MI5

The other question to ask is: has Monkey Island 5 ever been in production? I reckon the answer is yes, albeit in a very limited way. But there might be some production notes and maybe even some concept art hidden away in the vaults -- who knows?

Oh, I bet MI5 has entered some incredibly marginal level of pre-production, just like I bet the same is true of The Dig 2, Grim Fandango 2, and Maniac Mansion 3. Hell, we even know that some sort of document exists for a Dave and Tim MI3, right?

Even if MI5 were to come out what would be the plot?

Guybrush and Elaine are free pirates, they're not tied down by anything (except for their marraige of course!).

Bill Tiller had a story idea for Monkey Island 4 (before they made Escape):

"It had Elaine as the breadwinner, doing all the great piratey stuff, getting all the money, whilst Guybrush is left at home looking after the kids. He wants to recapture the old days... it was actually, basically, the plot for The Incredibles." (see our interview -- http://www.mixnmojo.com/features/read.php?article=tiller&page=1)

Alternatively they could just restart the series. I personally think that would be the best. Pull some Batman Begins ****. Not to replace the previous games or anything, just to reboot the series. Maybe turn the plot clock back to after Monkey Island 2, and make the series a bit darker. Or a prequel. That business about LeChuck, when he was alive, is pretty intense.

Doesn't that give whoever would be in charge of the story more freedom, if anything? With H.T. Marley doing all the political stuff, Guybrush and Elaine can have a more pirate-y themed adventure on the high seas. Being focused on elements other than those of a conventional pirate story was one of the main criticisms directed at EMI. The plot could be about anything, really.

It could be about something among the lines of LeChuck and Guybrush are dads now and there's some kind of weird pirate-y adventure involving Guybrush's son fancying with LeChuck's daughter and only H.T. Marley knows about their secret. Then they run away and try to hide on Monkey Inland just to find out about the real truth behind the Secret of Monkey Island .

Something elTee propositioned awhile back and something that would work really well is putting Guybrush and LeChuck in a position where they have to reluctantly help each other to achieve a shared goal. LeChuck acting as Ozzie Mandrill's toadie in EMI - aka an aspect Pirates 3 totally ripped off with Cutler Beckett and Davy Jones - was pretty unsatisfying (though thankfully they let LeChuck say enough is enough in the climax), but since that game already introduced that notion of LeChuck requiring someone's assistance to reach his own ends, why not have him enter into an uneasy alliance with Threepwood to face a threat that would affect both of them? The tensions that would mount between Guybrush and LeChuck would be potentially hilarious.
