My game locks after picking up an inventory item

Hi all,

 

I just installed GF on my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop. I installed the patch as well. I'm operating now from my hd, not from the CDs. The game starts perfectly and seems to operate normally until, in the very first scene after intro, Manny picks up an object. Then the game just freezes--no error messages. I can't make Manny move or do anything at all after that. Any suggestions?

Never mind! I got it to run in compatibility mode and all is well!
