PR-0927 Posted May 20, 2008 Share Posted May 20, 2008 So, I was just wondering about anti-virus program stuff. I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i (provided for free by my college). But, I was wondering if I should replace this with AVG Free 8 or leave it alone. I haven't had issues with it at all, but I'm mostly ignorant about anti-virus programs, and would assume a free anti-virus program would pale in comparison to a pay program (normally), am I correct? - PR-0927 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I personally use avast antivirus and have had no complaints with it, it auto-updates and isn't bloated and its free. I'm sure there are other free software that are better than paid besides this. Lorden Darkblade Posted May 20, 2008 Share Posted May 20, 2008 Well I don't know about Avast but here I used to have Norton then I moved to NOD32 which was worse then Norton by the way. It let a stupid virus get in, I had to remove it manually. It only infected .exe and dumb ones. Now I use Kaspersky Internet Security and I have no complains about it so far! Those are really only what I'm looking at, and I'm not willing to pay for anything (since I can get either for free). I guess the greatest difference is that 1) McAfee is very big, meaning both popular and bloated, 2) McAfee will be targeted by anything smart enough to look for antivirus software to kill. AOL's AVS antivirus they offered for free was great, because it was basically Kaspersky renamed as AOL, but I found out too late to get it. Anyways, if you were actually going to buy an antivirus, I would buy Kaspersky. You might also want to check out NOD32, it's very fast. edit: for some software info, this site has a good listing of pass/fail rates for many different packages (bugmenot username is october23, pass is the same). Sivy Posted May 20, 2008 Share Posted May 20, 2008 to put it simply... if you want a free one use AVG free if you want extra protection and don't mind paying for it get Norton i am, and have been for awhile, an avg fan and i personally don't see the need for anything else. however if you are more at risk of getting infected, e.g if you like downloading porn, mp3s and/or other warez from sites that claim they are 100% virus free! and you don't realise they're probably lying and you don't scan them anyway... then norton is for you. Just about the only time I even notice its running is when it has to update at start up, other than that it just runs quietly in the background. Just about the only time I even notice its running is when it has to update at start up, other than that it just runs quietly in the background. have you updated to 8.0 yet? they kept giving me the pop-up saying 7.5 would stop getting updates after May, so I updated to 8.0 and for the most part it's fine but it seemed to make pages load slower. seems it has a link scanner that automatically installs and it scans all links on a page to make sure they're safe even tho firefox already does that. but then i found this where a person showed how to install 8.0 without the link scanner and now it runs fine for me like before. They don't overload you with bull**** like the consumer versions Symantec and Norton of old. It's just a small, functional piece of non-obtrusive software. My school offers it to students for free. You could have also just disabled whatever you didn't want. I also uninstalled the Firefox extension it installed. Only other thing I disabled was the advanced email anti-spam checking. If your smart about what your doing there really isn't a need for a system hog like Norton or McAfee. Try using FireFox too - a lot better than IE in terms of security. So I ended up switching from McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i to AVG Free 8.0. I should have switched long ago. Even AVG Free 8.0 seems much better than normally licensed McAfee stuff.
