In American slang, a duff is a bum. And a bum is a transient.

This computerized hypercultural transliteration has been brought to you by the makers of Zoom Rabbit, the fastest podracer to blaze Beggar's Canyon in the Boonta Classic. wink.gif

Duff = broken,nogood,useless etc..

Never heard of a bum being called duff ! besides they probably call them something stupid now like disadvantaged home person.

Ha and yet Websters dictionary calls duff a pudding boiled in cloth. Never heard of that one either,

To me, duff sounds like it could describe the kind of pointless banter one experiences posted here on occasion...

Actually, Stealth I think Imladil's extemely-out-there style once again carried any pertinent info which also happens to be in his posts along with the rest of his usual content...

In American slang, BOTH <font color="000000">"duff"</font> AND <font color="000000">"bum"</font> are actually subs for one's backside. PBsmile1a.gif

Some examples might include:

&nbsp&nbsp "To sit on one's duff"

&nbsp&nbsp When Lara Croft (of <u>Tomb Raider</u> fame) says "...You'd best not be lookin' at me bum!!!" biggrin.gif

Er, actually....the above usage of "bum" is derived from British slang, NOT American. My bad. smile.gif

...And the post does make more sense when you bear in mind that I was responding to a British unit...to whom "bum" would mean "duff."

I have , now that you mention heard duff used in a negative sense ie... "it's duffed up" (referring to a broken object)
