ha! only because there is a sense of purpose and agenda here EW.

If any of you start talking about 'cool nitespots' or a 'wicked pair of pants' you bought at abercrombie, I will unleash hell. :p

Congrats Team! First WU Finished!!

Our next WU is

statistics server has been updated, team stats are now up. You can access them from the system tray icon>Rclick>ststaus>team statistics, or this link directly

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=140370

Ive seen snazzy little sig items you can get that continually update status... does anyone know about them?? It'll save me hassling and getting harassed by former team-mates from other teams :p

Whilst we have been awarded a certificate for 6 WUs, 3 of those seem to be ones EW has carried over :)

I had a few hundred from the other teams but wanted this account/team to start from scratch so we can track what we have achieved. Of course, the few bonus ones from EW didnt hurt at all ;) good stuff EW!

cheers for that ChAiNz ;)

EDIT:

This seems to be a place where you can make and store snazzy sigs.

Having read the quick skinning guide I have to admit, its a bit beyond my mspaint.exe skill level :(

If anyone wants to have a go at converting chainz or negsuns snazzy sigs into a FAH siggy skin, by all means, please do so!

Edit> recently passed the halfway mark for WU2 ;) Go team !

That was one the I downloaded yesterday but since it didn't look like Astro's original I figured I had the wrong one. :xp:

It's too bad that work units can't be broken up across team members for faster completion.

is anyone here running the SMP client ?? Seeing I have a multicore processor, I thought I might give that a go.

* * *

edit:

Also I thought it might be worth giving a specs rundown of what we are using for this here:

AMDx2 6000+ 3.0Ghz

4GB DDR2

Vista Ulti x64

client(s):

5.03 >> this is giving me 50-90% uitilisation of 1 CPU core

6.22 beta SMP >> on its own it this seems to spread across both cores better ?? Does the SMP run quicker... I havent seen enough of it to tell..

>>when I run this together with 5.03, I am getting 100% on both cores reported.

dualclient.jpg

When the WU on 5.03 finishes, I will probably just keep the SMP running in the background. And maybe deploy the 5.03/6.22 on one of the other PCs. I dont think any pc running on 100% for prolonged durations across all cores is a good idea :p

lolz.. I finally got my hands on those CUDA drivers... and gave the gp2 client a whirl..... and BAM! Boy is it fast ;)

anyone with a 8xxx series onwards card is highly recommended to try it. The Visualisation is geek porn but chews up resources like nothin else..(CPU and GPU)

NvCUDAfold.jpg

For those curious, the CPU is fairly idle whilst this client is running without the viz. The F@H site states that the next revisions aim to offload work entirely to the GPU :p

Now to see, what I can do with my CPU concurrently...

OK. Got that SMP console client running alongside the GPU client. Not too hard to setup, the key being to remember to assign a different machine ID to the console client and flagging its shortcut/executable to work on its own folder(which is recommended you create outside the program files folder)

By designating separate machine IDs, the console client can actually deploy nicely on each core on dual core CPU(NOT hyperthreaded though) ie. one client per core. At this stage im a bit chicken to max my CPU out for prolonged periods so will stay with one core console client only(as well as the GPU client)

Ive seen keen chappies on the folding forum and elsewhere with octacore setups running 3 9800GX2 and mapping console and multiple GPU clients to each core... crazy!! Ive also discovered that these people are described as "fold@holics" :p

Im trying to avoid becoming a foldaholic, though am happy to be 'super keen'.

Looking at our stats, after just a few days, we are at least in the top 30% >> ranked 34599 as I type. I'd like to aim for top 5% by the end of the year.... but we need to recruit more peeps for that, especially ones that are happy to donate some GPU points.

If anyone needs a walkthrough on console client setup, let us know, and I'll do one in the tech thread.

Also, I hope someone else posts in this, otherwise its becoming "Astro's folding blog", and you know I hate that stuff :p In an act of stubborn denial, I am also calling this place a 'mini-forum' as social group doesnt really fit what we're doing [/iMO anyway] :p

hehehe I'm just amused you're using the Social Group err.."mini-forum"

Once I get my new pc setup, you can count on me to devote some more cycles ;)

Will probably wind up using both GP and SMP client like you have posted. Godz knows I'll have enough cores to shift around :xp:

I've put some F@H links in my sig as well.. hopefully they'll help to generate some curiosity and/or members.

lolz...Im using because it is for a good cause...not so I can tell peeps how many ollies I did on my skateboard :p

anyway, my 'secondary' htpc has joined the fold. It mainly spends evenings on. Folding tasks are paused when TV recording is done. It was an ebay purchase, and purely because I like the silver shuttle case it is in.

its specs

p4 3.0Ghz

ATI HD3450 256

It currently is working much slower than the 8800GTS. Of course it is a slower card, but Im wondering if the 512MB DDR I have in there is a factor. Will be upgrading that to 2GB soon as I need that for best htpc functionality anyway..

heres the ATI viewer... the numbers it reports for iter/sec are incongruous compared to the clients at FAH stats. Im wondering if it is something that comes up because the viewer being up is hogging limited resources on a single core system with only 512 DDR....

All in all, ATM...its working at twice the speed of one of my x2 6000 cores :p

ATIfolder.jpg

I'd also like to mention this cool monitoring app called FahMon. Super easy to setup, It even lets you monitor across a network (as Im doing with my ATI card here) :) *nb. compare 'time left' on the viewer against the fahmonitor.... but of a difference , yah? :p

*goes to read more about GPU2 for ATI 3xxx*

@tk/chainz, Ive been noticing your numbers spiking up nicely. great work. What specs do you have running atm ?

also, Ive testing to see how my "main" htpc (which is a 24/7 rig) will handle a standard client. TV and video playback seems ok...Im just wanting to do some tests during dual DVBT recording(which it only does intermittently). For the rest of the time of the day, it might as well chug away doin some foldin.

Its specs. Again, stuck with an intel rig because of the super shuttle case/vfd :p

Pentium D Dual core 2.8Ghz

2GB DDR

Intel Integrated GMA 945 Graphics

Have to admit, this rig has been a rock solid, ever busy htpc for nearly 2 years. Shuttle definitely build em to last/work hard!

Right now I just have it running on a spare box. Nothing major, but since nothing else is running on it but a few basic progz, it's doing pretty good.

It has a Gainward Bliss 7800GS "Goes like Hell" 512mb vid card, so it's still not powerful enough to GPU the WU :( (fastest AGP card around though ;) ) hehehe...

specs that matter for this box:

- Pentium 4, 2.8ghz/2.8ghz HT

- 4gb RAM

- XP Pro/32bit with PAE enabled (to access more than 2 gb of ram)

This will change once I get the new PC going though ;)

It currently is working much slower than the 8800GTS. Of course it is a slower card, but Im wondering if the 512MB DDR I have in there is a factor.
On my PC winFAH.exe uses 9,200 KB RAM and my current core (FahCore_7c.exe) uses about 20,100 KB RAM for a grand whopping total of 28.6 MB of RAM usage. Based on that I would be surprised if the RAM was holding your system back but maybe the GPU cores utilize more system RAM than the single CPU cores?

I'm only running my F@H client at nights on my P4 3.6 GHz CPU. Since I live in a desert and it's summer here (electricity rates are higher) I try to avoid unnecessary electrical consumption/heat generation during our typically high 39-45 degrees Celsius days.

Once I decide on a new graphics card then I'll be able to look forward to joining the ranks of the GPU folders.

any and all contribution is appreciated Char :) Interesting to hear its hot where you are... it is freezing here(well 4C is freezing for my mediterranean blood) :p

As Im contemplating my next GPU purchase... I really need to know what the 4870(or X2) folds like... If I look at the time spent folding v gaming, its about a 90%-10% split :p

The fact that any of the next gen cards will face adversity fitting into my smallform is a different story...but Im working on it...some ingenious, non invasive options in the works.

For those that may be curious about GPU folding and heat... Having the GPU fold is not akin to playing crysis etc. I havent heard my fan work extra hard and popping my hand at the back of the dual alot cooler, there is only a *very* mildly warm air being pushed out. If I game for 2 hours non stop, it gets pretty tropical back there. Even after 3+days of NON STOP GPU folding, the mildly warm air has never changed

Im also pleased to report that my main, 'always on' htpc is handling teh standard client well. Its been on for almost 2 days and no one has noticed any problems with tv recording or video playback etc. Ive rigged the shuttle LCD display to tell me temps, and it isnt changing any more than usual. I think I'll just leave that one on forever I reckon :p

The secondary htpc with the ATI card will be getting alot more use during the olympics. I actually ordered 2GB samsung DDR yesterday so vista can do the HD broadcasts without whining. Will see if I can keep the folding GPU client in teh background, though may switch to the console client only

It will be great when chainz dual 8800GTX quaddie rig gets folding... Thats definitely a contender for a 10,000 points a day rig if you do 2 GPU clients and 2 or 3 SMP clients on the CPUs...always good to leave one core spare for playing Zelda roms of course :p

I have F@H on my work desktop since I.T. dictated that we should be leaving our desktops on at night so they can shove god-knows-what onto our machines at their evil whims.

WinXP SP2

Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz, 4Gb DDR2

NVidia Quadro FX 3500, 256Mb

When I'm actually folding "at home", I have the client running-part time on this:

WinXP SP2

Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, 4Gb DDR2

ATi x1600, 512Mb

So GPU utilizations are out of reach for me. :(

just checking our stats... our ranking is currently in the high 17K mark, which places us in the top 13%, which isnt bad for a few days work :p

Of course getting into the top 5%, or the magical top 2000 will be bit more difficult but with chainz rig imminent, and stinger eventually joining us that will nudge us further on.

Ive decided that after my GPU upgrade, Im going to keep the 880GTS as a folding and in a Lan/Leech Party gaming rig..

Really need to get some folding numbers on the 4870(X2). I know what the 280 can do.

One thing I am curious about, if someone was to deploy a vitual machine or vmware etc, would that allow another instance of the folding app per core ? :p Im thinkng not, but would be good to know for sure.

If any of you are running virtual setups for xp,linux etc, let us know :)
