brief
With cable, you have to share your bandwidth with the people in your neighborhood, so while the theoretical download speed is high, the actual download speed varies, depending on how many people in your neighborhood is also using cable, and if you're downloading stuff at the same time. In populated areas, a cable connection can get so bad that a 14.4 modem can download faster than cable. Since DSL is not available in my area, guess what "high speed" connection everyone else is getting? Did you notice that it says "cable speeds can vary significantly"? The test results you got might not be very accurate... Here are some other sites that also do bandwidth testing: http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/ http://go.msn.com/A5/D/2.asp?target=http://cgi.zdnet.com/slink?68655 Also, I don't know about your area, but in my area, cable is offered in varying packages.. To get speeds that are supposed to be comparable to a T1 (1.5 megabits per second), I'd have to pay an arm and a leg monthly ($325 for 1.2Mbps, $485 for 2Mbps). If I pay $40 bucks a month (twice what I'm paying now, and the same as DSL if it were available), I can only get the basic package... which is only 256Kbps. Whereas for DSL, if it were available, would also be $40 a month, and the downstream speed is already 1.5Mbps. It's okay... I suppose I'll just wait for Powerline technology, which I've been waiting for about a year and a half for, to become a viable option (10Mbps, here we come ). ------------------ "Why did you disconnect the brakes on my car? Guest The Feral Chicken
My test just said: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! Your modem is CRAP! You puny insignificant WRETCH! It couldn't get enough power to even tackle a Warrington Wolves player! BWAHAHAHAHA!" Or maybe it didn't. Then you're much luckier than most people I know who use cable. How much are you (or your parents) paying per month for your cable connection? BTW, a T1 connection is 1.5Mbps, which is actually a bit faster than 1500Kbps. ------------------ "And remember, wherever you go... there you are."
