techies: Linux video server ideas?

Hi there, I've been looking into getting something along the lines of a PVR, then maybe a tivo, now i have decided i really need something more flexible, so i'm thinking of making a media server PC to sit under my tv.

Has anyone got any experience or ideas with this sort of thing?

I had thought of using a shuttle cube system with XP and ShowShifter to function as a PVR, dvd player, media, video and mp3 server. (wireless of course).

However I have noticed that a lot of the standalone systems (like tivo, sony cocoon, etc..) use linux.

I haven't messed with linux for about 9 years, so i know nothing about it. Does anyone know how it would work in this context? Is there any PVR software that would be compatible with it? How does it work with graphics card and dvdr burner hardware?

Also, will it easily and seemlessly network up to my windows machine in the bedroom?

It'd be nice to save on buying another copy of windows.

Any ideas, experience, suggestions, articles or gadgets would be highly appreciated.
