Yeah, my WU's oftentimes won't send/receive immediately but the queue works and it eventually catches up and refreshes tallies. Mine tends to send about 2-3 WU's at any given time. ;)

As far as power consumption, it'll be another month before I can tell. Here in the South East (USA), TVA has raised their rates (economy woes) so the inflated rate won't be indicative of 'just' my folding until I can get a base rate of the new fees and compare with my old bills.

From what I can tell though.. it seems minimal, though I use little extraneous power as-is. Mainly my comp and tv. (Being photosensitive means you don't have alot of use for lighting.. and what little you use is ultra low wattage.. hehehe)

Haven't had any problems with getting new WU's over last night's folding run. But my assignment server was 171.64.65.20 instead of the 171.42.122.74 server, the one I had problems getting new WU's from.

I just happened to invest in a Kill A Watt power meter when I bought my last graphics card. Using that nifty little device I have observed that my system uses around 200-215 W when at idle or running my web browser. When I start my GPU folding client my system's power consumption jumps up to right about 300 W, pretty close to what most of my games run at.

Before I started folding I generally wouldn't have left my PC on at night so I figure 300 W x roughly 8 hours = 2400 Watts.

2400 W/1000 = 2.4 kWH per day directly attributable to folding.

My electric utility makes seasonal adjustments to their rates so my cost for electricity is anywhere from USD$0.097-$0.1024 per kWh May-October. If I round that to USD$0.10 per kWh that puts me at USD$0.24 per day for my folding activities. 24 cents a day or about $7.20 a month to do folding? I think I can deal with that. ;)

Excellent work Charr !! Yes, looks like Astro is going to build a folder only with his 8800GTS once it gets replaced. Wont be as quick as I expected due to some short term expenses, but all on track.

These are the prospective specs for the GPU folder/media archive rig

*AMD 3200 (skt 939) (sitting on shelf)

*2GB DDR1 (sitting on shelf)

*8800 GTS 640MB

*case/psu >> now thats the one thats undecided. There are some skt 939 shuttles that actually can squeeze a 8800GTS in...

*Heck, Im even thinking of seeing if it actually works in my 'spare' HTPC, the Shuttle SG83G5, although it would mean Id need to take a dremel to the case like this commonly applied mod, That part of the case is a bit old and worn so I wouldnt have any huge qualms save for the dust if I was to keep it 'out of the cupboard >>Another option would be to use a flexible pci-e extender and re-orient the card somehere *inside* the case(like the HD tray)

100_0370.jpg

Still, I do have a sneaking suspicion the older SB83G5s mainoard may spit the 8800GTS out. I might give it a go in the next cpl of days and 'see what happens' :p

I still think Im more likely to go looking for any excuse to get another shuttle :D

That would be shuttle no.5, though one lives away from home atm ;)

[/shocked] Lolz...you must never have seen a shuttle! They are far smaller than a microwave and their thermals arent to be sneezed at, given you set things up right or use dual slot card.

The standard size ones are half the size of a loaf of bread(roughly). The gaming ones are just a bit longer, to fit those larger cards into. They are the meanest, leanest and greenest gaming and media pcs on the face of the planet! Not only that, you can tuck em under your arm, take them to Lans, run around the block, throw them at people etc :D

Their propietary monster size heatsinks make them as cool as any other system on air. Of course, if you want that bit extra as far as thermals go, with a bit care you can easily deploy a watercooled or nitro solution in there, depending on how keen and rich you are :D

At the end of the day, These things run high end dual slot cards on 250-400W PSU (which require sometimes >650W) on a standard atx system. Hence, with 50-70% less power consumption, the planet and your wallet will thank you in the long run ;)

small footprint is the way of the future :) Give it 7-10. All our pcs will be the size of 3.5HDD(or smaller) ;) SSD and CnPU technology is going to change what our pcs look like, forever.

Wow, that's actually pretty impressive. I might consider replacing my Dell Monolith for one of those toasters. Especially when the power consumption is that low. Can't wait until they have SSDs at a lower price, as that would dramatically speed my 'puter and decrease power consumption, along with many other things. **has computergasm**

Since Thursday I've been plagued with Project 2665 consistently causing my SMP clients to be shutdown or hung with "Warning: Long 1-4 Interactions" in the log file. I've tried repeatedly to remove the queue.dat and work folder but the server keeps serving them up. There are a half-dozen threads on the FAH forums in the past couple days about this project and its various work units. I've now rolled back to the standard client on both machines until Stanford sorts this out.

@ tk

I was going to get my brother to run the SMP client on his system but when I saw what was required I told him to just use the standard client instead. He doesn't use a password on his Windows account and the SMP client setup instructions specifically state a blank password cannot be used. IMHO too much interference with the OS if this is required.

@PastramiX...dont show that too me!! Im doing my best to ignore that it exists! It looks awesome, but is far too expensive to justify buying it! Ive been looking at it as a successor to my main htpc rig.. It is of course a htpc focused rig, with only one pci-ex1 slot, which is only good for one thing...tv tuner cards :) I have to admit though the 100W PSU is mouth wateringly green for power consumption freaks like moi :p

Thermaltake actually has ann addon touch screen that you can cram into your 5.25 bay, it costs about $340 and slides out like a car dvd screen. STill, it being integrated into the shuttle like that is nice n neat.

@tk there is a query in the open folding thread about F@H about how much KB/MB a standard work packet involves for upload/download. Before I go trawling , Im hoping you may have an idea given your familiarity with the minutiae of what goes on in the background.

yeah, seems my last WU took over 3 hours to send/receive. It finally switched over to 171.64.65.20 and it synced immediately. Still... that's 2 units that was missed because of the time it took between the send/receive.

171.64.65.106 is another server my comp has problems with, but not as bad. Takes about 4+ attempts before it will connect (apx 1 hour). Hope they get this figured out. Missed a total of 3 possible WU/1440pts just in last night's delays.

hmm.. I haven't noticed it yet. Though if I guessed, it would be because it's a .png format rather than .gif? maybe?

I know IE has (or had rather) problems displaying .png transparency.. but that's fixed in newer versions. FireFox/Safari, as far as I know, has always supported .png transparency but it could be wonky code or a VB hiccup. Not sure to be honest :giveup:

If it starts to become a regular happening, I can try to make some more icons with a solid backing if others would rather go that route? Just let me know. :)

EDIT: Pre-emptive strike posted above :lol:

As a pre-emptive strike against transparency failure.. I've created a new set of icons to match the colored stat bar. When aligning them, it 'should' (hopefully) match up to make a complete bar look & feel :)

I have also created a new f@h album to host graphics specifically for the group. The URLs have changed for the images since they were once in my random album folder. This includes BOTH sig 'join' images and the larger Logos!

Please update your sig links to reflect the new location.

(images in this SG have also been updated)

I'll keep the images in my random folder until everyone can get their sigs changed. ;)

Also, to make things easier.. just look at the list below (or above) to use the look you desire. These new links have the corrected location URLs :D

cool stuff chainz. Im way too dazed to sort it out right now... I'll have a closer look tmrw. Looks awesome tho.

Looks like my brain is settling on a case for my folder/media archive/lan traveller

The Thermaltake Lanbox(me likey the one with the handle)

LANbox.jpg

will I get the screen? dunno. Not yet anyway. I wanted to get another shuttle, but one that will fit the 8800GTS are all $500+ here :( However, with a 450W 80rated PSU, I can still use this and rest easy at night :p

Still, gotta get the new GPU first, thats the first step...bleh :xp:

And yes, congrats to tk on his century!! Despite being the original admin to give the teamLFN idea the staff blessing, there were some moments I thought he was going to chuck it in and go and do something silly like look for ET with the SETI@home nerds people...

Im glad you stayed on board tk! Medical science, and your teamLFN brethren salute you! Getting 100 WUs without a GPU client is a super achievement

now, here's a couple of interesting things (for me anyway)

1. Power bill came. Last time I had my bill was pre folding. Apart from having my pc on 24/7 I havent been doing anything noticeably differently that could skew the comparison... what was the difference? This quarters bill was actually $2 less :p Now this of course doesn't mean folding saves you money, just that its impact on your power bill is negligible. excellent news

2. I think Ive found the mainboard Im after: XFX Geforce 8300 m-atx

The onboard 8300 GPU is CUDA enabled on its own. This mainboard supports hybrid SLI, so plonking my 8800GTS on it, Id be able to run 2GPU clients on it =nice!

xfx-8300-main.jpg

all available from a local supplier, which is handy :D

PS- 'sup lexxy! Great to have you back! Im not sure if youve been floating aroudn other areas of LFN but I havent seen you for AGES. Super duper! ;)

Will be interesting to see what your PS3 cell processor can do fold-wise ;)

Heya leXX! Welcome to the brouhaha! :lol:

Updated the transparent images.. forgot to add the black/white options :headbump Any other color schemes you guys (and gal) wants, just let me know. And remember, just about everything is customizable with these things with a little hex editing. I've also color-coded and named the Master photoshop/tiff layers to better understand what elements match what ;)

* c1 = Default Text Color

* c2 = Background Body Color

* c3 = Background Header Color

* c4 = Border Color

* c5 = Override Text Rank Colors

@Astro, dude, that tiny little 'cube' case is awesome. I can picture you with several of those stacked in a misc. corner of your comp room. Better yet, make a coffee table/nightstand with 4 of 'em and a slab of wood :bluidea: F@H Furniture!
