What was the origin of your username?

Taak Farst

Recommended Posts

Some of us have had the same username since we joined and use it for all of our internet accounts of various kinds. Some of us have had a history of names and have switched a lot. How have you found your names?

My username on all websites but this is MrV1ndictive - there's not really a story behind that, I just thought it sounded cool when I was a preteen, and it stuck...

As for Taak Farst, that was one time I booted up KotOR and started a new game, and that's what the random name generator gave me!

When I was a kid back in Primary School, my friends and I would "play Star Wars" during recess. My friends would always pick to be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker and all the cool characters and they would always try to make me be Artoo or Threepio. I refused, of course.

Instead of being an existing character, I had the imagination to come up with my own character, an X-Wing pilot named Lynk Former.

However, I didn't start off as Lynk Former here on RogueSquadron.net (before the forums were merged into one big forum to create LucasForums), I originally joined as "Corran Horn" because I had just read the X-Wing novels at the time. Not long after, I did change over to the Lynk Former name though and it's the name that has stuck with me on the Internet.

I may have told this story before, but anyway...

igyman is something that stuck from my early teen years and it's basically a nickname for my real name spelled incorrectly on purpose with "man" added to it. The idea was to shorten Iggy The Man, which I thought sounded cool at the time, into a username. Thus "igyman" came to be and it stuck, as I said.

If I don't use this internet alias, then, depending on the place and the username availability, I go by DrIggy, which is kind of self-explanatory and sounds cool too. :D

When I registered this username at the old JK.net website, I was playing the Nintendo 64 pod racing game 'Episode 1 Racer' and posting in that game's forum. The pod racer I used was the solid body design, the 'Neva Kee' version. In the game, Neva Kee's ridiculously long ears stick out of the cockpit like a rabbit and sway from one side to the other as he goes around turns...so to me, the name 'Zoom Rabbit' seemed appropriate.

Years later, Lucasarts bought the Sam and Max game franchise just so I could get my own custom smiley. :max: Yif!

Mine has quite a back story.

I used to be a huge fan of Marilyn Manson (and still am, though not to the same degree). Once when I was writing a Final Fantasy VIII fanfic, I had these three sorceresses, whose names were all Manson references: there was Dita, who was a reference to Dita von Teese, Manson's wife at the time; Nyliram, which is obviously "Marilyn" backwards; and Zerimar, which is "Ramirez" backwards, referring to Manson's bassist, Twiggy Ramirez.

How it became Star Wars related was when I first played Knights of he Old Republic. In homage to the characters I was writing I put two of their names together and named my character Zerimar Nyliram.

I then went on to register user accounts on various Star Wars boards where I called myself Zerimar Nyliram, in homage to my first KOTOR character, which was in homage to my FF8 characters, who were in homage to Marilyn Manson.

It's a domino effect.

Back when I was a 3rd grader, my friend decided to make me play Runescape with him. He helped me make my first account there. At the time I had been obsessed with Kotor, but I did not own it myself, I played it at another friend's house, and my favorite character was Canderous. Being in third grade, my friend and I had no idea how to spell the name at the time so we guessed. I played Runescape using that name for years after, till I began to branch out on the internet and being that was the name I had typed every day, nearly, for years, it just seemed fitting to use elsewhere.

Back in the day I was the biggest Linkin Park fan, so obviously I thought the bass players' nickname 'Phoenix' was the coolest **** ever. Then I stole the idea of replacing the e with a 3 from my best friend, who had a similar Warcraft 3 account at the time.

My username is my actual middle name. No, really; my mom and grandparents are Chinese, and my grandmother made my Chinese name "Ping," so my parents decided to make it my middle name. I also thought it would be kind of funny to go around the internet with the name, too, due to the whole server ping you see when you're doing multiplayer games. :p

My neighbor's landlord is a chubby Chinese dude in his 60's whose nickname is also Ping. You aren't him are you?

Because if you are, it really isn't Happy's fault some homeless guy cut a hole in the storage shed. She is innocent...

Nah, I'm a recently graduated 21-year old (soon to be 22) student struggling to find a job. :p Plus, I live in the middle of nowhere.

My original name was GTA:SWcity.

All I can say was I have varied interests and at that time modding was a new concept and limitations hadn't quite dawned on me. I thought a lightsaber mod for a GTA game would have been awesome. Even if it looked the part, such things translate somewhat poorly. As well, GTA protagonists embody strength and perseverance that I think most players wish they could have IRL.

Also at the time I opened my account here I was going through personal turmoil and doing anything I could to ignore or escape something that was bothering me. I've told some people behind the scenes but I figure since my friend Qui Gon Glenn was open here about similar things that had happened to him, I might as well share for the world to see.

In truth, I was sexually abused as a child and even though my family was caring and I initially went to counseling, etc. etc. etc. the truth is one must deal with these things at one's own pace.

I thought I could just pretend it never happened and it would go away. Nope. When it continued to bother me, I suppressed it, and I ran away from it.

For the longest time I didn't accept it and continued denying it had happened to me. It took until early adulthood to finally face it and come to terms with it. It was early in 2007 when this occurred. It was something more akin to breaking down, and mourning my loss as I should have long before.

In a sense the person I was trying to be had long since changed, or perhaps even died. There was only who I was at that moment. This has taken its toll on me. The most important thing I think I learned was to accept myself. As a result of this and running away from it for so long...I missed out on a lot of social development, and it feels like I have been robbed of years of my life in the same. Time I'll never get back, and development that feels 'too little, too late' now, looking back.

If there's anything I can share for anyone else out there who may be in this or a similar situation: on your own time you must face it. It's inevitable, you *will* have to face it once again. If not now, eventually. Running from your past is pointless, you can't escape yourself.

That's about all I care about for that username. Grand Theft Auto and Star Wars don't exactly go together...It wasn't much of an identity. I'm a different person now.

As to the current username, I am using it in an RP. I changed to it upon the revelation of leaked material from the Revan novel. It was time to get an identity of my own anyways. Initially it was to be the name of my sith warrior of SWTOR but...this has not worked out.

My name has a similar background as Lynk Former's, back in primary school we used to "play Star Wars", too... and we also had our own characters. One droid of mine was R2-X5, so when I signed up at LF years later, I went for that name. It was already taken, though, so I picked R2-X2 instead. :D

Kind of an awful name in retrospective, because it is so close do the obvious R2-D2, but still better than directly taking the name of an existing character, i.e. "Darth Vader" or "Lord Revan". :D:p

My name is Bob. I like dragonflies, but that's irrelevant.

I was in high school when we first got the mighty interwebz on the blazin' 56k modems they had back then. At the time, you had to have a user name to even connect to the internet. So, I just tacked my high school mascot and football jersey number on the end and there you go.

The name just stuck with me since I'm not terribly inventive about these things.

Mine originated back in my not-so-honest hacking/keygen creation days (glory be to hex editors :p) and was a moniker 'given' to me by the irc channel(s) I frequented involving said communities (was originally 'Green Goblin'). Corny and cheesy as it is, "everything" was cooler with a 'Z' added to it back then... ugh. :xp:

Later when I became 'legit' (honest paying customer.. hehe), I capitalized the "CAN" in the name to represent you "CAN do what you set your mind to". After joining NWN/LF groups, I tacked on the .2da since it was the most frequent style of modding I specialized in.

Still a cheesy handle, but I've had it so long now I've grown old and accustomed to it, hehehe. Most every site I've joined, past and present, I have the same username or variant, and am known as such. :D

The 90 is from 1990 the year before I was born, and SK is like a name except it doesn't mean anything, I thought it was kind of like a statement but I honestly was looking for something basic to use more universally. It originally comes from CaptainSkye my first LF username, which comes from a vague fantasy I had at the time about being an important Captain.
