Air Juggernaut Posted September 18, 2001 Share Posted September 18, 2001 Today, reading the Osprey/Military book T-34/85 Medium Tank I found this on the "T-34/85 against King Tiger" section: a tank commander called Oskin do a comment about when his thank meet an encounter against King Tigers in Poland (his tank was hidden in a crop field). The text indicate that Oskin open fire against a King Tiger at 200 meters and in the turret side, but although the shot enter and kill part of the crew the tank was not destroyed, so he order to the loader to put a special ammo and order the gunner to shot at the rear tank fuel (1), after it other King Tiger move it turret in order to find the enemy and the Oskin´s tank put three shots in the front of turret (2) without damaging it. Conclusions: 1) King Tigers don´t has rear fuel tanks and Oskin remember that it was like a Panther but more big, the only german tank with rear fuel tanks is the MAUS 2) The front of the turret of the King Tiger is very narrow to allow a gunner put three shots here, but the MAUS has a very big front turret. Nute Gunray Posted September 18, 2001 Share Posted September 18, 2001 Two things are possible: 1) heavy storytelling on the part of the Russian tanker. Making up glorious stories or forgetting details for the sake of the story are common in war 2) the King Tiger was heavily modified in the field, which I assume could have been very possible. I've read of tank crews tying down pieces of iron plate (from other destroyed tanks or even the door off of a wood burning stove) to the turrets and so forth in order to gain a bit of extra armor. If they had armored the turret in such a manner, it's possible the gunner did hit the King Tiger three times and have it survive. The rear fuel tank may have been a similar modification. Or it simply may not have been a fuel tank at all. It could have just been some kind of tank-like object the Panzer was carrying for some reason (just like Russian tanks carrying captured bathtubs for some reason).
