Terrain with stripes, black sky

I'd really appreciate some help with this weird issue on Battlefront 1:

The sky is black and the terrain is littered with semi-transparent vertical stripes which seem to move when the character moves. It's quite annoying.

 

The first time I installed the game it ran fine, with normal sky and terrain, I even finished it. After reinstalling Windows it came up with this problem. I've reinstalled both Windows and the game several times eversince. All drivers are the same. I've tweaked every setting on the game and my video card. The problem persists. Even tried older versions of directx, to no avail.

 

I'm running a Toshiba Sat 1110, 1500 celeron, 16mb Ati MobilityRadeon, 512 Ram, Windows XP pro service pack2, directx9c. Hey, I know it's slow, but the game worked fine the first time, so the problem must be solvable without altering the hardware. I just don't know how.
