Something that would be like http://www.ig-64.com or http://www.[my name].com or something How do I go about actually publishing the website? I'll take what I can get, but I'd rather not have to register with a company and have to pay and renew and all that. If there's any material that would teach me how to publish it myself, that would be cool, as long as it's not hideously complicated (and even then I might be interested). I know HTML, but I am far from an expert. If there's any material that would help me here, or maybe some good software with a GUI, that would be nice too. Thanks. acdcfanbill Posted May 13, 2009 Share Posted May 13, 2009 Find a hosting service, they will generally have plans for space/monthly bandwidth since a shared server is fine for the small time site i think you are talking about. Yearly renewal will most likely be the cheapest option. Then pick your domain, see if it's available, and register it at a domain registrar and point the nameservers towards your host. godaddy.com advertises on tv, i dunno, i use idotz.net for domain registration and mjzhosting.net for my webspace since i kind of knew mjz via him playing jk2/ja a few years back. Each hosting site may be different but most will give you some sort of ftp access and probably access to cpanel. Free web host services often have tons of ads or bandwidth restrictions coming with them. I know HTML, but I am far from an expert. However, after looking into it, my ISP seems to be pretty expensive. I don't expect to have a huge problem with bandwith. I can host all of my images on Photobucket. What are some good free web host services? edit: I think google sites will fit my needs well. The w3schools website is helping a lot. Hope all things going well at the swamp If you dont want to do the full website plunge yet, a good stepping stone towards it could be a blog page using one of the many blog services like wordpress or blogspot. You can incorporate your name into the address like ig64.blogspot.com etc. There are many templates and elements you can load up from blogspot and the web, and whilst composing posts or adding elements, you can jump in and out of html view and start to familiarise youself with html...which is the way many start to learn it - just like we did here with VB. You can of course view any site in html simply via your browser eg. Firefox.. view>page source but any you add specific elements in your own page, its easier to isolate and recognise that code rather than just pullingup full pages blindly Here's the couple I mentioned, which are the most widely used. You can hop into blogger instantly if you already have a google account.
