Any way to fix Tanis/droid quest? [update: fixed]

Some of you may remember there's a quest in K1 on Tatooine where a hunter named Tanis is put in a trap by his wife for cheating on her. He's surrounded by droids and you need to deactivate the droids or they explode.

 

On of the conversation options it something along the lines of "I will help, but you must do something in return". You can then ask him to stop hunting with droids (a persuade is required for success). Helping him out should then result in him fulfilling his promise and lightside points.

 

I've tried this conversation option and the persuade is successful, he even acknowledges the fact that I asked him to stop hunting if I talk to him again before fixing the droids. Something like "If you want me to stop hunting, you better hurry up". However, upon fixing the droids, he said "thanks for saving me, even though you never asked for anything in return", he doesn't stop hunting and I don't get the lightside points.

 

This is really bugging me. I remember this quest being problematic in the past, but the solution was always to make sure you asked for the reward before fixing any droids; I've done that but it doesn't seem to work.

 

Is there any way to fix this, e.g. via a savegame edit or perhaps someone made a fixed script?

Nevermind, figured it out by editing the dialog file. It looks like if you're female, you could never get either of the extra rewards.

 

Here's the issue. There are three possible outcomes when you save Tanis:

1. You asked him for credits, he gives you credits

2. You asked him to stop hunting, he stops hunting

3. You asked him for nothing, he gives you credits anyway.

 

A script controls the appearance of the first two responses; there is no script on the third response.

 

It seems that Kotor evaluates whether or not a response should be shown based on the order they appear in the dialog file. For males, the responses are in the order shown above, so you only get the 3rd response if the scripts for the first two return negative.

 

However, for females, Tanis has a special line first and then you get those three responses. Under the special female response, the reward responses are in the wrong order, option 3 is first. Since there's no script controlling whether response 3 appears - it will always appears for females since it's first, thus locking you out from the other options.

 

I fixed by simply re-ordering the options, so that response 3 is now at the bottom as it is for males. Now I get the correct response.

 

I can upload the corrected response file somewhere if someone wants me to.

 

BTW was there ever any effort to do an official KOTOR patch? This quest on the Juhani/Xor stuff strike me as two of the more obvious broken quests in the game.

Well it looks like the old bug I remember about this happening if you fix the droids before talking to Tanis is a result of the same kind of issue. There's a separate dialog path for fixing the droids first, and the responses are similarly in the wrong order, so that can be fixed by simply moving the responses too.
