Specific Laptop Display/Resolution problem. TSL

Hello all! I'm nearing the point of giving up on playing this game on my laptop, but someone suggested that I post my problem here, so here I am.

I have a brand new laptop:

1680x1050 @ 58 Hz Refresh Rate

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 256 mb driver version 97.92

160 GB HD @ 5400 RPM

2 GB of Ram

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 2.00 GHz

The problem lies with the display, I'm not sure if it's the resolution or the refresh rate, but pressing "Game" on the launcher immediately crashes and prompts me to submit an error report. I can plug my old CRT 1024x768 monitor into my laptop's VGA output and KotOR works fine. I've attempted using UniWS available from widescreengamingforum.com with a limited degree of success.

After using the tweak provided by UniWS, I can get my laptop to run the game, but I first have to "trick" it to getting past the launcher. Even with UniWS, the game automatically crashes after pressing "Game" on the launcher; however, I can plug in my CRT monitor, run the game with the widescreen resolution on my old monitor and switch my primary display back to my laptop and run the game fine--- albeit at a 60 Hz refresh rate (setting the game to 58 or 59 Hz in the .ini causes it to crash at launcher like usual). Since, from what I understand, running a higher refresh rate than your display supports risks damaging your display, I'm not going to play the game under this condition. Even with UniWS, I can't run the patched version of the game because UniWS only supports the unpatched version of KoTOR2.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance. :)
