End battles

So, i was coming towards the end of a 3 day (real days) campaign against the rebel alliance. I didnt control all of the planets, but was able to "corner" the rebels and end up isolating their main force (and most hero units) on Hoth. I assembled all my forces i had at the time and assaulted the space station. I ended up TOTALLY under estimating their size, they had about 20 assault frigates so i ended up loosing 3 destroyers, 5 victories and a couple of tartans so i decided to retreat and regroup. Hoth btw, is horrible for large capital ships to attack cuz of the asteroid field. Anyway, i rebuilt and included the death star determined to end the war right here right now :p

The Rebellion had no chance defending against such a punishing force and ended up being annihilated by the death star, ending the game and returning order to the galaxy. All in all, pretty freakin awesome to have the music goin on cue, death star count down with rebel fighters (many, many A-Wings) and seeing vader vs luke in space and having the game end in a planet blowing up in classic starwars fashion.

EAW always seems to throw up very exciting and dramatic important and end battles in space and on the ground. My only problem with the whole thing, is the death star count down is way too short. It needs to be more like 10 mins to force the use of the death star as something "really huge" rather than just a 1 min count down and boom.

Thoughts?

That's why you get the timer when the Imperial player starts building the Death Star. The Rebel player's best chance is to get to the planet where it's being constructed as quickly as possible and destroy the Space Station. Once the Death Star is finished it's going to rip through the Rebel planets, which is precisely what it's supposed to do.

I think the rebels have the best chance if they start to build a large fleet that includes luke. That way when the DS starts to make its attacks, you can hit it with everything you have and pray that luke survives. One thing I like to do against a real player in a GC game is to move Mon Mothma along with as many ships as possible (including Luke) to one of my planets with a level 5 station. That tends to be too tempting a target for the Imperial player and they usually send everything that have, including the DS, to that planet. The nice thing is the DS moves so friggin slow that all you need to do is move Mon Mothma to another world at the last second. Then when the DS and it's escorting fleet arrives, I do my best to hold out and keep luke safe and it won't matter if they blow the planet up since Mon Mothma is safe somewhere else. More often than not, I end up surviving the battle (level 5 stations are tough to bring down) and blowing up the DS for teh win. :) Honestly though, most GC games don't last long enough to get a DS anyway. It's fun when it does happen though. :)

Wow, that is the exact mirror of what occured in my last galactic conquest. The only difference is when I fought the final battle against the rebels on Hoth they had every hero in the space battle (Except Mon Mothma) and they had 34 MK 2 frigates and 20 Gunships with a LOT of starfighters. It was an epic final battle both in space and on the ground to say the least.

Now to get on topic I think the death star timer is fine the way it is. Playing as the rebels against the death star would not be as fun with a longer timer, the short timer adds tension and urgency to the battle. Just my opinion anyway.

I dunno - has anyone ever managed to save a planet from the DS??

There is a point where "hard and exciting" ends and "impossible thus boring" begins.... it would IMHO be more exciting if the timer was like 5 min, since most space battles last that long anyway and the Rebels had a better chance of destroying the DS before it destroys the planet.

It'd be awesome if all the rebels had to do was get an x-wing to a specific point on the map (where the imperials first arrive) to start the "death star run". Then its a matter of randomness if the x-wing is succesfull (if it is, cutscene begins). And Luke has the most chance of making the run work. That way you can have some involvement in destroying the death star and it isnt all about destroying the fleet.

I always play against AI opponents (Online play doesn't work for some reason) and I have only beaten the Imperial fleet once before the death star was in range. It was on hard mode campaign (the closest to having a human opponent as possible) and the Imperials arrived with a Star Destroyer and its' normal garrison fleet of 2 tartans, and 2 Victory cruisers. I had Home One, Luke, Han Solo, 2 Mon Cals and a lot of Y-wings and A-wings and I won the battle 10 seconds before the death star was in range.

It is possible to win but only if the Imperials arrive without the intention of prolonging the battle, in other words without 10-15 Star Destroyers.
