Theres always a direct solution to aquiring items that seem like they would normally cost money. (Well, I guess in LCR you have to earn money, but that's only one time.) (I wouldn't realistically count CMI because the whole boat interlude is to get the map. Gaining money helps, but is not the solution to the puzzle at hand.)
