Is the river flowing away from the mountains, or is the ocean pulling it?

Neither, God makes the river flow.

God doesn't exist, why can't you white folk get that straight? God is a fictional character created long ago by parents to scare their kids into doing the right thing.

I believe the river is flowing away from the moutains, something to do with gravity,I think.

I'm with the gravity side.

Though! The OCEAN, being the larger body of water, could have a strong "magnetic" effect. think baout it. take a damp sponge, and let it soke up the SAME AMOUNT water. now, take a dry sponge at let thet soak up water. the damp spounge will get MORE WATER!

Ah, zen...

I like Lujayne's answer. Those of us here in the west choose to anthropomorphize God, thus making Him a concept we can deal with...and in that context, true.*

Does that help, Grand Ice? wink.gif Zen is designed for people who can't take the left-handed approach to understanding the great mystery. Rather than trying to force the idea of a being called 'God' down one's throat, we go find out firsthand.

The river koan is a take on one of my perennial favorites--'Is the flag moving, or is the wind?'

My answer? Well, traditional zen seeks an answer that lies beyond words, so any answer expressed in words is insufficient. Taking that into consideration, my response is, 'It is simply in the water's nature to seek the ocean.'

That's just me, though. I'm interested in what others come up with. smile.gif

I attacked no one, although the X-wing is still better

The X-Wing is best in Dogfights, while the A-Wing is best for hit and run.

The b-wing can deliver a more massive weapons load though.

i like the God answer too. If he didn't create earth, there wouldn't be any river.

Here's another answer:

The river is flowing away from the mountains because the ocean is pulling it.

oh, and ICE, dd you ever read a chapter out of the Bible?

The Bible was written by drunks who needed money to buy their beer. Though i do not wish to trash your religions, many things that people thought "God" made happened were proven wrong by science and other means. Why believe in something no one has varification on?

I'd give you tons of verification, but since i can't see you in person, there's no real reason to start a flaming war. wink.gif

well, i'll give you a little taste:

Ever heard of golddust falling on people in the middle of prayer? Well, it has been tested, and SCIENTISTS say the gold is more pure than gold found on...earth.

Okay. This topic is ended! It's a shame, but but I would appreciate it if this thread were closed...

When I ran a zen discussion thread on this site before, I was impressed with how mature everyone was that we could discuss these greater questions about us, God and the universe without engaging in a flame war. We either respected each other's opinions or kept ours to ourselves...and the resulting conversations were both enjoyable and intelligent, no matter what one believed.

I am disappointed in the individuals who have defiled this thread. mad.gif You know who you are...
