Jae Onasi Posted August 18, 2009 Share Posted August 18, 2009 A baby---baby dog, that is! We named him Lucas (yes, definitely a Star Wars reference). We got him from a pet shelter. He and 6 other puppies had been rescued after their mother got hit by a car. He's about 3.5-4 months old, and the staff thought he was a shephard mix with perhaps retriever or cattle dog in him. He looks more like a retriever-shephard mix to me than anything else. Our big challenge right now is the housebreaking. Whew, that is not easy to do. However, he's a smart pup so I think he'll pick it up fairly quickly. Joey's only hissed at the puppy twice in 3 days, but otherwise has pretty much just left the dog alone. I can't believe he's been so easy going about the dog. Seriously though, good luck with the housebreaking (maybe the cat can help:p). I hope you and your family have lots of fun and good times with your new pup. He's big enough now to put his paws up on the table and check out the turkey we had a little too close to the edge of the table tonight at dinner, though. My dog was a cross breed between a German Shepherd and a Doberman.... yeah XD two breeds of potentially vicious dogs, but all she wanted to do was play 24/7. he looks delicious... Mav Posted August 18, 2009 Share Posted August 18, 2009 One of my friends just got a German Shepherd puppy recently, named it Tucker, anyway that little **** put a gash in my hand a couple nights ago, it's a good thing I had some Vodka in me and I didn't really feel it. And it's good that your cat has adapted to his presence - as you'll know, Cats are fairly easy going to most changes - my cat soon established the pecking order when I got my dog ten years ago, and there's never been a problem. He might give a swipe or two, but cats and dogs can get on really well in most cases. The biggest problem is introducing a new kitten after having a dog - it almost ended in disaster! Jae Onasi Posted August 18, 2009 Author Share Posted August 18, 2009 @Sabretooth @Lynk--the vet says he's not overweight, even at 15 pounds, but he is a very big cat. @Astor--It depends on the breed of dog, I think. When we were talking to a couple different shelters, they all said that terriers (particularly pit bulls) and other breeds that chase prey like greyhounds and such don't do well when you bring in another animal, especially a smaller one like a kitten. It looks too much like prey to them, and they'll try to chase it at the very least. It's also one of the reasons we decided to go with a puppy instead of a dog. The puppy will accept the cat as 'one of the pack' unlike an older dog. Trust my azn friends to think of my dog as dinner. Well, you wouldn't find him too tasty. Having been a shelter puppy, he's all bone and only a little meat. The people in his foster home fed him well, but he put it all into growing bigger instead of putting meat on his bones.
