vader815
Does anyone else find it wierd that an intergalactic organization, the republic, does not have a true offical army and that the jedi are the closest thing to soidlers for it. In Knights of the Old Republic they have an army to defend against a galactic threat, why don't they have one when the CIS attacks. MachineCult
Before the Clone Wars the Republic relied on the home fleets and armies of planets if they were required, but there hadn't been any need for a Republic army for thousands of years. When the CIS attacked they had the Army.
vader815
which brings me to the unrealistic point that the Republic had gone for thousands of years without a full war
Kurgan
Or 1,000 years if you go by the movies and movie novelisations only. The only thing out of place now in that chronology is Obi-Wan's statement in ANH, and the EU at large. No army and no "full scale" wars (the Clone War is considered a "full scale" warr) for 1,000 years in a galaxy-wide Republic is pretty amazing, but that's what Lucas tells us is the story. I don't think it's really that amazing. Pretty good, yeah, but if you are the dominant government in the galaxy who's gonna challenge you in a full scale war? arkodeon
I don't think it's really that amazing. Pretty good, yeah, but if you are the dominant government in the galaxy who's gonna challenge you in a full scale war? Exactly. If the Republic benefits everyone, then what is the reason to attack it? The Sith were the major contenders against the Republic before Ruusan, and with the Sith gone, there was no longer any major opposition to the Government. Granted, small scale wars, like the Stark Hyperspace War, did occur, but there was never any need to call upon a Republican army, as the Jedi did just fine. It was only after the Republic started to decay, and other governments/organizations felt slandered and abandoned, that the Republic truely needed an army to combat another. That also brings up another point: What organization/government would have the support of a large-scale army when the Republic benefitted everyone, right up until its fall? It just doesn't seem sound... 100,000+ Planets > 1 Government/Organization.
PoiuyWired
Well, war between a few planets are not considered to be "full scale" And usually it is pretty hard to gether an army big enough to threaten the republic, even if the republic is decentralized as it had been. Davinq
In that 1000 years, the galaxy never had an opressive Sith Lord organizing separatist groups now, did they?
Kurgan
Well, war between a few planets are not considered to be "full scale" And usually it is pretty hard to gether an army big enough to threaten the republic, even if the republic is decentralized as it had been. Nonsense, considering apparently one planet (or system) was able to create a secret army (though it took them 10 years because clones take so long to grow to maturity and train) that was capable of defending against the Seperatists. Geonosis alone seems capable of producing a droid army (which seems common technology for any Star Wars level industrialized system) that can threaten another system. I imagine if they really had no army to defend the Republic, they would have volunteered troops like the United Nations or at least had a space navy (hinted at in the EU at least). The thing is, we have clear evidence that systems had their own defenses pre-Clone Wars, we just happened to be focusing on Naboo, a supposedly pacifist nation (of course the isolationist Gungans were "warriors" but the planet seemed represented by the "peaceful" Naboo humans, who had only a small police force and some token aircraft). So I imagine each habited planet at least having a token defense force, whether or not the Republic itself had its own official army under its direct control (which seems to be what the Grand Army was). The Sith may not have been around, but all sorts of "local troubles" would inevitably have happened in a thousand years with hundreds of thousands of systems and hundreds or thousands of alien races. That was supposedly the job of the Jedi Knights, to keep order. It's just that with only 10,000 of them (even if that ONLY includes battle ready Knights, not Younglings, Padawans, and people who just sit in the temple all day meditating or shelving library books) you'd be hard pressed to maintain order in the Galaxy. Either things had really gotten bad by this point (maybe there were far more Jedi at one time), or they have some really good law enforcement in the rest of the galaxy (Anakin explicitly mentions local authorities in Coruscant, so I imagine other planets are similar). The Republic is also supposedly smaller than the Empire (if even only slightly), so they don't control the whole galaxy (even if a big portion of the habited parts). Plus you've got the neighboring galaxies with their own powers there.
PoiuyWired
Well, YES every planet is supposed to have its defence force, and most have more than that. It seems to me that the past "big wars" in the republic are wars against different fractions of the republic, with the "enemy" not labeled as the Republic itself. So technically (and not surprisingly) the Republic may go like "ok you guys have fun killing each other and when the dust is settled the Republic will recognize the right of the winner" or something like that. Well if not for the intervention and such "war of Naboo" would typically end as Republic acknowledging rights of Trade Feds as Naboo, so there is no "war".
