SWG Shutting Down - December 15

This was bound to happen. I didn't see Lucasarts wanting to keep SWG around. It would have been nice if they had made it free-to-play, and had in-game purchases. That probably would have made it reasonably profitable. SWG was a solid game back when it first came out. Oh well. RIP SWG!

As of yet, they do not have JTL. Though it is planned.

Though one of the devs for SWGEMU has stated that

We'd like to get space partially implemented at least before SWG closes down.

Thanks to SOE, you guys are going to be getting JTL before 1.0 release :p

They get JTL working, I'm down. SWTOR might even have a tough time getting me outta my SWGEMU ship...

Emu is a joke

Oh really? Have you tried it? Liberator is working quite well(minus a few quirks). The biggest thing for me was space though. And if they can get that working, I'll be a happy man.

I wouldn't mind if someone made an emulator for even post NGE. Actually, post Mustafar pre-NGE would be good for me. I didn't mind the CU so much. And quite frankly with the Current state of the game, it's actually a lot of fun to play(queue NGE haters). What made Galaxies great before the NGE was all of the players. If the current game had all of the players from pre-NGE it would have been great. If they had figured a way to gradually get people used to the controls of NGE, they might not have lost so many players. Heck if they had just kept one pre-cu server up and running with no fixes or patches while making the NGE the main servers, most of the NGE haters wouldn't likely be so spiteful towards SOE and the NGE.

Dear Star Wars Galaxies™ Community Member,

We write to you today to inform you that on December 15, 2011, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts will end all services (MMO and Trading Card Game) for Star Wars Galaxies (SWG). The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.
We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we've received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.

In recognition of your incredible loyalty, we are extending special Fan Appreciation offers to the current SWG community. We also plan to go out with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December and hope to see you all there. The details relating to these offers and events as well as the timeline and specifics regarding the discontinuation of the service, are provided below.

Again, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our player community for making SWG one of the best online communities in gaming history.

Sincerely,
Sony Online Entertainment & LucasArts

The Fine Details:

Discontinuation of Services:
As of September 15, 2011, the SWG MMO and Trading Card Game will no longer be available for sale or subscription at both retail and all online digital retailers. All billing for active subscribers with accounts in good standing, except for Station Access subscribers, will end on October 15, 2011.

If you are an active subscriber in good standing as of September 15, 2011, then you can play for free for the final months. Players wishing to play through the end of the game and participate in the galaxy-ending event planned for the last week of live service in December will need to re-activate or join the game on or before September 15th. No new or reactivated accounts will be accepted after September 15, 2011.

As of today, June 24, 2011, we are discontinuing the 12, 6, and 3-month subscription plans, meaning these subscription options will no longer be offered for newly created SWG accounts. SWG subscribers who have prepaid six (6) or twelve (12)-month game time plans that extend their subscription period past October 15, 2011 will receive a pro-rated refund for any such pre-paid excess subscription payments*. Such refunds are expected to be issued within 90-days after the game ends.
In addition, we will be discontinuing the sale of all Star Wars Galaxies™ Trading Card Game (TCG) digital card packs as of today, June 24, 2011. Loot cards will not be redeemable in the SWG MMO after September 15, 2011. The TCG will continue to operate until the final service closure on December 15, 2011.

Galaxy-Ending Event – Be Part of this Historic Event

During the last week that SWG is available, we're inviting the community to participate in a galaxy-ending event. We're going to end with a bang and we want the final chapter of the galaxy to be written in part by the dedicated and passionate SWG community. Details will be announced at a later date.

Fan Appreciation Offers

We welcome those active SWG subscribers in good standing to play one or all of the below SOE massively-multiplayer online PC games at a fully-paid subscriber status (or “membership” status where relevant) at no cost between October 15, 2011 and December 31, 2011 (subject to the terms and conditions described below). To activate these special offers, use the same Station Account you use now to subscribe to SWG** and simply click on the game you would like to try to download the game software. We are offering the following SOE games: Free Realms®, Star Wars®: Clone Wars Adventures™, EverQuest®, EverQuest® II and DC Universe™ Online. The game software will all be made available for download on a link accessible from the StarWarsGalaxies.com web site beginning on October 15, 2011.

I've already had one death this year, and now, I'm being informed of another one to come. It doesn't matter that this was, just, a video game. The grieving process will be the same. Although I did not start playing this game until September 20th, 2005, I've continued to play it since then, nonstop. I've made many friends on two main servers Kauri and Chilastra, plus all of you from ModSource. I, sincerely, hoped that this game would run alongside The Old Republic as was their original intention. But alas, that will not be the case. I, hope, you all pick up your old subscriptions and play this until the last day When it is finally gone, you will mourn, mark my words.

I noticed some stories coming up of people trying to keep up Galaxies through lawsuits and petitions, but it looks like neither of those will work.

Since I went to the dark side, sold my PC and got a Mac, I haven't played Galaxies but from what I heard it was picking up again. At least Sony is acknowledging the real reason why Galaxies is being shut down. They could have renewed the licensing if they wanted to, but TOR is coming out so I think its safe to say that Lucasarts didn't want to.

I just checked Steam on a whim and I see SWG's been removed from it. I guess they pulled it from online retailers early. I wonder if it's been pulled from anywhere else.

The official website is all that's left. One month equals four. Get it while it lasts before September 15th. Veterans should use the reinstall function quick download.

Ok so I have something of an extraordinary request. I was too late to get back into the game; seems I and many others didn't receive a 'we're closing' e-mail. I'd really like to say goodbye before it's all gone and of course there's simply no way to resurrect my account now. Since it's going to be closed in a couple months, is there anyone out there who'd let me log into their account? I know I know, all sorts of bad things could happen, but I promise you I am on the up and up, and will do whatever it takes (within reason) to prove to you that my intentions are merely nostalgic. Just an hour of playtime, a little cockpit time, and I'll be content.

SWG could've been improved,i was disappointed by the game in it's entirety. The only things that made it star wars was the planets, the characters, the weapons, the POI's/locations,vehicles, and the professions that was everything i saw that was related to star wars in it. everything else could've and should've been improved. SOE didn't add vehicle combat. I saw how The combat system could've been improved but since SWG is being shutdown. i say "Good Bye SWG let your Memory rest in the future"
