Server Sizing

I wouldn't say that the requirements scale on a per-player basis, other than bandwidth. There have been serveral admins who have posted they are using fairly "low end" systems. I'm running a linux box on an Athlon 900 and my 16 player server hits around 25% cpu utiilization.

I've heard of admins running it with 64mb. Personally, I'd recommend at least 128mb. Of course, that partly depends on the OS you're running. If you're running Windows, I think you'd need more just because of the OS overhead. Linux tends to have a smaller ram footprint.

It seems that there is a lot of experience out there. In order to put all this information together please add also the following information:

CPU-Type: P4, AMD whatever

CPU-Rate: 500MGHZ or something

RAM: how much

Bandwidth: ISDN, Analog , DSL, whatever in units of kb/sec.

Number of Players: e.g. 4 (16)

CPU-Usage: such as 25% on average or something

Operating-System: Linux, W2K, WXP, ....

After I have enough information I will put together a sizing Guide and Post it here.

Thx, Nuke

I forgot: plz add also the gane type. In Duell you will have only two players in parallel. So the CPU consumtion is much lower.

So the list of information should be:

CPU-Type: P4, AMD whatever

CPU-Rate: 500MGHZ or something

RAM: how much

Bandwidth: ISDN, Analog , DSL, whatever in units of kb/sec.

Number of Players: e.g. 4 (16)

CPU-Usage: such as 25% on average or something

Operating-System: Linux, W2K, WXP, ....

Gaming Type: Duel, FFA TeamFFa, whatever

Dak_iSuk: I assume the more RAM the better doesnt fit. JO is mainly CPU bound. So if you use 128 MB it should be enough. However correct me if someone has a different experience.

Did enybody tried to host more then one JO-Server on one machine? Does it work?

I would geuess that you need 64MB per JO game you are hosting +OS overhead.

CPU-Type: AMD Athlon (Tbird)

CPU-Rate: 900mhz

RAM: 896mb PC133 (128k set aside for JK2)

Bandwidth: T1 (75kB/s peak usage for JK2)

Number of Players: 16

CPU-Usage: 25% average

Operating-System: Linux RH 7.2

Gaming Type: CTF Saber Only

I have run a duel server along side the CTF server without any difficulty.

I would say 256 ram is a minimum amount for a Windows server running Jedi Knight and not too much else. I would go with 512 ram if I were running two servers or if I had much more running on the server. Windows likes memory. :)

BTW my server is an Athlon 1.3 ghz with 512 MB of DDR Ram. She runs like a champ but when a new player joins it pauses or freezes for a second. Anyone else? Any sugesstions?

I've noticed that my jk2 servers running on W2K only consume at the most 30-35 mb ram at a time. That's a 14 player FFA server. Just curious if this is par for the course with jk2 on windows, or if there's a way to throw more ram at the jk2ded.exe binary, to make it run faster and support more players. I've already got that process running at high priority, but can't seem to support more than 14-15 players.

Thanks,

Echo

I guess you need only 64MB per jk2 server running + Operating system overhead. It seems that the engine is mainly bound by cpu and bandwidth. There might be also a limit in the software architecture that prevents more then 14 players in parallel?

Danamelessone's Linux 1.04 Saber FFA

Intel Pentium 3 1000Mhz

ASUS CUSL2-C Mobo

256MB Ram

Western Digital ATA 100 HD Connected to Promise Fastrak 100

Optimum OnlineCable Internet Connection

Gentoo Linux

Gametype is FFA with Saber the only weapon and private duels allowed.

Server has slots for 12 players with one private slot for me :)

At peak usage 11/11 players connected I get 25.7% cpu usage and 13.2% memory usage.

Only time the server gets a bit laggy is if someone connects and their ping starts going to pot......

Sounds great! Is it FFA? Whats the bandwidth? Do you use Windows or Linux?
