[Fixed] Get KOTOR 1/2 Working on Vista

Astrotoy7

Recommended Posts

OK, I"m trying to install KOTOR 2 and have done everything as outlined in the first few posts but it still won't work on my laptop. It has Windows 7 and an Intel chipset, but if anyone needs specific specs I can get that. Basically whenever I start a new game, after the opening credits I hear beeping on the Ebon Hawk but the screen is black, and then the game crashes. The only thing I haven't done is email Securom for an exe because the game isn't telling me I'm using an emulator or anything. Before anyone asks, yes I am using a disk, not a no-CD crack. Any help would be appreciated. ^_^

In the meantime, I'm going to go to the Securom website and see if I can do anything there.

Edit: Egh, apparently they sent me an e-mail saying it's not their fault basically. Idk what to do....

Double edit: Nevermind, I undid the step which asks me to replace the .exe and it works for some reason.

Let me guess: Intel Mobile Series 4 chipset (X4500 GPU)?

If so, then apparently you're not the first person to get KotOR2 running on one by NOT replacing the .exe. Maybe 7 plays nicer with the older version of SecuROM?

Your input is appreciated. I've been trying to figure this one out for months without the benefit of possessing the hardware in question. This may be the breakthrough I've been looking for.

I can't seem to make this work. I thought I had the best of PC, since all the ini fixes were already done, but it seems like it wasn't. Problem is, when I patch the game, I am asked to insert a disk ( I don't have one, bought my game at direct2drive). Any idea how to fix this?

I get a black screen upon launching the game. (prior to aplying the patch and SEcuROM updates)

Thanks!

Hi! Tis is my first LucasForum post, so yay!

I recently bought KOTOR off of Steam and I managed to play it up until the escape from Taris. I boarded the Ebon Hawk and all I got was a black screen for the next half hour. I restarted my com and tried again. This time I got to just after the Malek cutscene when I got the black screen again. Restarting my com again I tried to get through it but this time it stopped on the loading screen for the turret section.

I tried starting from the beginning again but now it happens right after I board the escape pod.

I'm running Vista (Not sure which version)

(Note: I don't know what other info to add.)

Since D2D is taking too much time to answer my problems, I am once again turning to the pros in here.

here is what my hardware scan tells me. Btw, the graphic card detected is NOT my graphic card. maybe this is my problem?

I have a nvidia GT 130M.

Hey all, I had a concern about the Kotor 2 mods made to restore the cut content. I was wondering if anyone has/is using any of them and could you give a rundown of which one is better and possibly a how-to guide to get it running right. Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Which one is better?

There's only one restoration mod that I'm aware of that's basically complete, though it is still being tweaked. The other is the bug-ridden beta of a mod that was never completed.

Try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2.
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

You can leave out the keymapping.

And please specify which version of Windows you are using because the game can't ID anything newer than XP.

I have Windows Vista with a Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 with the newest drivers (kotor cant seem to reconize it)

I got part 1 working after a bit but I cant get TSL to work properly, the best I've managed so far is succesfully loading after creating a character, however I load immidiately into the Ebon Hawk as my MPC (not T3) while having terrible FPS and freezes. (this is without the securom .exe but otherwise following all the fixes and I tried with but the game would crash before reaching the main menu)

Hi, I see to be having the same problem as most people with these Intel chipsets. I'm running Windows 7 with the Intel HD Graphics card, and my game crashes after character creation. I have unchecked Read-Only from the SWKotOR2 folder, have everything in XP SP2 compatibility mode and as administrator. Also, I did install and reinstall according to the steps in post two. Still no go. Any input would be appreciated.

While looking for a fix that I hadnt tried yet I found mention that Windows 2000 compatibility sometimes works better then XP and this has allowed me to succesfully make a character and complete the prologue without problems, maybe this could help some others too.

Yes, but it seems to automatically happen everytime I start the game.

Interesting. Vista did not used to do this. I haven't used Vista since 7 came out, and that feature could've been included with the improvements that MS made to Vista since then.

1) Try using the original swkotor2.exe from the patch instead of the one updated by SecuROM.

2) If that doesn't work, try contacting SecuROM for a new .exe using the link in post 2.

I've never heard of that approach, but I'll most certainly look into it. Your input is appreciated. :)

Q --

Thank you for your second post on this thread!

Two things.

1. Perhaps this thread title could be amended to include Windows 7 in the title? That was the reason I originally skipped over it.

2. In your second post, it mentions enhanced movies and music for KotOR 2. Where are these? I went to Lucasarts.com (where the official patch is), but didn't find it.

Thanks again.

@Al_Ciao: he meant the site that his links lead to, Here ya go, just look for them under the official release part :D

@Q I gots myself a little problem with Intel as well (Mobile Intel 4 Express Chipset Family) and ive done everything you said and i still cant get passed the 1st movie. Movie, no problem, but after that, black screen, droid (T3 i would guess.) and then crashes. i find it weird tho because i have not one problem with Kotor II on meh Windows 7 desktop, but i do with this windows 7 laptop here... ive coppied the files from my desktop to my laptop before, witch didnt work. I got kotor 1 to work no problem at all after following your post XD mabye a few "Sith Lords" dont like Mr. Bill Gates....

EDIT: ok, now when it crashes i dont even hear T3 beep..... i didnt do anything to it either XD dont know if that will help or not, but yeah....

EDIT2: well, i tried taking a few of the saves from meh desktop (one was in telos, one in Korriban, and other was Trayus Core or w/e its called) to see if the claim that only the begining parts and the endgame was broke, well, my korriban didnt work either. thought that might want to be known XD

Hey everyone! :)

I seem to be having a unique problem... one that I couldn't find anywhere else.

I installed the game and it runs perfectly up until, in Peragus, I loot the body in the morgue with the plasma torch. Kreia then gets up to begin a dialog and, without fail, the game crashes. It runs incredibly smoothly while I am doing anything else, but I cannot get beyond this point. I have quite a few mods installed, don't know if that is relevant or not. I am running Vista 64, and am getting this as the error thing...

GLU32.dll is the faulty module or whatever it is called.

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Thanks!

EDIT: another tidbit of info.... I cannot disable all of the files to read-only. I click properties, deselect read only, press apply, and wait about 15 seconds while it says "changing attributes..." and goes through everything (mostly in streamvoice and override). Upon completion, I press ok at the bottom. However, when I reopen the properties, the "read-only" box remains checked! Then I repeat the same process, and the same thing happens. I am thinking that maybe since these files are read-only (since I can't change them) that that is what's causing my problems. I have tried quite a few work aroudns to this read-only problem, but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

That read-only thing is normal. The property has been removed, even if Windows says that it hasn't.

Please use the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:
