KOTOR 1+2: Vista Fix & Windows 7 Report

Yeah has a Vista 64 Business. I don't know much about Vista, but it sounds like that may be lacking in the graphics aspects department. He has a AMD Athalon, NVIDA 79GS. I am just suggesting not moderating, but maybe you should post on that mirror thread to tell these guys to post their specs here.

Since Vista now works with K1-2 I hope it works with a config idea I'm thinkin o隐f:

Intel Core 2 Duuo 8400 or so

4GB RAM or more

NVIDA GeForece 9800GTX

Vista Home Premium

one thing to note: make sure you run the latest patches for the game before you try to play the game. obviously, there's nothing Vista specific in the patches, but i can guarantee that you'll want the bug fixes that are included in those patches. unfortunately, one of the biggest faults with both games is the rather unfinished state they were released in hence the need for the patches. ;)

without further ado, my specs:

Asus M2N-SLI motherboard (AMD Socket AM2+; nForce 570-based)

AMD AthlonX2 4600 (overclocked to 2.8Ghz)

Kingston HyperX 2GB (4x 512MB) DDR2-800 (overclocked to 4-4-4-12 timings)

AMD Radeon HD4850 1GB GDDR3 (Catalyst 8.11 drivers installed)

Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Gamer

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit Edition

DirectX Nov. 2008

mss32.dll fix and widescreen patch installed

no mods installed

Humm maybe the problem with it not working for people is maybe not all of them know to run their patches in compatibility mode. Just a thought.

Here's a question though. If you run all the patches in compatibility mode like the HQ Music and Movies patches...the movie patch has six parts. But the part 1 is the only executable of the patches. The rest are zips. Are you to also make those 2-6 parts of the HQ Movies patches run in compatibility mode? Also, what about the mods that have a tsl patcher to install them, do you run those in compatibility mode too?

It's intersting. With KOTOR running on XP people had issues with ATI cards. Now with Vista KOTOR has problems with NVIDAs. Humm well I do remember being told that with ATI you needed to also have MS .Net Framework. I wonder if that is also the same with NVIDA cards.

I have no experience with those specific patches, however, with anything that is executable, its best to err on the side of caution and run compat mode due to the DX9 conditions it all has to run under.

If you need a more detailed answer, the mirrored thread at the workbench is probably a better place to query monds and patches.. We are focussing on the hardware side of things on this end.

Here are those nvidia fixes: Im posting them merely as a reference to anyone who is stuck and out of ideas. I have had no need of these fixes or tweaks myself.

Here is the original thread at obsidian forums for reference

SOLUTION TO KOTOR AND KOTOR 2 RANDOM CRASHES, STARTUP CRASHES AND DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING PROBLEM IN VISTA WITH NVIDIA DRIVERS :

This worked for me like a charm and took hours to solve the problem, but the game runs wonderful now without any crashes. (Just don't alt-tab while playing, the game doesn't like it.) Please note that I worked in a non-patched version of the game. But even with the patch there should be no random crashes except the game's original bugs.

PART 1 : INI file

Go to c:\program files\lucasarts\kotor2 and move swkotor2.ini to desktop, be sure the graphic options part is as follows :

[Graphics Options]

RefreshRate=60

Height=768

Width=1024

V-Sync=0

Anisotropy=8

Frame Buffer=0

Anti Aliasing=4

Texture Quality=2

Grass=1

Soft Shadows=0

Shadows=0

Brightness=57

EnableHardwareMouse=0

FullScreen=0

Sound options are as follows :

[sound Options]

Number 3D Voices=16

Number 2D Voices=24

2D3D Bias=1.00

Force Software=1

EAX=0

Sound Init=0

Music Volume=85

Voiceover Volume=85

Sound Effects Volume=85

Movie Volume=85

Disable Sound=0

After editing the file if required, remove it back to c:\program files\lucasarts\kotor2 folder.

PART II : NVIDIA Control panel

Go to your desktop right click and open NVIDIA control panel, now to the manage 3d settings and select global settings, change it as follows :

Anisotropic filtering : 16x

Anti-gamma : On

Antialias mode : App-cont

" - transparency : supersampling

Conformant text clamp : Use hardware

Err rep : Off

Ext. limit : off

Force mipmaps : Trilinear

Max. prerendered frames : 8

Multidisp/mix GPU : Single performance

Tex-filtering neg. bias : Clamp

Tex-filt. quality : High Q

Thread opt : off

Trip buffer : off

Vsync : force off

PART III : Registry setup

Click start, click start search, type regedit, run it. Search for "_swkotor.exe" (without commas). For me there were 3 entries and one of them is like :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E968-E421-11DE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000]

Under this folder, you will find _swkotor.exe entry. All entries must be REG_BINARY.

Check and add these entries :

_swkotor2.exe:D3D_16579523 01 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:D3D_30913648 01 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:D3D_60461791 47 67 41 08

_swkotor2.exe:D3D_94118636 00 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:D3DOGL_03385531 02 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:D3DOGL_12677978 60 16 62 51

_swkotor2.exe:D3DOGL_67207556 11 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:D3DOGL_70835937 27 00 32 22

_swkotor2.exe:D3DOGL_74095213 10 00 00 10

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_25631692 02 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_DefaultSwapInterval ff ff ff ff

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_ExtensionStringVersion 00 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_TexClampBehavior 00 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_ThreadControl 02 00 00 00

_swkotor2.exe:OGL_TripleBuffer 01 00 00 00

: D (with no gap changes to smile)

Close the registry editor, restart your computer and goodbye crashes... I believe OGL_ThreadControl is the critical point here. But to be sure I write all entries. Also changing all _swkotor2.exe entries to _swkotor.exe solves kotor 1 crashes, you may add them as seperate entries.

Also I changed my swkotor.ini file as follows :

[Graphics Options]

V-Sync=0

Anisotropy=8

Frame Buffer=0

Anti Aliasing=4

Texture Quality=2

Emitters=1

Grass=1

Soft Shadows=0

Shadows=0

Brightness=57

EnableHardwareMouse=0

FullScreen=0

RefreshRate=60

Width=1024

Height=768

PART IV : Bad TDR, Bad TDR...

This is an application for graphics drivers. When a driver stops responding, vista resets the device driver so the system continues stable. But the problem is old games sometimes stops responding naturally and vista thinks the game crashed. There is a fix for that problem incase your problem consists of this :

start regedit and go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Gr aphicsDrivers], add a new REG_DWORD entry as

TdrDdiDelay 120

TdrDelay 60

Close regedit.

PART V : RESTART YOUR COMPUTER

Somehow these changes requires restarting the computer to take effect.

PART VI : PLAY YOUR GAME AND SAVE OFTEN INCASE

Start your game in SP2 compability mode. Old mss32.dll is required also.

The game starts in windowed mode, but when you changed the resolution from the graphic options, it turns to fullscreen.

You should try turning on frame buffer effects and shadows as well from the ini file (Just set them to 1). I didn't care so I didn't try. But you may if it is important for you.

The game is also buggy and rarely crashes to desktop after these settings so save often. Good game although, or may be best...

RESULT : NVIDIA Drivers somehow sucks...

PART VII : LAST RESORT

Change your vista theme to classic to turn off windows aero subsytem. Also close the sidebar. As an option use CPU-control program and direct all processes to CPU1 incase you are using dualcore cpus.

Is the before MS .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 for XP or Vista's SP1? Also, your only able to run executables in compatability mode right? You can't run .zip files in compat mode right? You see that the HQ Movies patch part 1 is the executable that uses the 2-6 parts of the patch. However, the 2-6 are just .zips. I know you said if I want a more detailed answer to ask on the other mirrored thread, but since you have Vista you would probably be able to tell me if .zip files are able to be run in compat or runinng something in compat mode can only be done to executables.

winzip/winrar etc are applications themselves, hence can be configured to run in compat mode. Whether this has an impact on how it works within KOTOR within Vista.... I dont know. Best way is to try and find out ;)

yes, .net 3.x deploys on xp as well.

HERE are the details directly from MS and here you can click to download full standalone package

Remember, hardware questions here. The folks at workbench are infinitely more qualified to address code related queries.

What I find interesting is that the scan is reporting I only have 1 gig of System memory yet its reporting that I have 2 gig of video memory = the total amount of memory I ahve in my system. Also the failure of my vid card.

These are my Specs:

Vista Ultimate Patched with all updates as of Jan 5th 2009

p5n-e SLI Mobo

2 320GB HDD in Raid 0

8800GTS 320MB using 180.48 Drivers

3 Gig of Ram

E6300 Core Duo

I have installed KOTOR running as Admin and in compatabilty mode for XP SP2, I have updated using teh auto updater, I have replaced the dll file, I have made sure the swkotor.exe is set to run as Admin and in compatabilty mode for XP SP2 and made a shortcut for it and made sure there set to run as Admin and in compatabilty mode for XP SP2.

I am really at my witts end with trying to run this great game. Please can anyone help?

I have never had the secure rom issue the game has always ran fine for me and never had any errors to do with securerom.

Cheers.

@cloaked >> have you tried any of the tweaks indicated in post 31? Also, are you using a original game disc, or working off iso images?

Make sure you have the latest directx of course. It doesnt get patched via winupdate, so you need to track down the latest redist here

Have you tried maybe not cutting the rancor since that really isn't necessary? How about just walk past him? And have you saved your game up to that point?

Original disc? What did you copy it or something, or are you using a no cd patch? I'm not one of these technical guys, but hey if it isn't mandatory to cut the rancor maybe you should skip doing that.

Oops. Sorry. Just helping out. I'm glad he got it fixed. On the mirror to this there was another individual with crrashing issues and he had a NVIDA card. I suggested he use the NVIDA fixes. Hope he writes back and says SD I already have it fixed you untechnical bum. lol.

Great. I'm glad these two threads have been such a success to LF.

Prior to posting have you gone to the KOTOR section of LF and looked under the Troubleshooting sub forum and then clicked on the sub forum The Work Bench? Within that sub forum are a bunch of sticky threads. One of them I believe deals with KOTOR and laptops. If you haven't already I'd check that thread and the other stickys. It might help you.

If not Astro should be along soon to help ya.

Astrotoy7 should be along soon. If not Q or another. Sorry your still having toruble. If they don't come here within a few days just PM them a link to the thread or get them to come here. Some of these guys are busy and need a little tap on the sholder. But they are helpful and friendly. Wish I could help you more though.

You didn't have to change anything. Meaning for both K1-2 you didn't apply the fix and th above compatability instructions? If you didn't try that. There's NVIDA fixes, and of course the Work Bench section of KOTOR has other helpful sticky threads. If that doesn't help Astro should be along. PM him if he doesn't come in a few days. He should come a running then. :)

ok, im trying the fix right now and i cant find the mss32.dll in the root directory, should i just put the new one in?

Very unusual! Do you have one in the K1 directory?

New Error: "Detected Emulator." Wtf?

This sounds like something to do with the securom errors some report, which happens with downloaded versions(legal or not), or those being mounted on virtual drives. Having a program like daemon tools or Alcohol installed(which messes with securom) can also give you emulator warnings.

There is some info on securom errors for KOTOR, but you would need to search elsewhere for that.

Good luck!
