With the re-releases of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, this would be a good time for me to remind users that we also take questions about all of the games in the series (not just X-Wing Alliance) on XWingAlliance.net. The users there tend to be more familiar with the games than the users in this "Classic Gaming" section, so help will be more forthcoming on XWA.net.

Hello, I'm having a quite strange problem, which I have not discovered earlier, maybe because of never having finished the game. I hope somebody can help me solving this problem. Here's what happens: I'm playing X-Wing Collector's Edition currently, the DOS version in German. On a DOS machine. The only thing I had to do so far is applying a slowdown tool on one of the historical missions, where the cruiser never hypers out, maybe some of you know about that problem. I forgot which mission it was. Once slowed down, all was fine. Anyway, everything works fine. Or so I thought. I have battled my way through tours 1 to 4. No problems so far. Now here's the problem: When I reach Tour 5 Mission 2 where tugs have to dock b-wings, this just doesn't happen. Instead of docking the b-wings the tugs head home into their hangar and nothing happens. When you use Alt-R to check the tugs' status all say 'heading home'. There seems to be nothing I can do, even if I finish the mission, shoot down the star destroyer, even after a long time, no new tugs appear to finish the mission. When I use the TopAce pilot on the disc to play that mission in the historical section, the same happens, tugs head home. Seems the topace uses the same script, just has technically clearance for all missions. I checked even YouTube, where found a playthrough of that mission, it is the DOS version, but it is the English one. There, shortly after the mission starts the tugs dock and everything is fine. The player there doesn't use Alt-R in the video, but I bet there you get 'proceeding with mission', at least anything but 'heading home'. They dock, all hyper out in the end, mission complete. I could post more details about my system here, but I don't think my PC is the problem, I tested the mission with different speeds, didn't change anything. I have plenty of memory available, I don't think it is a memory problem. I think it is rather a broken script file for that mission. Maybe if I will have time I will check behavior with less memory, but currently I am too annoyed to do so. Luckily I got an XMS eater. Checked the web, but didn't find anything related. If there was a patch for my budget release it is not available anymore, as even the publisher is no more. There are no patches on LucasArts' helpdesk for the CD-Rom release. I identified that file on the CD. If I could find the mission files from the English disc, which works fine on YouTube, I could exchange these files on my disc and probably after 20 years finish the game. But I do not own the English disc, and I do not want to buy one just for one mission. After all, I already own the game. Would be the simplest solution to the problem, if somebody is willing to help me out with this. Maybe somebody here had the same problem as me, knows how to solve it differently. If so, I appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance!

Right after some long winded trial and error and forum searching i appear to have this working properly, so i thought id compile what i found here to make it abit easier for you guys. Right here goes. First install X-Wing and if you like TIE-Fighter Next install this patch http://www.lucasfiles.com/index.php?s=&action=file&id=653 it covers both x-wing and tie-fighter i believe. (i found this fixed a problem where the game would crash while trying the start the tutorial missions) Download this file to correct the colour issues and black spots this game can suffer http://www.jkhub.net/project/get.php?id=1804 either extract it to or drag it from desktop after extraction to the directory where your XWING95 application file is. Now i have changed the compatibily of my game to xp sp3, run in 256 colours, run in 640 x 480 resolution, and Disable visual themes. To do this go to your start bar, find lucasarts in the programs, got to the x-wing folder then right click the x-wing icon this will then bring up a menu just click on the compatibility tab and change the setting i mentioned before, apply and onto the final stage. (read this bit through first before trying it as to save any panicing) In windows 7 this is quite simple, CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and get task manager up, go to processes and find explorer.EXE then end process, this will make your desktop dissapear. On task manager still go to file and click new task, then browse your way to program files in c:\ then the lucasarts file and x-wing, open up the xwing95 file and tell task manager to run it, you will then be able to start the game. Once your done and exit the game go to the file, new task, on task manger and just type in explorer then click ok and it will bring up your desktop again. You only need repeat the task manager part to get back in the game again. For older version of windows as im not sure how much it differs when using task manger i'll quote this post: "Originally Posted by Wildstar A workaround has been posted elsewhere: Start Task Manager, kill the explorer process, then do a File>Run and enter the path of the game's executable. When you're done and want your desktop back, go back to Task Manager and do a File>Run>explorer The workaround works because the old games do not know how to make the new Win7 API call to hide the Taskbar, which appears to be the cause of the color problem." Please bear in mind i have only used this with x-wing i havnt tried TIE-Fighter so i dont know as of yet if there are some still existing issues, i will post if it does work though hope this helps guys, happy gaming

Hi, I am eager to play good old TIE-FIGHTER again (I remember playing the floppy install version back in 1995/96) and have some questions: 1) Are there any actual LucasArts releases of the collector editions available (in the UK)? Or better have a look on ebay? 2) Are there any problems running TIE-FIGHTER and/or X-Wing on Vista and/or W7? What did you do to get the games run? I have a 64bit AMD CPU and an ATI HD4890 gpu. Thanks in advance... and may the force be with you!
