brief
First, a few quick questions: [*]When did this problem start occuring (Did you install anything just prior to getting this message)? [*]Is this on a new machine, or your old one? [*]At what point during the startup sequence does this error message occur? [/list=a] Your friend could be right--it might have something to do with your motherboard. "Plug-and-Play" is, in simple terms, something in your motherboard that checks to see what kind of hardware is connected to it. When you turn on the computer, the motherboard checks all of its ports to see what's connected, and each individual hardware sends a little bit of information back to the motherboard to help it identify the hardware. The motherboard then keeps track of what hardware it already has, and what's new since the last shutdown. Windows, in turn, takes this information from the motherboard, and looks through its database for drivers that will make the hardware work with Windows (they started doing this with Windows 95--hence when it came out there was all this hoopla about it being "Plug-and-Play"). There are some hardware that aren't Plug-and-Play compatible. Which basically means that they don't send any useful information to the motherboard. You should still be able to install drivers for them and make them work, but they're a bit more difficult to set up. ------------------ "Oh, Bob speak Thai. Guest grannen
Plug and Play (PnP) is a program that detects new Hardware i.e. new boards you physically insert in your PC. (You Plug them in and can start Playing!) You listed new Software that you have downloaded and that is not the same as PnP searching for the installation to have them working. The responce "No plug and Play system detected" is quite correct, you downloaded software, you didn't install any new hardware. When you download a software you also have to install it! I guess that you only dowloaded it without continuing to answer the questions if you want to open or run the program. Try do download one of them again, answer the question that you want to override the old download and read carefully the questions that will be asked. Answer Yes that you want it installed! I think that is where you missed the complete installation. ------------------ and Grannen [This message has been edited by Grannen (edited July 06, 2001).]

Guest grannen
NO!!! I don't think you don't have to install a new hardware! Do you have a Sound card or what sort of sound have you received until now? Has it been from the tiny loudspeaker in your PC or do you have some external speakers connected from an output on your PC? ------------------ and Grannen
Guest Brighteyesmonkey
Ah I think you've hit it there! I don't have a sound card. I think I was told it's all in one or something? My speakers are attached by wires. external then. ------------------ The names Monkey....Brighteyesmonkey Member of the F.A.O.F
brief
Let's put it this way: Was there sound when you were playing EMI? Could you actually hear Guybrush's voice while he was speaking? Also, please answer my questions in my first reply. ------------------ "Have I got a long way to run?" --Collective Soul, Run

InfinitySquared
Do you have a sound chip built into your motherboard? Like the one of the KT133. I recommend downloading the newest drivers once you find out what your soundcard is. How might I do that you ask? Well click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Sound. I'm leaning towards the idea that you have a soundcard. There is no possible way to get sound in games, besides your computer's built in speaker, but that isn't a valid sound card, and games wouldn't let you use that. If getting new drivers doesn't solve your problem. Try removing your sound card from the Device Manager. Make sure you have your Windows CD and any disks that came with your computer handy first. You might want to ask a techy friend to help you incase something screws up. Not likely, but it could happen. I wouldn't want to be the cause of more problems. I can't believe that your sound card would be Non Plug-and-Play, since I had a Sound Blaster 16 and it had PnP capabilities. Very strange indeed. Guest grannen
To reinstall Windows is no big problem. None of the other programs are affected or removed so it is quite safe to make a reinstallation in order to have your Windows up-to-date. ------------------ and Grannen
InfinitySquared
But make sure to find disks for every single piece of hardware in your computer. Nothing is worse then having to search for hours for the right disk (I know from experience).
