Puzzle #4

Recommended Posts

You are a cook at a campground. You are given a large stewpot, a paving stone, four wooden poles, and four flat peices of iron. You light the fire in the center of the stone, and fit the poles into the holes at the each corner of the stone. But the poles are too far from the center to supportthe pot, and they can't be moved in or they'll burn. The four peices of iron are not quite long enough to reach from one pole to the next, and they certainly won't reach diagonally across the middle! How can you support the pot over the fire?

Teh stone is the square, the O's are the poles, the x's are space on the stone, the S's are the fire, and the ==='s are the irons.

1. Using some force, push the irons about 1/2 inch into the poles to have them stand diognally up as shown in the figure. Then have the pot rest between them. Looks like it would work, as long as the poles hold :D.
