Archie comics now has openly gay character

Recommended Posts

Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead have been going to Riverdale High School for a loooooong time (Archie Comics was founded in 1939). But throughout the gang's illustrious academic career, they have never had a classmate who was openly gay. Until now.

In a move that is generating a lot of buzz on the Web, the publishers of Archie Comics recently announced that they are bringing in an openly gay character, Kevin Keller, starting with the September issue.

None of them have nookie that I know of, so why in the world talk about if they're gay, straight, or into hammerhead sharks? I'm so tired of this 'I need to announce my sexual orientation to the world!!1111!!!eleventy-one11!!11!!!' For heaven's sake, just keep it all in the bedroom and live and let live.

Having gay characters doesn't mean they'll be discussing their sexuality. Archie comics have always dealt with dating and relationships and whatnot, so why not add a new dynamic into it with a gay character? Personally I don't have a problem with it.

I'm so tired of this 'I need to announce my sexual orientation to the world!!1111!!!eleventy-one11!!11!!!' For heaven's sake, just keep it all in the bedroom and live and let live.

According to the linked article, the new gay character doesn't even want to reveal his orientation until pressed to, and even then, when he does it's not in some flamboyant fashion, instead he confides in a friend. So I think your generalization is a bit rash.

I concur :) I believe that such a decision is a private one that is no one else's business but that of your own and your partner. -nods-

I agree with you about the "live and let live" part (personally I don't give a damn about what people chose: sexual orientation is a private choice that does not harm anyone) but did you read the article?

For whatever reason, this act of intestinal fortitude impresses the raven-haired Veronica. She begins to pursue Kevin, who, for obvious reasons, isn't interested. Kevin must find ways to deflect her affection without being mean, but Veronica, used to winning, doesn't give up easily. Hilarity ensues, until Kevin finally confides in Jughead that he is gay.

Like in everyday life, you don't always have to "announce" certain things such as sexual orientation people notice behaviors too (this could also apply to alimentary habits, being a smoker/non-smoker, etc...). Some life habits may be noticed under some circumstances. Some things cannot stay hidden all the time (and I don't see why gays should be bound to hide their preferences).

I don't think that sexual activity (i.e. "getting nookie") is at all that necessary for a gay character, if anything since they are making Kevin an openly gay man then they could just talk about his struggles with getting his parents to accept him and/or his everyday drama dealing with insensitive biggots...unless he is going to be one of those boring problem-free gay guys who has never had any troubles concerning his sexuality.

He'll probably be interesting for the first 30 or so chapters until they've flushed out his backstory - at which point he will be just another face in the crowd and nobody will remember there even was a gay guy in the Archie comics.

Exactly my thoughts.

Seriously guys, gay comic book characters is point of this topic? What is the big whoop about posting this? HE ISN'T REAL. I mean it's not that big of a deal yet some of us here take it to be a huge debate. I'm sick of all this really stupid and over exaggerated sexual related material taken for humor that's being posted recently, or announced. Here people act like it's some big thing going on around the world. Don't go pouncing on me for criticizing this topic because I'm just stating my opinions in this exaggerated topic.

The context looks harmless. Veronica's all ga-ga over the cute new fellow in town. However, cute new fellow just does not swing that way and Veronica can't quite catch a clue.

And, Darth Banana, KOTOR itself had the same kind of explosion over "They put a WHAT into the GFFA?" While the game was fairly clear about Juhani being into women, it was far from a big deal.

As I stated before, just because homosexuality is introduced does not mean it immediately casts a sexual overtone into the medium. Archie comics have always had dating and relationships and introducing a gay character simply adds another dynamic to that. There has never been any explicit mention of sex in the comic and I don't think that will change at all. So your characterization of this announcement as "stupid" and "exaggerated sexual related material" is, like Jae's, a bit rash.

Don't go pouncing on me for criticizing this topic because I'm just stating my opinions in this exaggerated topic.

Well, when you call attention to yourself with aggressive and aggrandizing language, it's hard not to call you out on it.

*scoff* I can say what I want about it, my statements are my opinions, but calling it rash just basically says that you enjoy this stuff, and actually my statement has some truth. There have been a few here recently about exaggerated sexual material, such as "Porn for the Blind" which really isn't what you guys make it up to be

Please point out to me where I said that you cannot express your opinions.

but calling it rash just basically says that you enjoy this stuff,

I called it rash because you assumed that just because the announcement is about a gay character, there are immediate sexual connotations. In fact, in the source article, there is no mention of the word 'sex'. So again, I characterize your statement as rash.

I also fail to see how my calling it rash amounts to me enjoying it. I have said nothing on my enjoyment about anything in this thread.

and actually my statement has some truth.

Which one? You have made a number of statements.

There have been a few here recently about exaggerated sexual material, such as "Porn for the Blind" which really isn't what you guys make it up to be

I fail to see how "Porn for the Blind" is relevant to the topic at hand.

Never, but I did not say that you said I couldn't

... :dozey: Nor did I say the word was mentioned, but the reference is my problem. You guys seem to make a big deal out of a simple fact in a comic series.

I fail to see why you defend this topic then

Which one? You have made a number of statements.

Pretty much all of them, because you guys basically look for certain sites which post this material and bring it here, and really gay comic book characters are nothing to be excited about.

I fail to see how "Porn for the Blind" is relevant to the topic at hand.

Both this and Porn for the Blind are topics with no real point, and yet you guys just try to glorify these kinds of topics.

Who's making a big deal out of anything? The OP simply posted a topic for discussion and people give their opinions on it. I don't see anyone making a big deal out of this.

I fail to see why you defend this topic then

I'm not defending anything, merely offering my own analysis.

Right, so we shouldn't post things for discussion in a general discussion forum. Great reasoning there.

and really gay comic book characters are nothing to be excited about.

I agree. But if you think this way, why do you post things like "Seriously guys, gay comic book characters is point of this topic? What is the big whoop about posting this? HE ISN'T REAL" and "I'm sick of all this really stupid and over exaggerated sexual related material taken for humor that's being posted recently, or announced."?

Sounds to me like you're the one getting excited.

Please explain how 'us guys try to glorify these kinds of topics' because I'm not seeing it.

I'll agree with you there. That really would be to mature for a child's comic book.

Wouldn't that bring out a little to much drama for an Archie comic?

Darth Banana, If that is really how you feel then you have to reason to post in this topic other than to start an arguement. This is a general discussion forum that people have the freedom to post whatever they want in as long as it follows LucasForum rules.

I suppose I was just hoping that this character didn't/doesn't turn out to be the stereotypical or token "gay character", you know just there because they need someone who is gay.

Considering Archie flip flopped between 2 girls and could never make a decision for, like, 50 years its a wonder he's not the gay character :p

He's not gay; he's just a playa.

Um, welcome to Ahto?

Hopefully he will be so quiet about it you wouldn't know he was actually gay unless you read the issue he announces it in.
