What Carl said.

bg: Because I've never played Monkey Island. I just come here because, well, I can. ;) But you can see how that causes my complete lack of interest in the forum made for MI discussion ^_~

edit: well, actually, I do have Secret of Monkey Island, just haven't played it yet...

Bgbennyboy: Okay. Why don't you let me decide which aspects of the Harbor I hate? That is the topic at hand... :D

Like Redwing, said, I don't attend the MI game forums because I haven't played the game. I'm more specifically here to interact with other computer gamers from around the world, moreso than to discuss a particular game or two. This broader definition of discussion parameters is precisely why I'm in the off-topic forum.

:dozey: Do you get it? Rambling discussions that stray from topic to topic are called 'off-topic' and have their own forum. This is that forum.

What Red said.

I don't own any of the MI games.

I've played a couple, over a friend's house... but only for a short period of time. I thought it was really cool, but never got around to getting a copy for myself. I've thought about getting them since people seem so devoted to them they must be great!

I go all the "Off-Topic/ Other" forums, even of games I don't own or have never played, or even have any interest in, as a way to get to know all the other folks out there in the wide Lucasforums empire.

But it really makes it hard to talk about the games.

In case anyone hasnt figured it out by now we are moderating the harbour more heavily. This is long overdue, it should result in better discussions and hopefully some new people posting here. The Harbour has had a tendency in the past to keep people away from these forums, at the very least we need to stop that happening.

Yes, I understand that. And I don't even disagree with your reasoning, those are admirable goals... but hopefully I made my views on the use of these tactics clear in the Feedback section.

It is, after all, your board, and you're going to do with it what you wish, but the transition between "Almost no moderation" and "Total moderation' was a bit sudden, and seemed arbitrary, or even mean-spirited.

You could at least have warned everybody that changes were going to be made, using a serious tone... without all the sarcasm.

Just my opinion.

i don't see how restricting the amount of topics at hand will start more people posting here, it just limits their abilities to begin posting. i do, however, agree with the fact that the harbor kind of drives people away what with all the spam, inculding the "hi! i'm new" topics, so i do agree you should moderate here more heavily, except, like edlib said, the major change was very drastic, and actually put me in a *sort of* bad mood, but that's just me.

You don't understand. Although this forum was fairly active, the majority if not all of it was complete trash. By upping the moderation issued, the spam will be destroyed.

Yes, this will cause a large drop in activity. However, this will only be temporary as people will begin to notice that the forum isn't the spam junkyard it once was, and start posting. If intelligent discussion is encouraged instead of "WOT COLOR R U!!?!" then people will find the forums more appealing.

The spam that is now being wiped out had become so bad that the Harbour was literally only really used by a handful of people, doing nothing but posting completely ****e topics. The forum would completely die at the rate it was going - it had to be sorted out.

Now, if spam is completely outlawed on the MI forums, people will spend less time replying to bollocks in the Harbour, and instead contribute to discussions over the rest of the Monkey Island Discussion Forums. In addition to this, those that do want some non-MI discussion can participate in proper discussions in the harbour - not just exchange "WOT PORN STAR R U?!?!" pictures and such.

If you don't like the quality of the topics you see on the forum page, then why don't you come up with something better...and post it?

:dozey:

Swooping in like Superman on angel dust and closing all the threads, then standing on top of the only one left and proclaiming everything in the forum to be garbage isn't moderation, in my handbook. It's something else.

Edlib has the most important point already made--you guys offered nothing in way of guidance to change the nature of what was being posted in the forum. Had you stepped in and posted a few intelligent topics of your own, that in itself would have changed the nature of the Harbor.

You know what? :D I would like to see what you have to offer by way of a better topic. Really! Post something intelligent, and I'll engage in it until the cows go home. Because this thread isn't an off-topic discussion--it's a feedback thread of the type that usually draws hateful posts, which kills the atmosphere of an off-topic discussion forum...which is why we have a separate forum for feedback.

This is the snack house, not the latrine. :max:

Mister, you had better watch that hateful tone of yours. I have every right to say what I have to say on this matter. Go back and read Bgbennyboy's first post, then come back and tell me what in my previous post was not encouraged in this discussion.

To phrase that more succinctly...I decline to shut face. ;)

I must admit, I've been totally lax on my moderation of this place. The reasons for this are:

  • To close spammy topics would be to close all topics here
  • I really can't be arsed dealing with the backlash from stupid people for making the right decision
  • I couldn't really give a crap about this forum anymore
  • All the smarter people seem to have left, or, at least, the intelligent discussion has dried up, so I don't feel compelled to read the topics or deal with them

Yes, I'm an awful moderator, but that's the way it is. I've been here for nearly 3 years now, and it's changed so much that a lot of people don't know who I am, or have forgotten that I can actually be quite funny.

You might as well de-mod me, because I'm leaving on Friday. I've only stayed this long because I felt obliged to as a moderator, but I'm not even moderating properly. I'll stay 'til Friday only to see out my three year anniversary.

Have any of you noticed that now that there are a few "intelligent" threads out there, they are not that popular. I've clarified a few things about temporal physics, but that is it. I mean that maybe spamming is more natural to the level of intelligence that the people here are on. Or maybe it is just so that rarely anybody wants to talk about baryogenesis, neuropsychology, philosophy or stuff like that. All they want is pointless chitchat.

Is it the spammy nature of it? The ridiculously large sig's that some users have? The unnecessary "woe is me!" sympathy-fishing threads? The posts that consist entirely of 1 smiley and a huge 30 line sig? Or something else?

Oh for frigs sake. Fine, the image goes, but the text is staying by thunder! There, i said it. But yeah, apart from that, i agree with everything there. I'm sorry to here that Feral leaving, but he's right, this is a very different forum to what it once was, the only reason I'm not leaving is because i have a hope that we can achieve something here, (what exactly, I don't know, but something). I'll at least keep in touch with Feral over IM, but it won't be the same without him.

Neil, that's retarded. I loved your sig image. If I was scrolling through a post and saw your sig image, I'd know when to stop and read something interesting. And I'm on the slowest of irish dailups, and I don't have any problem with it.

Ha, I see that only the problems that aren't problems at all are being dealt with.

EDIT: Oh, I think the moderators ruin it. Most of them. There are of course, lovely moderators like Neil and SOMETIMES Feral Chicken... :D

Well for one thing, some topics that are considered spam, are only half-spam. Because spam is suppose to be usless things that annoy people. Well some of the spam topics are quite popular by the forum members. Some spam threads are not popular. If you get to threads before they get popular, then you cant say anything against the decision. The forums are for members, and the moderators are there to keep members happy. Yes Mods are members themselves, and if members are happy, it doesnt matter if it is spam. Sometimes moderators have to look at the regular forum member inside them. :) Then they can tell if the thread is worth it or not.

'Nough said.

Out.

I thought the harbour was supposed to be for off-topic rambling stuff? Idle chit chat? Hence the personality tests and other things? Maybe some of you guys need to seriously lighten up. Oh and if we're so bloody immature, then for god sake stop with the fricking changing my custom title? Is that not immature? At least give me something decent. I'm not saying don't mod the harbor, obviously it needs modding for when you've got abusive topics or whatever, I guess I was under the impression that the Harbor was something it wasn't. I was under the impression that the harbor was supposed to be a fun, off-topic place where people came for general chit-chat, not to be denied of fun by a few idiots who seem to think it's fun to bully other people just because some of us like those personality tests or come here for advice or whatever?
