Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs Questions (SPOILER ALERT!)

Have any of you played AMNESIA: A MACHINE FOR PIGS all the way through? If so, I have some questions for you, tagged and hidden for the unwary:

 

Question 1:

Were the Manpigs/pig monsters real, or hallucinations from Mandus because he's experiencing a fever? In the end, he says that he "heard the Manpigs singing to one another," as all the lights in the machine were going out. However, if they were hallucinations, the Manpigs shouldn't have been able to kill Mandus at all. They should have just disappeared into thin air.

If Mandus is also experiencing schizophrenia at this time, as well as a fever, is that why the machine keeps talking to him? He talks about "when my children died - is that when my soul split?" That sounds awfully schizoid to me. Also, maybe that's how Mandus' psyche copes with the horror of what he's done: one part is Mandus the saboteur and redeemer, and the other part is the machine that wants to keep on running and slaughtering...pigs.

What in perdition happened in Mexico? I gather that was where he caught the fever that plagues him during the game, and he visited a lot of Aztec temples - hence all the talk about averting the apocalypse through sacrifice. However, I think it takes a lot of time to go from "whoa, those Aztecs were messed up, but they might have had a point" to "PIGS ALL!" How did Mandus get from Point A to Z in such a short amount of time? I ask again: What in H-E-double-hockey-sticks happened?! Also, did Mandus sacrifice his children in Mexico, or inside the machine? Are they floating in the two tanks that lie at the very center of the machine's heart?

What was all that talk about "stone eggs", "the egg of the world," and such like? *scratches head* I sense it's important, but why? I have the same question about the "clockwork soul" and "clockwork spine" references.
