What is the best type of computer in your mind? The Vista: Many reports of proplems but awesome looking, XP: Fast But Sloppy looks compared to the others. Mac: Great Interface and nice dock.

Mine is the XP, becasuse its fast, you can always download a dock like rocketdock, and get a Vista theme. You'll have a Xtamac. What im talking about:

Also the question should be: "What's your favorite operating system?"
Yeah, I thought it meant manufacturer at first. I was all ready to say "Dell sucks!".

XP definitely. My new PC came with Vista, and I had planned beforehand to install XP. I tried Vista for a bit, just to see if maybe I would actually like it... and to make restoration DVDs. And for the 20 or so minutes I was on Vista, I hated it. It was so slow on my 1 gig memory. And all the pop-ups on the desktop were annoying.

XP, because Vista is an unstable and incompatible piece of crap at the moment. I have nothing against Linux, but since there are no games that can run on Linux (at least none that I know of) and that's what I mostly use my PC for (that and the Net and watching movies and listening to music).

Topic title and poll edited to better reflect the question posed.

Most PC manufacturers give you the option of choosing either XP or Vista on new computers, so I'm surprised that you opted to have Vista installed instead of XP, especially if you planned to just reformat it. I hope you didn't pay for the Vista license, because if you did, you've put $100~ in the tank. With RAM being so cheap nowadays, I'm also surprised that you went with only a gig, when 2 gigs is easily obtainable and much better for future-proofing your machine. And if by the pop-ups you mean the Windows Sidebar, do know that you can turn it off.

The reason I think so many people are looking at Vista so negatively is from what they've heard from other people, usually review sites and other publications, complaining about all the bugs and whatnot. You go into using Vista with those preconceived notions about it and of course you're not going to like it, because you've already set yourself up to hate it. Believe it or not, XP went through a similar experience when it was first launched and today it is still one of the most popular OSes used.

I use Vista on one of my home computers and XP on the other and both work just fine for me. I have not experienced anything negative with Vista, like crashing (Ran it for a week straight before rebooting for program installation/overclocking) or program incompatibility (I run the x64 version and Vista's 32-bit emulation is superb, as I've been able to run everything I used to run on my XP system without a hitch). On the whole, it really is a decent, workable and very pretty operating system, which is exactly what I wanted when I paid for it.

Brainwashed by Thrik and Astro (omg it runs stuff lolz) :o

I wouldn't mind Vista so much (since I do think it looks nice) if it didn't waste so much damn memory. Linux with compiz-fusion uses far less than Vista, and XP with WindowBlinds 6 uses way less memory as well.

Also I plan to set up a dual boot of FreeBSD 7 and XP when I fix up my desktop.

WinXP Pro SP2 ftwwwww (Although I do pray that SP3 will drop soon since there are about 90 hotfixes and patches post-SP2, so reformatting gets to be a serious drag)

I'm not patient enough to try and run Linux et. al. although I do have a fair amount of older machines around...I routinely consider it and think the better of it, tho =)

Vista won't really shine until after at least the first service pack. XP seemed great out of the box but had a host of problems...SP1 helped a fair amount, but it also introduced new problems that weren't fully resolved until SP2. Vista will probably grow up the same way; Microsoft seems to like to have their beta testers pay full price to check out the software XD

Oh believe me, they are right! ;)

XP did have it's problems, but to so much that all your files disappear (a.k.a. needs a repartitioning event  ) from a disk cleanup?! I think not!

The whole Windows Aero transparency look is cool, but the bottom line is the OS is too unstable to be worthy of a release, plus add to the fact that XP skins can give a "Vista like look" anyway. The Media Centre is also cool, but again this is available with the XP Media Centre Edition. It seems to me that M$ has just cut corners for a faster release - in short they have released a BETA of Vista IMO, and a buggy one at that. Let's just hope the SPs sort the problems out, but at the moment i'd recommend people stick with XP or the MACs.

:lol:Motion Seconded!!

No, I called up HP (which is better than the rip-offs at Dell) and they don't offer it anymore. Even with that fact, it was still more worthwhile to buy from HP than Dell.

My favorite is Linux but I use Windows more these days because of programs that only run in it for school and for gaming. Windows XP Pro SP2 is a pretty nice OS but I just like the customization and technical aspects or using Linux. I've never used Vista extensively enough to give it a fair opinion but from what I've heard its something I'll want to wait a bit for still.

While I think Linux has a promising future, I find Windows XP the best operating system at this time. Stable, easy, powerful and reliable - maybe not customizable and a pain-in-the-ass sometimes, but it's still better than others in some ways. Well that, and the fact that 90% of the good software/games are for Windows, so there. :p

One of my computer science teachers once said about windows "If you had wrote an OS that that many stupid people were trying to use for stupid purposes it wouldn't look perfectly stable either"

dere ya all go ¬¬

That darn car went all offroad at 110 mph when I let go of the wheel. I mean, hello??!? It's not like there's somebody who could die in that car? Cars aren't supposed to get off the road at 110 mph!!1 I'll never buy a stupid Benz again. :carms:

Well I like Linux for being a wonderful system with loads of nice opensource software. But really, its a pain in the tail to try running any games on Linux(except for emulators).

So I am mostly using a stripped down version of the XP.

Vista? Giant resource hog is giant. Plus, I am not into most of the cool visual stuff anyways. I mean, being semi-translucent is not going to make me any happier...

No, I am not saying we need to go back to the commandline world. I like GUI (most of the time) but sometimes spending too much fancy stuff on it is just annoyance. Look at the UTTER STUPIDITY AND INSULT OF HUMAN MIND from the new MS office. Whoever designed that needs to have his bodyparts ripped off bits by bits and roasted in broth, with potatos, carrots and a bit of paprika, and the sole of an old shoe.

Got my first taste of Vista last night...certainly pretty...and pretty damned slow. My dad just got a new Thinkpad with a faster Core2Duo chip than the one in my desktop--yet somehow the lappy takes about 5 times longer to boot. Brilliant.

Not only that, trying to connect to Windows Update for critical patches led to--no exaggeration--41 IE7 windows. 41. Not popups. Just...41 windows, all trying to connect to the same page. Again, brilliant.

But hey, at least it's pretty.

So's my XP. It looks exactly like Vista down to the Flip3D bull****.

I've only ever used Windows 95-XP, and I can say that I like XP the best out of those (who wouldn't), but that's not saying much. I just don't have any experience with anything else.

Linux/Unix appeal to me because apparently some versions are free, but I'm really confused about it since there seems to be so many different kinds. How would I know which one to use?

Then I also don't know what (if any) benefits there are of Linux/Unix over Windows, besides the fact that you can get it for free.

Yeah, I'm really ignorant about this topic, :p
