random crashes when video sequence is about to play

I have about a 50/50 chance grim fandango will crash when it's about to play a video sequence. Anything I can do? I tried changing the compatibillity settings to the few game exes to windows 95 mode, change my color depth to 16 bit, anything else I can do? a64 3200+, xp sp2+all patches, creative sound card, nvidia video card, any help or tips would be appreciated.
