IG-64 Posted June 28, 2008 Share Posted June 28, 2008 I'm a huge Pixar fan. I just watched this last night, and it's shaping up to be one of my favorites. I don't know if it's the kind of movie kids will enjoy as much, but I certainly did. It was much slower paced than most kids films these days, but to me that's partly what made it so great (a la 2001: A Space Odyssey, to which it acknowledged in several different ways). It wasn't perfect, there is one thing that bothered me: The fat people. I can take all of the environmentalist and anti-consumerist messages and move on, but the fact that everyone was fat and lazy just bothered me. Plus, all of those scenes just weren't that great and took time away from an otherwise amazing movie to me, and that was a bummer. However, once I got over that, the movie was awesome. Great characters, interesting plot, amazing visuals. Despite some smudges on the sheen, it was another amazing experience from Pixar, and up there with my favorites. I promised the kids that we'd see it again tomorrow after they get back from their mom's house. I plan on seeing it at least once more after than at the Cine Capri (AZ's largest non-IMAX theater). The Incredibles and Finding Nemo still hold the top spots but WALL*E is giving Monsters, Inc a serious run for third place in my list if favorite Pixar films. Achilles Posted June 29, 2008 Share Posted June 29, 2008 Ratatouille was very good, but not one of my top 3. Interesting how closely the story maps to the monomyth. The Call to Adventure - WALL*E's decision to leave Earth to follow EVE. EVE's ship acts as "The Herald". Supernatural Aid - EVE. Many of her features appear magical (especially to WALL*E). Crossing the First Threshold - Breaking through the barrier of satellites. Rebirth - WALL*E recharging during the Sol fly-by. The Road of Trials - the "dream scape" journey to the Axiom. Marriage - Union between WALL*E and EVE, but this doesn't take place until the end of the movie. Apotheosis - Specifically, WALL*E on the lido deck right before he decided to chase EVE up the garbage chute. And/Or the scene in the Axiom's garbage dump. The Magic Flight - Axiom warping back to Earth Rescue from Without - Duh. The Crossing of the Return Threshold - Axiom returning to Earth and landing. Freedom to Live - The plant get's planted. Money's tight though, and I still haven't seen Get Smart.... I will if I can scrap some change together and still have enough for Dark Knight... There are too many interesting movies out this summer. Especially when a kids movie has older people generating buzz.... but Pixar does do that with every movie. I'll make an order to see it someday before I die.. There were a few old people in there, if you look closely (not including the one in the hover chair in the video). They're hard to see because they look about the same except for the hair. I have a theory as to why there were no kids besides babies. I'm sure they wanted to stay as far away from the whole childhood obesity issue as possible, especially in a (technical) kids movie. Also, my list.... well, I don't think a list would work very good, because I like them all. All I can say is that A Bug's Life was my least favorite. It's been so long since I've seen it, but I don't remember thinking it was anything special. I remember coming out of both WALL-E and Finding Nemo with a memorably happy feeling, so I might put those at the top, but I enjoyed all the others about as much. You should watch Ratatouille, it was good. blech. Wanted was awful. And not in a pleasant gun-porn awful way. Just awful. I'm glad to hear that... it looked awful. I can never shake the "man it's almost as good as Finding Nemo" feeling though. I just think Finding Nemo was the pinnacle of Pixar success.
