Grim Fandango Help

I'm stuck in the Petrified Forest. I have the sign, I place it down, I go thru the cave it tells me.

 

Now, I've read that it eventually points to a hidden clearing, but I have yet to find this. I've been running around doing nothing.

 

I'm starting to think that this has to be one of the stupidest puzzles I've ever seen in an adventure game.

 

Please, I need help.

The caves are just a distraction, place the sign down, and take note of where it points. Then pick it up, walk a couple of steps in that direction and place it down again. Eventually, it will open an underground p***age.
