Anywho, the dream thing is a valid option. I really hope that's not the case, though. The whole dream concept is such an easy way out; a cheap explaination that leaves people unsatisfied and grumpy. Even a Deus Ex Machina is less annoying.

I should be doing this in the other thread, but my point is, it's the stuff we don't know that keeps something alive after it's "finished".

 

I see a lot of people are quite angry about the ending of Lost but I thought it was perfect. People are trying to get rid of the thing that made them love it in the first place: mystery. If they'd presented all the answers on a platter for us in the final episode, that would've been that, but I've spent hours and hours thinking and theorising since that final episode, and very satisfactorily so. Now THAT'S entertainment that goes beyond the box with the disks in it.

 

Monkey Island does much the same. We wouldn't be nearly as interested if we knew the answer to every question.

Hey Snugglecakes, Lost was awesome and i think the ending could be lost on some of the slower minded people. Same as Inception, I heard a reviewer deducting a star because it became too messy and he didn't know what was goiing on... Why punish a movie because he is a dimwit. I followed it all without problem, and thought it was one of the most well crafted, imaginative films I have seen in a good while.

 

Back to lost and monkey island - I feel they almost sit in the same world. The mysterys of the sland, the atol/dinky which sit of the coast, blowing up the concrete/hatch leading to a series of underground tunnels.

 

More especially in the first couple of series. Another example is when they find those lockers with the fake clothes, beards and props of the 'others', sort of just made me feel like the behind the storage stuff in mi2 tunnels.

Scurvyliver yeah, MI and Lost sit on the same shelf. In fact I've always seen Lost as a sort of magnificent combination of Indy and Monkey Island style themes. Probably the best thing ever made for television, IMO. I'd have to agree that those who don't like Lost are probably rather missing the point, either through ignorance or inability to understand. You need to really pay attention and dedicate several brain cells to the cause, but do that and what a wonderful reward you get. I like that.

 

Now I need to go watch Inception. You guys have me sold.

I kind of agree, but more disagree.

 

Its human nature to want answers, but sometimes the mystery behind the truth is more interesting then the truth itself.

 

I think the best mysteries leave room for interpretation, discussion and to provoke thought.

 

I think one of the main reasons Monkey Island 2's ending was so brilliant, that long after I had finished the game, the story continued in my head. Was it a dream, was it his imagination, was it a LeChuck Curse. We are all still debating this issue to date.

 

A conclusive ending is more evident in Monkey Island one: Boy saves day and gets girl, "oooh fireworks, what a lovely ending..." This by definition is the fairy tale ending. Monkey Island 2, has an end point, but no definitive 'ending'.

 

Sopranos again took this approach. It just cut to black suddenly mid scene. It puts the onus back on the viewer to use their mind.

Exactly.

 

Musiclyinspired: I see what you're saying too, but remember that in, for example Lost, a lot of questions were answered, but there are things that are open to interpretation and I think it takes great talent and thought to create such a story. Yes we do want answers, and we get them too, but stuff like Lost, and Dan Brown's books... they leave you with more than answers. They leave you with something to ponder.

 

From experience, I think that after months or years of thought, I'm often left more satisfied with a MI2 style ending than a MI1 type ending. Same with Lost. It's this room for interpretation in the story that probably entertains us just as much as those 320x200 graphics in the old SCUMM games. Somehow the old graphics have MORE detail than the 1080p remake, because things aren't as obvious. Your brain fills in the gaps, it makes it your own experience as much as that of the people who created it.

 

I've been thinking about the MI2 ending for 19 years, and my take on it not only ticks all the logic boxes but is also better and more satisfying to me than any crystal clear ending LucasArts could've force-fed me. I love that. Also, here we are 2 decades later still talking about it. And it only cost me (edit: I mean my mother) 50 bucks!

 

Scurvyliver: I can't think of anyone on any other forum who's been a member for a decade and yet manages to double their post count in 24 hours!

So I finally finished it............ Yes, I've been busy! :)

 

More minor annoyances:

- You can't use the root beer on LeChuck(!!!) -- unless you switch to classic

- The crowbar turns into an anchor when you combine it with the rope.

- There's no cracker in Guybrush's hand when he hold it up (damned minor! :))

- Herman looks a little too crazy for me.

- The notes on the lift are unreadable (I like how they've changed everything else to making it readable, elsewhere in the game)

- Missing messages when the credits finish (I thought they'd added this back in? :()

 

Damn, those new credits are LOOOOOOOOOOOONG. How many vice presidents of marketing can there be?!

Yes, that first one annoyed me too, not sure how they missed that. As for the second, I believe they're back in the Classic version? Same with the opening credits?

You can use the root beer on LeChuck if you wait until he is picking up the coin in the vending machine room. Everywhere else it's just too hard to do in the small amount of time given.

 

The ending messages are only back in on the classic mode for the Steam version. I don't think any other version of MI2:SE has been patched to include both the opening and ending yet.

I absolutely love the Special Edition as it is. However, if I wanted to be extremely pedantic:

 

-The seamless endings to Largo and Stan's themes are missing, the former replaced with one generic ending and the latter merely fading out when you leave the shop.

-Woodtick and Phatt Islands' main themes always start at the beginning rather than at different points in the track.

-The "waaaah" sounds in Woodtick's main theme are missing, even in classic mode.

-No flute noise when you enter the Voodoo Lady's shack, even though it's in the game's audio files.

-Long delays every time you change screens. Most grating when you resurrect Rapp Scallion.

-Every time Secret-era Guybrush appears, he has a beard.

-The red tint during Guybrush's dream sequence fades out far too late.

-Ville De La Booty's main theme is not only inexplicably muffled, but it's the wrong song, (in the original it was actually a unique song, not just a variation on the party music) and the variations of it that play at the Spitting Contest and the Costume Shop are missing.

-Ville De La Booty's main theme is not replaced by the Booty Island map music on repeat visits (IMO it's better without this, but authenticity!)

-In Ville De La Booty and the Governor's Mansion, the songs tend to switch and suddenly change for no particular reason.

-The music does not gradually slow down to a stop when you volunteer at the Spitting Contest.

-The music at the Booty Island guardhouse is HORRIBLY out of sync.

-Kate Capsize' Flyer looks nothing like her when in the inventory. (But looks fine when on the wharf)

-The Ju Ju bag doesn't say Ju Ju on the side, it says UU UU instead.

-Ralphie and the Booty Boutique owner are both quite blatantly voiced by William Kasten, yet are credited as "Dave Boat". Stage name, or crediting mistake?

-No scrolling when underwater or by the cliff, even though they still talk about scrolling in the commentary.

-No speed up effect on the Phatt Island Casino wheel, when Guybrush changes the flags, or when Guybrush nails Stan in the coffin, again, even though they mention it in the commentary.

-Rapp Scallion's resurrection is extremely choppy, blurry and, of course, out of sync.
