By now, I'm sure most of you heard the terrible news. On behalf of all Canadians , I would like to extend my sympathies to my American neighbors, especially to any of you that might have lost a loved one in this terrible, terrible tragedy. In my 24 years on this earth, this is the most disturbing thing I have ever witnessed. I hope we can put aside our petty bickering for one day, and pray for the victims of this cowardly act of terrorism.

Actually, I don't think it was Arafat. I think it was a terrorist group - not a government. I forget the guy's name, but I believe he is in Afghanistan. That's who I think it was.

I'm at school right now, trying to contact all my friends from the USA. I was going to make a topic about that, maybe I still will.

My sis lives just outside of Pittsburgh (where one plane crashed) so I had to phone her. But her area is okay.

Right now my dad is at one of the airports where all the planes that were heading for the US have been diverted to land.

Things are pretty crazy over here too, actually.

Yes, it's horrible. Here, at work, we've all been watching since the beginning. Nobody feels like going back to work. This is way too tragic to concentrate on anything.

Once again, my American cousins, I mourn for thee.

World Reacts with Revulsion to U.S. Attacks

Photos

LONDON (Reuters) - World leaders reacted with revulsion Tuesday to what President Bush (news - web sites) called an ``apparent terrorist attack'' by aircraft that crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon (news - web sites) in Washington.

But amid the global horror, Palestinian gunmen at refugee camps in Lebanon fired into the air Tuesday to celebrate the news of the attacks.

``America and Israel are one. This is the result of American policy,'' one Palestinian gunman said. No one had yet claimed responsibility.

Lebanese, Palestinian and Israeli leaders joined Europe, Mexico and other countries in condemning the devastating attacks that caused as yet unknown casualties.

Western European leaders broke off their normal business to return to their capitals for crisis meetings and expressed solidarity with the United States.

From every corner of Europe, leaders condemned attacks they branded horrendous, abominable, disgusting, monstrous and abhorrent.

The European Union (news - web sites) said it was the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor 60 years ago and was ``one of those few days in life that one can actually say will change everything.''

``This is an act of war by madmen,'' EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten told Reuters.

Norway called it the worst terrorist attack in history.

Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) expressed deep sympathy to the American people ``in connection with this terrorist act, this terrible tragedy.''

WESTERN EUROPE

``France has always condemned terrorism, condemns it without reserve and thinks we must fight terrorism by all means,'' President Jacques Chirac said as he broke off a regional tour to rush back to Paris.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) expressed his disgust before racing back to London from a conference.

``This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today. It is perpetrated by fanatics who are utterly indifferent to the sanctity of life,'' he said.

Queen Elizabeth expressed ``total shock.''

``The German people stand by the United States of America at this difficult hour,'' Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder wrote in a letter to Bush in which he pledged ``unlimited solidarity.''

Parliament in Berlin suspended normal business.

Air traffic authorities said all flights leaving Europe to the United States had been suspended.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar called the string of attacks a ``terrorist frenzy.''

Ordinary people also were horrified.

``It's crazy -- and if it's the U.S. today it'll be us tomorrow, you can bet. These people are crazy,'' said a stunned butcher in the French capital Paris.

ARAFAT

``I send my condolences, the condolences of the Palestinian people to American President Bush and his government and to the American people for this terrible act,'' Palestinian President Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) told reporters in Gaza.

``We completely condemn this serious operation...We were completely shocked. It's unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable.''

Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told Israel's Army Radio it was ``simply a tragedy.''

``It's simply a terrible thing,'' he said.

``These tragic actions contradict all human and religious values,'' Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri said.

Mexico's President Vicente Fox (news - web sites) said:

``We reiterate our total, categorical rejection of all forms of violence, of all forms of terrorism.''

RESOLVE

Britain, one of the United States's closest allies, offered all the help at its disposal to bring the perpetrators to justice.

EU leaders said fighting guerrilla attacks would now top the agenda indefinitely.

``It's certainly going to mean that the fight against international terrorism is going to dominate the international agenda until it's won,'' the EU's Patten said.

``The international community must respond together to these disgusting acts,'' said Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

``It is probably the largest attack we have ever seen against an open democracy and therefore an issue for the entire democratic world,'' said Sweden's Prime Minister Goran Persson.

``All democratic forces must form a united front.''

Bush Says He's Taken Steps to Protect Americans

By Arshad Mohammed

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, Louisiana (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said on Tuesday the United States had taken all appropriate steps to protect the American people and would hunt down and punish those responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites).

``We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people,'' Bush, facing the first big test of his eight-month presidency, told reporters at a hastily arranged appearance at Barksdale Air Force Base.

``Make no mistake, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.''

Bush said the U.S. military had been put on ``high alert status'' and said he had taken security precautions to ensure the proper functioning of the U.S. government.

``Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faithless coward,'' Bush said. ``Freedom will be defended.''

Offering his prayers for the victims, the president added: ''I want to reassure the American people that the full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and to help the victims of these attacks.''

``Our military at home and around the world is on high alert status and we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue the functioning of your government,'' Bush said.

``We have been in touch with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans.''

Bush said that he had been in contact with the vice president, the secretary of defense, his national security team and members of his Cabinet.

He spoke after departing Florida upon word that three hijacked planes crashed into major U.S. landmarks, destroying both of New York's mighty twin towers and plunging the Pentagon outside Washington into flames -- an unprecedented assault on key symbols of U.S. military and financial power.

Loss of life was expected to be catastrophic from the destruction of the giant towers of the World Trade Center where some 50,000 people work. The two 110-story towers collapsed one at a time in a huge cloud of smoke and fire two hours after the initial impacts. Desperate people were seen jumping out of the burning towers before they collapsed.

Bush cut short his trip to Florida and flew at high altitude to the Air Force base in Louisiana for a brief stop before taking off again for an undisclosed destination.

The attacks, the worst on the U.S. mainland in modern history, plunged the country into chaos and panic, paralyzing communications, forcing the evacuation of key buildings, closing markets, schools and even theme parks.

American Airlines said two of its jets carrying a total of 156 people were lost. United Airlines said two of its planes had crashed, one in Pennsylvania, with unknown loss of life.

Telecom Networks Stressed, but Operating

By Ben Klayman and Jeremy Pelofsky

CHICAGO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of callers jammed telephone lines across the United States on Tuesday after devastating aircraft attacks in New York, Washington and Pittsburgh, but despite the clogged lines the U.S. national telephone networks continued to operate.

With phone lines jammed, scores of Americans turned to the Internet to email friends and relatives alerting them that they are all-right.

``We're experiencing double call volume of a normal busy day, which is generating network congestion. The network is fine. There's just too many calls,'' said Dave Johnson, a spokesman for AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news) the nation's biggest long-distance carrier.

``There's absolutely no damage to AT&T's local and long-distance networks,'' he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, two commercial jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, causing the collapse of the landmark twin towers in New York City, one plane crashed into the Pentagon (news - web sites) in Washington, D.C., and another plane crashed outside Pittsburgh. There was no immediate death toll, but the loss of life was expected to be catastrophic.

In Manhattan, the streets were clogged with pedestrians making calls on their cell phones, although many said they were unable to get signals, and long lines formed at pay phones.

``The long-distance networks are experiencing heavy calling volume and it's just way too early to tell if there are any problems,'' said Mark Marchand, a spokesman for Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - news), the nation's biggest local phone company and the dominant service provider in the northeast corridor.

Verizon had a switching center, which routes telephone calls, on the 10th floor of one of the World Trade Center towers that collapsed which served about 40,000 lines in the building. It has emergency operations staff monitoring its system, but no reported network failures.

Sprint Corp. (NYSE:FON - news), the No. 3 U.S. long-distance company, also had network equipment in one of the destroyed World Trade Center towers. The company was not clear how many lines or customers were served by that equipment. ``There's been some blocked calls, and calls are being rerouted,'' said Sprint spokesman Mark Bonavia.

SOME NEW YORK TV HOBBLED

Several New York television stations had transmitters atop the World Trade Center buildings, which collapsed after the plane crashes and therefore are not able to reach viewers who lack cable or satellite television service.

``We, along with the other major networks, have lost our transmitter, because there's no building there anymore,'' said Bill Beam, director of engineering, WABC, the local television station serving New York.

``If you don't have cable or satellite, you're not going to see Channel 7 WABC,'' he said. ``We're arranging for a transmitter to be installed.'' About 75 percent of New York City residents subscribe to cable.

Sources familiar with the matter said that CBS has a transmitter atop the Empire State Building and has been able to broadcast from there.

``We're broadcasting to the full network right now,'' said ABC News spokesman Jeff Schneider. ``We seem to be broadcasting without a problem right now.'' CBS and Fox News said that there has been no apparent operational or transmission problems.

WIRELESS, INTERNET USAGE SOARS

There was also heavy call traffic on wireless networks with few calls going through and the nation's second-largest wireless carrier pleaded with Americans to limit their calls so emergency calls can be made.

``In light of today's tragedies, Cingular Wireless has experienced increased traffic levels on its wireless network and asks that customers please limit use of wireless phones to help keep lines clear and open for emergency (911) calls,'' the company said in a statement.

Atlanta-based Cingular, a joint venture of SBC Communications (NYSE:SBC - news) and BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS - news) said its network is running at full capacity.

Sprint's wireless business, Sprint PCS Group (NYSE:PCS - news), saw heavy volume and capacity constraints on its network, but suffered no equipment damage, Sprint spokesman Bonavia said.

Meanwhile, others are turning to the Internet. Corey Menscher, of New York, e-mailed his family and friends in Texas to let them know he was all right.

``Just so you know, I was not downtown when the World Trade Center was attacked. I am in shock, the city is in shock,'' he said in the e-mail made available to Reuters.

EUROPE REPORTS HEAVY VOLUME

Phone companies in Europe reported a huge number of calls to the United States after the attacks.

British Telecommunications Plc (BT.L) said there has been a 10-fold increase in phone traffic across the Atlantic Ocean but no problems. Cable & Wireless Plc (CW.L) said it was cooperating to manage the traffic load.

Belgian national phone operator Belgacom said a flood of telephone calls to the United States from Belgium and a surge in Internet usage had nearly completely congested its networks.

``There's definitely congestion,'' said Belgacom spokesman Piet Van Speybroeck. ``It's not 100 percent. If you keep trying, you just might get through.''

Finnish carrier Sonera (SRA1V.HE)(Nasdaq:SNRA - news) said only about 44 percent of calls to the United States were getting through.

I've been watching this all day at school... I see many of you talk about a lot of this, and express you sympathy. Then there are those who talk about revenge... but I just want to thank the Lord that MY Dad (who WORKS AT THE PENTAGON)... was working at home today. He works at home about twice a month, and I thank God that today was one of those days. I live in Maryland, and my Dad has a job down in D.C. If he had gone into work like he NORMALLY does, he could be dead right now.

Once again, I'm so thankful that God let it be otherwise.

I just got home, been watching it on TV at school along with alotta students and teachers. Funny, we had to have junior class official meeting today. Seemed kind of incongrous, considering something seriously MAJOR just happened. (And all our new disciplinary principal can say is that he urges us not to do that to other classmates. rolleyes.gif )

This has to be the most horrible thing I've ever heard off. I was with Redwing in class today and everything at school pretty much stopped.

When I first heard the news of the crash I thought they were kidding. God, this is all like a bad disaster movie. I pray that God will be with everyone that has been effected by this today.

But America has to stand strong now. We can't fall into panic because that's what those (Cencored) want.

This next week is gonna be tough but I know America can pull through.

God be with everyone.

You want to know what scares me? THIS scares me:

In the City of God there will be a great thunder,

Two brothers torn apart by Chaos.

While the fortress endures,

The great leader will succumb.

The third big war will begin,

When the big city is burning.
