I just figured he was in for the trilogy, but maybe that is my own misconception. So I perceive it as backing away.

Will he be involved in the other two films in any way? George Lucas only directed the first film in the original trilogy IIRC, and those still turned out great. Personally I don't see it as particularly troubling.

I think they've gone for a more realistic approach to the design (in using Ralph McQuarrie's original concept) because it does look evolved but keeps the characteristics that makes it a formidable starfighter.

In real world terms, this is basically the F/A-18 Hornet becoming the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if this was set 10 years after RotJ. Since it's 30, the design should be more different in order to show some sort of evolution.

We don't anything about this new X-Wing beyond what it looks like. It might be an older design, or it might be top of the line. In the (I guess now non-canon) background of the original X-Wing was top of the range when the designers defected to the Alliance, and that was just a few years before Yavin.

Lynk's example of the F-18/Super Hornet is a good one - modern Jet fighter design has changed very little since the late 70s and early 80s, both the original F-18, and the even older F-15 are still in use by the US Air Force.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the inspiration on Ralph's concept art, and since it's fiction, there are probably many explanations for the (lack of) change. I just think this is another example of them not being bold enough and playing too safe with the whole thing. I guess I just don't want a re-hash of what we already got with the previous movies. Hopefully I'm wrong and that won't happen.

I don't know... it looks plenty different to me. It keeps the overall elements that make it a space superiority fighter and escort, but there are clearly A LOT of design changes that tell me this is a more evolved version of the most famous starfighter that helped bring freedom to the galaxy.

I think the fact that we're seeing the X-Wing return in an evolved form rather than a completely new starfighter variant is an acknowledgement of its role in shaping the galaxy during the days of the rebellion.

EDIT: Also, is it me or does it look like the new X-Wing has a single layer s-foil instead of a double layer of the original? Looking at the laser mounts at the ends of the s-foils, it looks like it's actually split down the middle, meaning when the s-foil move into attack position, it'll look like the front s-foil section will move down while the back will move up.

It's slightly different, but not plenty different. For the general audience, it's essentially an X-wing despite the minor cosmetic changes.

Throughout the PT, we see ships and vehicles that are unique but at the same time easily identifiable as the predecessors of what will come later (i.e: Sith Infiltrator and Jedi interceptors will eventually become the TIE fighters, ARC-170 will eventually become the X-wing, etc...). I wish we would get a similar design evolution (and originality) with the ST.

That's correct.

The difference between the PT ear and the OT era is that a fundamental shift occurred which turned a Republic into an Empire. This also changed the entire design aesthetic that the Republic had versus the Empire which was more about dominating those around them. So yes, much of the design changes are justifiably different.

The X-Wing, on the other hand, is a symbol of freedom. You don't change your symbol of freedom to look vastly different from how it looked when it was doing the things that made it that very symbol.
