fanboys/girls of team green will be pleased to hear that nvidia have just tweeted to the world that they will be freakin finally launching the GTX 480 and 470 on March 26 (most likely at the Penny Arcade Expo)

After all the drama of the foundry floundering lets just hope the wait has been worth anything more than an anticlimax. Will it topple >60fps in CRYEngine1 at >1080p, or even 1600p?

Hence a notification to ATI/AMD 59xx owners : You probably have 1 month of internet e-penis braggage left. Use it wisely ;)

Hopefully nvidia doesn't get too carried away with their pricing :p

edit:

Listings are starting to appear at around the interwebs. 512 stream processors and 1-2GB DDR5... I wonder how hot these things will get ?? ;)

Well, that price listing looks legit, as that is typical nVidia pricing, alright. Greedy bastards.

That thing better be the second coming of silicon in order to justify the ridiculous asking price after such a long wait.

Just a FYI, the 196.75 WHQL have been retracted from nvidia site following major issues with fan speeds. A horde of users worldwide are reporting burnt out cards. I'm not sure what the implication is for shuttle fans as (obviously) there is no listing for exact hardware combinations that cause this.

A roll back to previous 196.21 WHQL is recommended. Of course, if you've had no problems, then it's up to you ;)

My Shuttle SX58H7 and EVGA 295 CO-op seemed unaffacted, but being a mildly paranoid type(seeing all this kit cost me a bit, I have rolled back :p) Drivers have since been taken down nvidia's site and places like Guru3D etc

more info from nvidia >>

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us

Alot of OEMs would be fuming if they ended up with thousands of RMA requests because of this stuff up by nvidia... I cant believe it didn't get squashed during beta phase.

Fingers crossed it wont affect too many LFNers

Still running the 195.62 drivers so no problem for me. :D I planned on going to 196.21 drivers once I'm done playing Dragon Age: Origins and move to ME2. Never let it be said that I was one on the bleeding edge when it came to drivers. :p

BrightSideofNews is reporting that the GTX 480 will have 480 cores instead of 512 cores. Guess that means the yields out of TSMC still aren't making the grade. *sigh*

Summary of GTX 480 price and specs BSN provides are

480 cores

384-bit interface

1.54 GB GDDR5

USD$449-499

Summary of GTX 470 price and specs

448 cores

320-bit interface

1.28 GB GDDR5

USD$299-349

No mention of clock and memory speeds though if word on the web can be believed the core clock is in low 600 MHz range. Guess we'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks. ATM I'm thinking I may just wait for the next die shrink before I buy a DX11 card.

Im wondering if the 480 SPs is a base spec - and whether companies like XFX, BFG, EVGA will roll out higher SP editions in future, as happened with the GTX 260.

Various places have also reported that retailers have pushed the Fermi release date back slightly to April 6th.

The Intel Hexacore, 12 threaded, 32nm Corei7 980X has recently hit stores. Described by reviewers around the word as 'obscenely fast', at $999USD or thereabouts - it is also obscenely priced ;)

In other more amusing news, Apple/Jobs seems to be getting increasingly irate/nuts/?distracted.... Apart from his constant swipes at Adobe over Flash, a recent multi patent infringement lawsuit has been filed against phone makers HTC, which is chiefly viewed as a swipe at Google/Android.

The ongoing feud between Jobs and Google CEO Eric Schmidt has been outed in recent press... with sources saying "Steve Jobs just simply hates Eric Schmidt"

lolz.

With the underwhelming response to the iPad, Android making up great ground in the mobile market since the release of 2.0, and a huge slice of the market already drooling over Windows Phone 7, 2010 isn't shaping up to be a super year for Apple. Jobs lawsuit lust isn't helping their PR much.

Are you rich, a corporation, a show-off, or uber Adobe CS4 user:

Then you might want to check out EVGA's SR-2 mainboard, capable of supporting 2x Hexacore Xeons - giving you access to a total of 24 threads... phaw ! Who needs Moore's Law when you can just double up with a wad of cash. A corei7 980x ready version isnt out yet, just in case you think you want one.

Also caters for 4 way SLI/Crossfire and 48GBDDR3.... released at around $600USD - even before you think about GPUs/RAM/HDD, your looking at $2600USD to get this thing out of the box.

Crazy, Amazing... or Cramazing if you're lazy.

More info from EVGA directly. For those curious, SR2 stands for Super Record 2 - though the gamers among us love the Normandy Reference of course, whether intended or not.

* * *

In other news, those curious about Windows Phone 7 may want to check out engadgets detailed coverage from the MIX10 conference, as well as their blurrycam video of a WPS7 phone gaming - replete with 3D. Definitely looks on par with the iPhone/Ipod touch in that respect... with nvidia Tegra under the hood, that's not really a surprise.

What was a surprise was MS announcement that WP7 will NOT be sporting direct cut and paste, which has ired a few folks out there - especially since many WinMo fans were so eager to mock the iPhone for the lack of this (until version 3). MS has said it will have context specific based functions that will allow you to achieve pasting but not a universal clipboard as was featured in WinMo since it's most earliest iterations. Hmm....

VR zone has leaked the eagerly nerd-ticipated clocks on the Fermi cards. So to add to what Char has listed above:

GTX 480:

*$499USD

*480 shader processors

*384-bit interface to 1.5GB of onboard GDDR5 RAM,

*700MHz core clock

*1,401MHz shader clock

*1,848MHz memory clock

*295W TDP

GTX 470

*$349

*446 SPs, slower clocks, and a 320-bit memory interface

*607/1215/1674MHz core/shader/mem,

*1280MB GDDR5

*225W

Scarily, the VR-Zone leakster also states that there are plans for a dual fermi card... one can only imagine the TDP on a GTX 490(480X2). phaw.. you may need to invest in one of these to keep it running :p

and to sign off, here's some GPU pRon

assuming that Nvidia's own benchmarks aren't exaggerated, you're only going to see about a 10-20% improvement in performance with the GTX 480 over a Radeon 5870, and the card looks to be even more power hungry to boot. what's even more troublesome is that you can get a Sapphire Vapor-X edition 5870 for ~$20 USD less than the GTX 480. that one is overclocked and gets a nice little boost that further cuts into Fermi's lead.

sorry, but Fermi's a hard sell for me.:carms:

Nvidia's own benchmarks aren't exaggerated

They're not comprehensive enough to make any definitive statement about the overall performance of the cards vs its AMD counterparts.

Plus you don't need benchies to know that the top tier nvidia cards are overpriced!! :thmbup1:

I myself cant see me ditching the GTX 295 co-op either, but am still eager to see some proper benchies, power and heat, and folding numbers ;)

Do you mean he 5970 (5870X2)? The 5870 can be had for ~$380 USD. The 5970 is $500ish, I think. It's confusing, I know.

Oops. Apparently the 5970 is ~$600ish, which makes more sense, given that it's the rough equivalent of 2 5870s.

Recently, e-tailers have been selling the 5870 for ~$380 like I said, though.

yeah, i can get a "stock" 5870 for about under $400, but i was referring to Sapphire's Vapor-X which commands a ~$70-80 premium due to the aftermarket cooler (which does an excellent cooling job) and a somewhat mild factory overclock which accounts for the extra performance.

no biggie, though. ;)

The GTX 480/470 Reviews are starting to come filter out - Here's a couple:

*Guru3D

*Bright side of news (includes folding and SLI numbers)

Longstoryshort:

*Overall, the 'fastest' single GPU card (but not staggeringly so compared to the 5870)

*Up to 1900x1200, up to 10% improvement on various games(tested with beta drivers) compared to the 5870(with new 10.3 drivers)

*1600p: taper out to be the same

*5870 uses less power

*Neither can best Crytek 2.0 above HD, STILL :thmbup1:

*folding: 13,000 PPD - ie, about a 60% improvement on the GTX 280.

*Expensive: yes

Interesting card, but I wont be ditching my GTX 295 anytime soon - if nvidia partners such as XFX and EVGA release a GTX 490(2x480) on a single PCB... it would be interesting.

So recent predictions for Fermi/GF100 were fairly close to the mark. A good performer but sucks a lot of power, is hot and noisy. Still thinking I'll wait for some time for a die shrink or other power consumption improvements before I pull the trigger on a new DX11 card.

Since I run folding@home power consumption has become one of my top concerns when making a choice for a new graphics card. I waited for the 9800 GTX+ to come out in August 2008(?) since it was a die shrink of 9800 GTX to 55 nm. Unfortunately the 9800 GTX+ still required two 6-pin connectors, same as the 9800 GTX, and featured only slightly lower power consumption. This past December I purchased an MSI GTS 250, essentially an improved design of the 9800 GTX+ with 2x the RAM, and it only featured one 6-pin power connector. My takeaway from this experience? I need to wait for a GPU generation to mature so that I can get the benefit of all those little refinements and improvements the manufacturing companies make as they go.

In other Fermi news, word on the web is that the GTS 4xx line of cards will be making their debut in June or July, featuring 192-256 CUDA cores on 192-256 bit bus.

Yep, the die shrink is the way to go. The First 295s were also furnaces. Before I give my 295 up, I'll see if EVGA can come up with a single PCB 2xGTX 480 that runs cooler and greener ;)

With major silicon foundries starting to brag about their yields again, hopefully it wont be too long ;)

It was on the cards, but the chick iPhone is starting to lose some major ground to android, especially since the release of the motorola DROID series, replete with Android 2.0

Read more about the data here and here - which is US centric of course.

Of course we know how Steve Jobs chose to react to this - launching a super mega multi lawsuit against HTC earlier this year ;)

Google acquires AdMob for $750 million

I :xp: at your source. hehehe (j/k)

Being an iPhone owner/user all I can say is.. about damn time there's some good competition. Apple needs a swift kick in the arse to get it's devs in gear. It can only benefit both Android and iPhone users in all honesty. My friend at work has an Android and it's a pretty sweet phone. I get to look at it a lot since he's always wanting to use mine ;) (I keeeeed!)

Just cross your fingers iPhone doesn't break the AT&T stonewall. :ohdear:

Should Apple float to Verizon.. there will be a Fanboi War that the world has never seen.

I think I'll quit the internet the day that happens. Too much nerd-rage, bile and ePenis swagging about whose smartphone can download the most porn the fastest.

Oh yeah, there's an app for that!

I am disappointed. I expected that app to be one attempting to break the speed record for nonstop smartphone porn downloading, not a ruler. :p

And to stay on topic: Cisco claims to have created a router that can deliver a staggering 322 terabits/second.

Now, before people get too excited about this, keep in mind that the speed hasn't been tested outside of Cisco to my knowledge, and that in order for it to be completely effective, it would need to be introduced in a huge number of places in the communications infrastructure, which would take time and money, both of which corporations don't enjoy spending unnecessarily.

The card features 1600*2 stream processors, core/memory clock of 850/1200MHz (4800MHz), 4GB of memory, and six mini-DisplayPort connectors for six displays. The card employs dual 8-pin power design, with the turbo fan centrally located to enhance the cooling performance for both GPUs.

 dear gawdz...

well, although it's $1,000, you'd probably save some money since you wouldn't have a heating bill. Just turn on the comp. :xp: hehehe

Fermi's benchmark results should come as no surprise. The 6-month delay indicated to me that it would be an underwhelming part once it was finally released. Sure, it beats the 5870, but it draws more power than the dual-GPU 5970 in order to do it. Impressive! :dozey:

No, it's not quite a failure of GeForce FX proportions, but, especially at the typically outrageous asking price, Fermi is still a dud. ATI wins this round.

ATI wins this round.

Arguably - they both have failed. When software devs are still outstripping the ability of mainstream desktop hardware(even at the enthusiast grade), it's indiciative that the way cards are designed need to be re-evaluated.

Are they just going to keep cramming stream processors, more hot'n'steamy GDDR5 and then demand users sport 1000W PSUs to run the damn things??

It reeks of inefficiency. I can tell them what they need to do next, all they have to do is ask :thmbup1::D
