Arrrr! How can I combine items (contains spoilers)

In Lucre Island [tm] I have to combine woodshavings with my home made cologne, to let Dave identify the smell... is there a key for it? Arrrr!

in the inventory window/screen highlight an object and push the USE key, select the next object and hit the USE key again.
