I need help here from the aces. How do you disable the hover train?

Use you Ion cannon. This is a secondary weapon on the X-Wing, so don't use your lasers. You should have a secondary weapon button on your joystick, or use the keyboard. You can also check the Settings of your player profile to see what functions are mapped to which buttons.

don't disable it completely right away, kill all the imperials you can find before disabling the last car.

the first thing you should do to dlow it down is disable all the weapons on the train, and then disable the front of it, as that will slow it down enough for you to destroy all the enemies, i think you need to destroy 108. well, go here http://rogue.nintendo.com there's a strategy there to help you past it i think, well it does show the requirements for the gold medal.

First, practice using the ion cannons to slow down and stop the train. When you have that one under control, below is how I got gold on this level. I posted it a few weeks ago in answer to a question, but unfortunately the question was about the Prissons of Kessel NOT Rescue on Kessel! Glad it may finally help

 

First, when you start head straight and to the left a little. Knock out the base, chicken, 3 transports, and missle launcher. Continue through the ravine and pick up another missile launcher. Next you'll see the prison--hang right and start taking out the lasers, missiles, etc. Past there you'll find around 3 chickens, a building, and 2-3 oil towers (whatever they are). Now head for the train and wail away with ion cannons.

You'll probably have to run through this route several times before you'll have enough time to stop the train. But, this is the only way I've been able to do it. Taking out the transports is the only way you'll have enough kills for gold.

 

You could try the Y-wing and bomb everything. The shield strength saves time from not blowing up as much. If you do this, be sure you know how to fire the ion cannons with the Y-wing (its not the secondary fire). I think its the special function button.

 

oh yeah, you might want to ion all the train except one car. This slows it down and allows you time to retrace the path of the train and take out any enemies you missed. Head back and finish the job.

You can't use the Y-Wing on Rescue on Kessel until you have all golds. (or use an editor) Too bad, though.
