BAD BAD BAD network performace

i'm not sure what happened in the transition from AoK to SWGB, but the network performance in SWGB sucks in comparision. i've never had any problems with AoK, but in SWGB the game gets really choppy, and dies very often; even with a lower population limit and less players than an AoK map. i typically play with one other human and a bunch of computers. we both have cable connections & fast PCs, as i said in another post. so whatever you guys did to 'make network performance better', un-do it and bring back the pure AoK performance.

also, the fact that nova & the green player are the same color on the mini-map is jarring.

That is due to the fact that every civ now has its own unique set of graphics (including units, which used to be the same with all the civs), so unless you want the Trade Federation's troopers to be humans, it isn't too wise to ask them to change it all back.

if a fast computer and a cable connection is insufficent to be free of network latency, what 'are' the requirements for a smooth game? I mean come on - this is ridiculous. I've had the same issues as AirJim, and unless you're running another chat program, such as ICQ, you can't even see each other to figure out what's going on. AOE and AOK had their issues with network problems, but I've never experienced the magnitude and frequency of problems I have encountered with SWGB. My suggestion - fix the fricking game!!!

I don't know if this is related but on my computer 1gh P4, TNT2 32 bit vid card with graphics turned to high and screen res at 1024x860. When I go heavy air like more then 40 planes it chugs a lot even in skirmish I can have 200 troopers and it runs fine but 40 planes cause it to chug maybe it's just my computer but if it's not and a guy built a huge air force and it chugs in SP it could slow to crawl in MP. though i dought it's related.

I have an 800 MHZ Pentium III processor and ADSL modem, and I never had any problems with lag whatsoever. If planes cause lag, then avoid using them, it's that simple.

Heh, and if Workers were to cause lag should he avoid using them too? :) Seriously though, aircraft shouldn't cause any problems... Unless there's something odd going on with your video card then I can't thing of any reasons why you'd be having problems. But still, try lower graphics settings and see what happens.

Airjim, I wonder if the problem is related to your use of so many computer players? The ai for SW:GB does have some problems with repetitive looping, particularly with Jedi trying to pick up holocrons and put them in the temple. This occurs even in single player with one computer opponent. I can see how a network game with 2 humans and 6 computer opponents would be episodically slow.

AoC did not have the same problem with Monks and relics.

Another way I have found to increase performance is to turn off the music altogether. This seems to stop the occasional pause in the games. Another option is to reduce the graphics detail but then the game doen't look as good and then you start questioning what's the point.
