia.

wow, video games can be 1000AUD but an ak-47 in australia is 7 bucks...
But as far as the reference to "Sithy" I assume he's talking about Insane Sith and I've got no clue on that one. Keep in mind that REDJOHNNYMIKE is an Ohio State University Buckeye fanatic (his avatar sports an OSU cap) and those peeps are kind of whacked in the head... :D

@ RJM - :xp:

Well here's another article <link> from today's Financial Times that quotes Merrill Lynch analysts hearing there is a further delay with the PS3 launch and that it might not become available in Japan until November...

Sony has indicated a Spring launch for its console in Japan and the industry is not expecting a North American launch until November. But Hitoshi Kuriyama of Merrill Lynch in Japan says there are reports that the PS3 could be delayed by between six and 12 months, meaning an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the US.

Also, Merrill Lynch analysts in San Francisco have estimated that the initial bill of materials for PS3 could approach $900, falling to $320 by three years after launch.

The implications are that Sony could have to decide to make a substantial loss on the PS3 through subsidies or risk low sales at the higher price and hand the advantage to Microsoft – first to market with its Xbox 360 next-generation console.

I don't know what to think anymore. I see two likely possibilities,

1) Sony is putting out false information in it's manufacturing channels to keep everyone off balance or

2) There are a lot more challenges with manufacture of the PS3 than Sony anticipated.

I can't think of any reason why Sony would do #1 so I'm thinking #2 is the real reason. And I'm also thinking that if Sony lets another North American holiday season go by without offering competition to the XBOX 360 then Sony will have a serious hole to dig itself out of in this market. I don't see how Sony can afford to do that. And if (big if) LucasArts was thinking of publishing KotOR 3 for XBOX360 and PS3 then a PS3 launch delay like this may very well scrap those plans.

@Lynk, I didn't say there weren't any good ones, just that they tend to have a lot more kiddie games than Sony and Mikey. I've just never seen nintendo deliver the overall maturity that the others do.

I did try metroid though, I hated the controls:lol:

Unless they really step up with some Halos it's not enough for me to divert funds towards it.

And most importantly, what's KIII going to be on?

@MTV2, Sithy had a bad experience, and unless I had a good reason, I wouldn't hang out someplace where automatic weapons cost less than lunch;)

@Hai, You don't know our glorius leader's nickname?

And at least we whack others in the head harder............and win;)

Last time I checked you didn't have a "glorious" leader, heh-heh-heh. :smirk2: And yes, I still have to eat crow for the results of last year's "The Game." Sucks big-time!!!

In case anyone is interested, I created a poll in the Cantina for people who want to hazard a guess as to when the PS3 will launch in North America. :brow: Click <here> to cast your vote!

  • Sony and Microsoft make games? Isn't it more like they get other companies to make those games and simply buy them out of throw money at them to get exclusive deals? Sony and Microsoft don't do anything. You wanna talk about Halo? Halo isn't Microsoft, it's Bungie. And people should remember that when they credit Microsoft for doing a great job with Halo, Bungie deserves the credit, not Microsoft.
  • Nintendo not deliver overall maturity? What's mature? Well let's see, according to most gamers these days, which are ruled by a teen majority... Games that have many different ways to kill a person, or how chunks fly around when you blow someone up. Or how you can paint the walls with blood when you gut that guy with your knife... It's not necessarily mature just cause it's got a Mature rating printed on the box. All this does is help to demonise the gaming industry.
  • OMG Ninendo is teh kiddy!!!!1 Eh? Wait? Shouldn't I be playing Halo then since I'm 21? I guess I'm just not mature enough to kill virtual people :(
  • Of course you hated the controls, you thought Metroid was an FPS game.

then whats Microsoft Game Studios?

And on the Halo game box thing, it says Bungie on it and Gearbox Software on it.

Does the money grows in trees for you? If there will be no normal games for pc i will just wait couple more years for emulator -_- There is no way i could get ps3 or xbox 360 (well if only there would be a major set of circumstances) Nintendo games are the best. I love those graphycs, even tho they are kinda anime. so. yeah. And my classmate has every new console and he is just buying football games and sims2. Not that i am poor or something but still. 400$ for a console...

@ Com: Yeah, Max Payne is good :D

@ MTV2: It doesn't matter who owns what, Halo is still Bungie's game and without Bungie, Microsoft's console campaign would crumble. We all know it. And aren't Gearbox the folks who just ported Halo to PC? :dozey: They didn't make the game, they were just hired to do a lil job so that Bungie wasn't bogged down when they're busy created the next Halo.

My point still stands, Microsoft doesn't actually deserve the credit for Halo, Bungie does. It's a simple concept.
