Will you/have you turn(ed) the lights off on the Earth Hour?

Today, March 28, between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM, you are supposed to turn your lights in the name of the planet. Some places have already returned to the Dark Ages this day. You who live on those places, have you adhered to the movement goals for a single hour?

And you who are still waiting the evening, will you help?

Myself, I'll probably turn everything off and go break in a bank that might have taken it's alarm off.

So what if it's gimmick, it's fun. Pitch black exercising, pitch black showering, pitch black shawing, and pitch black looking-for-things to wear (all the more fun due to a camera in the living room).

Will it save the enviroment? No, but that is not the question you should ask, instead ask.

Will it make for a fun challenge?

I will, when the government does, and when all the politicians do. Until then, not going to happen.

Also, one hour for one night? Whats that going to accomplish? Seriously people need to get off this control-everyone-kick they are on.

No kidding. Besides, I've had enough involuntary blackouts this year to cover the next 15-20 "Earth Hours." :D

Yes. I share the same opinion.

Just who's at home at 9 PM, anyway? :xp:

I have 3 kerosene lanterns at the ready in case of a blackout because they're a common occurrence where I live.
No wicks nor candles? I'd say that here one blackout each 3 months is a must. But they hardly last more than an hour.

Sure, I have candles, but the kerosene lanterns provide far more light. I'm not sure what you mean by "wicks."

In my area blackouts are usually the result of a fallen tree branch or even an entire tree in a storm, so they last several hours.

Why should I bother? Will this actually have any impact? No. Preserving the environment is fine and everything, but this "Green Movement" has nothing to do with that. The theory of Global Warming is just as valid as the theory of Global Cooling, and how well did that work out.

Really, this whole thing gained its momentum when PM Margaret Thatcher of the UK wanted a rational for her plan to build nuclear power plants across Britain (something we should be doing more of). Since then it has evolved (or devolved?) into a secular religion. It has its prophets (Al Gore, a hypocrite who asks others for to change their lifestyle but rather than doing so himself he just sits around and rakes in cash), its "holy books" (The Inconvenient Truth or more properly The Convenient Truth), its demons (the Oil Companies and greedy Republicans), sins (SUVs, long hot showers, and leaving the light on), and penance (cutting back on fuel usage, hybrid cars, etc.). It's roots are in the defeat socialist and communist movements, and is in many ways vengeance against capitalism (ironically it is very much fueled by capitalist devices).

The world has been had IMO. Especially Africa, a continent struggling to modernize but is being forced to use very ineffective "green" technology by the UN and other organizations controlled by the "Green Movement". All the while, more and more individuals with no scientific experience or knowledge merely have to say things in favor of this religion in order to acquire professional degrees and gain solid jobs that they don't deserve. Our auto-companies are struggling to retool in order to compete against Asian companies and yet they are being told they cannot produce the cars that Americans want. It is likely that Obama will soon be pressured into passing legislation that further increase the burden on ordinary Americans while the higher-ups of the "Green Movement" rake in money and any restrictions on the Oil Companies and other "environmental offenders" will either be so insignificant to the point that they will be ignored or will be so poorly written that loop holes will easily be found.

I am not saying that this "Movement" is entirely bad. Fuel efficiency is something we should have had a long time ago. But we have been very much had IMO.

I don't see why all of you have a problem with doing this, I don't think the point of it is so much that it will make a difference on it's own, but that it acknowledges that we need to be more energy efficient, etc.

Because it just seems so stupid. For one hour? If they wanted to have an impact they should do it for longer, and even then... what will it accomplish? We already know we need to be energy efficient, so how is a bunch of people turning off their lights for 60min going to make any difference?

EDIT: I don't care if anybody does this or not, I just think it's stupid. If you want to be so energy efficient get off your lazy ass and buy some energy efficient light bulbs or something.
