My Annual Halloween Movie Thread!

Hey there LF! I actually posted this on another forum, but it bears repeating. The snarkiness isn't intentionally mean to be...well, nevermind. Just, you know, don't take it personally.

I think they're all ****. Maybe when you're 7 years old and scared of the boogie man, and the dark and you haven't been exposed to a **** ton of violence and gore and **** like that, they're great, but as a grown man, when I watch them, they're **** and I don't get the point if they're not scary. The effects are ****, the acting is ****, the plots (yes, even in the good ones) are ****, and at most you might see a stray tit here and there, which begs the question, why not just watch porn instead? I don't ****ing get the fascination.

Horror movies in general. They don't do anything for me. I don't get them. Some of them, stylistically, (cinematography, use of music) are the exceptions, and some I like for nostalgia, but yeah, for the most part I hate them. I can't remember the last one I saw after growing pubes that was in the slightest bit scary, because there hasn't been one, and if the point isn't to scare you, then the point is lost on me because there aren't really any other redeeming qualities.

One of the few truly scary movies I've seen was Jacob's Ladder, and that's not strictly a horror movie. As for recent flicks, [rec] was pretty freaky. I watched Paranormal Activity last night, and was practically laughing the whole way through. That movie sucked profoundly.

And yeah, I'd like people to recommend me some actually scary horror. I love watching gore-movies (Italian stuff mainly), but that's not scary. Show me something that makes me look over my shoulder after I've seen it. And I love the Evil Dead flicks, but other than the first one, there is practically nothing scary about them.

[edit] I realized that it looks like I'm having a dick-measuring contest with CapN. That's not the case though, I just watch horror for entertainment rather than for real scares. I mean, how many people get scared by Hammer-flicks? They still kick ass though.

Pretty much this. I only watch them if they're terrible enough to turn it into an impromptu mystery science theater.

Agreed with these guys, there have been very few movies that have actually made me feel fear, so I rather watch them for the over-the-top gore and general insanity. This is why I loathe movies like The Grudge, because they are entirely dependent on you being frightened by the premise.

Speaking of over-the-top gore, I saw My Bloody Valentine 3D yesterday. It accomplishes generally the same things as Drag Me To Hell, albeit to a slightly lesser extent. The premise is filled with plot holes, and the characters are all forgettable douche bags. But they recognize that this is purely an excuse to have a pick axe shatter your TV and come straight at you.

Unfortunately, the 3D didn't always work. We were either too close, our TV wasn't big enough, or the paper 3D glasses that came with the DVD weren't good enough, but it was often double, or the whites were washed out to green.

A good selection of movies there as always Groovy, including some of my favourites like American Werewolf and Halloween. The Thing, Sleepy Hollow and Severance are good movies as well.

Personally I liked the movie 'The Mist' as well, which had a powerful ending. Strangely enough, that was my favourite Stephen King short story as well.

Supernatural movies tend to send a shiver up my spine, probably because I've seen and heard things myself that I could not explain by rational means.

Anyway, I would recommend movies like The Changeling (not the modern movie, but the old one starring George C. Scott) and The Haunting (1960s original version). Some scenes from those movies have always stuck in my mind.

And for sheer weirdness...Night Watch.

Well, the "dream on"-scene sill haunts me.

On a side note, I watched Zombieland last night. It was a great fun zombie-flick, with decent amounts of gore and Woody Harrelson kicking massive ass. Also, the main characters smoke weed with Bill Murray.

The Changeling has been on my list in the past, but I feel for the majority of our user base here, it just might be past it's time. I have that movie on DVD and it scared the crap out me and my mother when I was a little boy.

I spent Halloween rather ill, and decided to try and watch some old horror films on Netflix, that were not necessarily in my collection for a change. I watched House of Wax with Vincent Price, and god that is a brilliant film! I simply must have that on DVD at some point. It is not scary, but one of the earliest forms of tongue in cheek humor I have ever seen! Brilliant!
